Looks like the whole strike thingy has lead to calls for the system to be installed with automation. Interesting times for our transport network network ahead.

its going to be more difficult with on street running, not due to automation issues, but due to public concern. But not automating or at least looking into doing it for metro north, given it is at least another ten years away, is madness IMO...

Okay doctor cynical ... let some of us dream of a modern transport network with automation at the helm

Question is will the robots unionize and demand equal pay and conditions?

They'll probably strike on national holidays seeing as they have no heart or feelings!

Some dreams actually have a chance of becoming reality. What you're suffering from is known as delusions

I would have thought that the Dart system could be more easily adapted to non-driver operation as it is segregated and the driver would still be on the train to close the doors and check the tickets. He could also sell the coffee and snacks. :)

The MN project would obviously be automated from the start as it would be insane not to do so - nothing new in that as there are lots of automated metros.

Trams - not so sure - you would still need a person on the tram for safety and passenger reassurance so what would be the savings? There are too many possible interactions with passengers, pedestrians and cyclists.

To be fair the technicians responsible for maintaining and calibRating driverless trams would go on strike...
