Flying with Protein Powder

    Hi there

Wondering will I be okay flying with protein powder in my CHECKED baggage.

Won't be trying to bring it on the plane and I am bringing an unopened, sealed bag.

Only past thread I see on the matter is this one http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=73460517 which isn't really the same query anyway

I would think that there shouldn't be an issue - I mean surely they have the technology to scan powders to detect if they are anything other than what they claim to be so bringing a big bag of powder shouldn't be an issue? It's only a 750g bag btw.

Will I hold up the entire flight by bringing this in my checked baggage?

    Thanks in advance

Why in the name of god would you risk a rectal exam and a lengthy delay in an airport in the name of "gains"

Buy some packets of ham when you get there

Your going to the North of Spain and bringing protein powder? Enjoy the local food, you won't suffer from a lack of protein.

Have some Basque cider while you are there.

Food in hostels is basic but decent

Not sure where you got the north of Spain from my post.

I'm not going to the north of Spain.

I'm not looking to "risk" anything in the name of "gains" hence me asking the question prior to my flight. I was wondering if anyone had any solid knowledge on the subject and would be able to advise me if I can bring it. If I can't bring it I will just buy it when I get over there.

I'll just call aer lingus and ask them in the morning.

Try sowing it into the lining of the suitcase, double wrapped in plastic so the dogs won't detect it

Frequent business traveler here. I used to need protein powder for a diet I was on. So long as it is an unopened, commercially labeled package, they won't have any trouble with it unless it contains ingredients that won't pass customs (such as some dairy or animal protein ingredients, check the requirements of the country you are flying to).

Thank you for that - appreciate that.

Seriously! It's whey ffs...what could there possibly be to worry about!

I regularly bring it in my hand luggage. I even put it in a ziplock bag and put the bag into the shaker to keep it all together.

I take 2 unlabeled clear zip lock bags of whey with me in checked luggage. Also creatine in another clear unlabelled zip lock bag. Have done all around the US and Ireland to US and vice versa. Looks like drugs but out of about 100+ flights I've never had as much as a question about it.

Yeah I know it's only whey but I was just worried that I would hold up everybody on the plane. Don't want to do that and if it was going to be hassle I would just leave it and buy it over there rather than delay hundreds of people.

Not worried about getting it taken off me or being accused of being a drugs mule because it IS whey. Just worried about p*ssing everyone off for the sake of €20 :)

Thanks for your answer though - once I know I won't be holding everyone up then I don't mind.

    Cheers

I travel a little bit. Always got my whey with me. Either in a bag or a sealed food container. It really is a non issue.

And those people being all smug; when you're away and your routine is out the window is prob when whey is most useful.

I usually pack some malto as well. It's so sad.

In fairness, they're not the ones who are afraid to leave the house without a protein shake...

Fair enough. If in hand-luggage it doesn't even show up on the scanner, you don't need to take it out of your bag. But as it's in your checked-in luggage you've nothing to think about. I've brought it to many countries...but as another poster has mentioned you may need to check customs/agriculture declarations as it is viewed as an animal product.

Anyone would think I'm being mocked for considering the rest of the passengers

He's not talking about popping to the shops.

Any half serious athlete going to an event, for example, for a few days to a week or more, is going to bring a handy protein solution, probably BA and maybe creatine.

This is my experience anyway. I've never seen anyone scoffing.
