Now that Ireland are out of the Euros, is anyone going to support England?

They are our neighbours, speak the same language, we follow their football clubs, like the same music, have similar sense of humour, like the same tv. I worked in the UK for a couple of years and got along fine. I think we are grown up enough and mature enough to move on from the past. I won't be singing 'God Save the Queen' but I will support England in the Euros. Anyone else?

No. They are the mortal enemy.

I'll be supporting 48-ish% of them.

    The rest can f*** off.

I thought they had voted themselves out of the Euros?!

    I will

    I am English though.

Iceland are the most isolated country in the competition apart from ourselves and their name is almost the same as ours so for that reason I'll be supporting them.

Also I want to see what vegtable will be on Roy Hodgsons head in the Sun tommorow if England lose.

I'd support Wales over England, but there's still potential for a Wales vs. England final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

I'm not so much "not supporting England" as I am "supporting Iceland". Go on the underdog!

But yeah, after leaving the EU I want them out of the competition ASAP. It'll probably be France v England in the next round really so there'll be some backdrop to that game.

Not after their fans tried to intimidate and provoke Irish fans the other night

French police had to intervene and pepper spray them

You can't manufacture support. I can't support a country that is not my own for no reason other than there is no bond with that country which would make me get nervous for 90mins or instigate the euphoria/misery which I get when I'm watching Ireland. Even Northern Ireland, it's still not the same. I couldn't care less.

You don't need to support a team just because there is a tournament on.

Nah, but it's nothing to do with nationalism.

the sooner they're out of the competition, the sooner their media stops blabbering on about them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,812 ✭✭✭✭sbsquarepants

Not me anyway - call me an entrenched old bigot, but I do get a little buzz out of England falling flat on their faces over and over.
Schadenfreude in the extreme, but sure fúck it, you gotta get your kicks somewhere.

I thought their song was "no surrender to the IRA"?

You can put some tobasco sauce in a mister gun and spray it in the living room for a more authentic experience.

In fairness, our media has done a fair bit of blabbering about us

    My support goes like follows:

    1 - Ireland
    2 - Northern Ireland
    3 - Plucky underdog/Wales

Yes because I have money on them. Hope they win it, it will sicken everyone lol

There seems to be a bit of animosity between rugby followers of Ireland and Wales

ITV commentator yesterday speaking of England's opponents after Iceland so writing them off. I might shtick a few Euro on them. :D After that, Deutschland über alles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭CFlat

I don't have a problem supporting England. I don't blame Wayne Rooney for 800 years of oppression. But, there I am yesterday watching the Beeb coverage on the games(cause in fairness it's better then ours) and Rio Ferdinand starts talking about possibly playing the French in the semis and Lineker correctly points out they have to beat Iceland first and Ferdinand actually said, 'ah, don't worry, we'll beat them'.

I hope Iceland bring them to their knees today!!!

Apart from that as long as it isn't Spain or Germany I don't mind who wins.

They sure have, I just find the narrative around English teams/athletes a bit more grating.

Fair enough that they big them up a bit, but when average performers get presented as being actual contenders it's just insulting to the other teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Not a hope. Definitely Iceland in todays match. I'd support England against New Zealand or Wales in Rugby, but against pretty much everyone else in any sport, it's ABE

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,681 ✭✭✭Fleawuss

No. After Ireland goes I support the team that plays attacking football well. After Brexit England deserves no support of mine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,495 ✭✭✭✭eviltwin

I've nothing against England but they get enough support so I'm back the Welsh overall. I like the underdog so I'm hoping Iceland get the win today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭CFlat

I'm supporting England now! James ward is playing Djokovich in the first round of Wimbledon today.

The perpetually deluded optimism coupled with the self fulfilling prophecy of choking during penalty shoot outs is what is so endearing about England. No major tournament is complete without them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,461 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

No would shout for England to a degree. I think they will make hard work of tonight though and France beat them next week

I'm pretty sure Wales are our Closest neighbours in the Euros...

    Anyway, C'MON ICELAND!!!!

Rather not be associated with the minority of Football hooligans that make up there fan base, and the brexit vote where they imho stabbed us in the back in regards to the North, has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Surely all the premier league supporters will be fawning over their 'local' club's stars playing for England?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,117 ✭✭✭✭Junkyard Tom

We should support France seeing as they're out closest EU neighbours.

Well I was all set to support Iceland for the rest of the tournament before Brady scored against Italy, so after yesterday then it's back to iceland

    Err, why?

Because they evidently love English football so much.

You're still not making any sense to me. So if I support Man U (I don't), I should be fawning over the English national squad because of the presence of Rooney in its line-up? Does that apply to other nationalities too? Very strange.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭Libadour

Jesus no. I never want England or Norn Iron to win any game ever. I'll be supporting Spain probably.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,473 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

I used to cheer them on when Shearer was Captain as I followed Newcastle and several of the players played also for England also.
Nowadays since Newcastle are muck and don't have any English players in the team I just cheer on their opposition although I am hoping wales do well with Bale just to piss off Ronaldo

    No, I'll be supporting Wales.

Anyone able to put up a poll to see which country would be our second preference after Ireland.?
