Weather is said to be changing during the weekend, with the chance of rain during the qualifying. Race day should be colder but dry.

As there is a new tarmac laid around the track, we might see a new overall quickest time for this track, that record is atm held by Michael Schumacher in 2003 with 1:07.908. Last years pole time was 1:08.455 by Lewis Hamilton. DTM was already racing there and their times improved by two seconds from last year on the new tarmac.

    And the course:

Just a bit of broadcasting information, because Setanta are covering the annual South London Rain festival (which keeps getting interrupted by outbreaks of tennis) Free practice 1 and 2 won't be live. Shown in their entirely at midnight later that night.

    This too shall pass.

with Esteban Gutierrez (Haas), Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso), Kevin Magnussen (Renault), Felipe Nasr (Sauber), Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari), Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull)

Funnily, I was hoping it was raining at Wimbledon and Setanta would put on FP2. Low and behold, it's dry in SW19 while its shockingly bad wet weather in Austria!! What's the forecast for quali and race?

Quali could be wet, race should be colder but dry. Rain overnight, so slippery track to be expected.
FP best time is 1:07.373 by Rosberg, 1.1 seconds quicker than last years pole time.

Rules can be a load of bull sometimes. Suffers a suspension failure and then gets another kick.

The rules can be harsh sometimes, but they'll play to him later in the season too because Lewis is on the limit for two engine components. Seb has this in the bag I feel, and I wouldn't be surprised to see rosberg claw a podium either.

    Vettel has penalty too though

I guess Hamilton favourite for pole

Problem for Perez, wonder will he make it through to Q2, and will he be repaired in time

And Kvyat. Wonder was it his fault. He didn't need that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 411 ✭✭Delboy2015

I feel sorry for Kyvat but he has had so many mistakes (if it was his fault). On the other hand, it allows Wehrlein into Q2.

Another suspension failure? This could get interesting!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,409 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Those kerbs are seriously hard on the suspension.

    This too shall pass.

Am I right in thinking that is 3 rear suspension failures today?

Yep, you'd wonder why the drivers keep putting the cars out there though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,469 ✭✭✭✭Ghost Train

Pushing too hard but suspension should be up to curbs. Curbs need to go I think, too many issues if driver makes mistake, 4 cars with suspension problems now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,409 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Am I right in saying all failures happened on Ultra soft? Perhaps there is something about the grip on that tyre that wasn't taken into consideration when designing the suspension.

Looks like rain might be about to arrive

Big picture problems for Setanta for a bit. Seems to have settled down now.

    This too shall pass.

Button got lucky - secured P10 before the rain ruined Grosjean's fast lap, so through to Q3.

This could be a good Q3. Last man wins.

    Might be good grid tomorrow

    Time for slicks I think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,469 ✭✭✭✭Ghost Train

5th for Button will work out as P3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,074 ✭✭✭✭bnt

Rosberg P2 before his penalty, which means Hulkenberg on the front row, and Button in the 2nd row. Interesting grid, you said?

Heard Toto Wolff has suggested that the curbing is creating some sort of resonance which is resulting in the broken suspensions. You can see it below...

That's a crazy amount of lateral movement of the tyre wall on both tyres. Great slow-mo all the same.

Well that was a good qualifying season today. Should make for a good race tomorrow. Would like to see Hulkenberg get on the podium. Thought he was going to get P1. Good to see Button get into Q3 and in 5th but them move up too 3rd because of grid penalty,s on other drivers.
As for the new yellow curbs I think its right to have them there. If they were not there drivers would be going out over the track limits and getting away with it. They should be able to race whiten the track you can,t go of over the track limits in a place like Monoco so why should they be allowed to do it here. Also the reason they are so hard on the suspension is because they are made of steel which is harder on the suspension.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Interesting that it's the smaller curbs that seemed to cause the damage in both Rosberg and Kyvats failure. Teams seem to be playing about with tyre pressure rules by super heating the wheel hubs and seems to be a lot of bounce in the tyres. Does make me wonder if tyre pressure is small factor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,708 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

Funny you say that...Pirelli had the minimum pressures set to 19.5psi, but lowered it overnight to 18.5psi. But I'm not sure if this is causing more problems or not.

Do higher pressures cause less lateral resonance whereas reducing pressures ending up with so much more lateral movement/resonance?? I dunno, there's loads of science around it I'm sure we'll find out more.

It's a very wet morning for the GP3 race with the GP2 race to follow shortly. I'm wondering if it will clear later at lunchtime.

Its still drizzling so a wet start could be possible but still expected to dry up.

I'm no technical expert but my theory is the ultra soft tyres are too grippy for that sort of lateral movement and that's what's putting the suspension under strain. When they were announced Pirelli said they were a street circuit special, so what they are doing here is anyone's guess.

Hulkenberg seems to make places at the start, although I dunno if it's down to him or the cluster****s in the midfield. Wouldn't be surprised if he leads into one.

Come on, hope this is good, I'm supposed to be helping out getting stuff ready for a wedding tomorrow and if it's a borefest I'll be in the doghouse for no reason!

Is it just me or have Croft and Brundle missed an outstanding move by Hulkenberg around the outside of Ricciardo?

Hamilton seems to be aiming for a 1-stop, staying out so long on those shredding tyres, losing over a second per lap over Rosberg. Even if it rains, he'll still have one fewer stop than everyone else.
