Reliable pedometer that counts just steps, not all motion?

As I explained here I downloaded a "pedometer" that was really a motionometer (Ok, I just invented that word!).

Would anybody have recommendations for a genuine pedometer? Is it possible for an accurate one to work correctly as a phone app, or would I have to put it on my wrist or leg for accuracy? Thanks.

Pedometers work by tracking motion and making wild guesses as to which motions are steps and which aren't. You'll find some have smarter software than others for detecting actual footsteps but any commercial product is never going to give you anything other than a very rough guess.

I'm sure a system could be engineered with motion sensors on each foot to make sure it only ever counts actual steps but I haven't heard of anything like that on the market. The reason for that being, I imagine, that the rough guess approach is perfectly fine for anyone who wants to count their steps.

What phone do you have? I have the Samsung S Health app and I find the pedometer fairly accurate. Certainly doesn't count steps when I'm in the car or anything like that.

Excellent. I just got the S7 last week and I noticed that app but didn't know it had that facility (I just googled "pedometer"). Will try it now. Thanks.

Just an update. That S Health app mentioned above is superb and very accurate with loads of extra stuff. Not sure how reliable its conversion of your steps into calories is but the pedometer itself is spot on.

It doesn't really matter how accurate the count is tbh. As there's no benefit of knowing the exact number of steps. What matters is a comparative data.

If you average 10,000 steps a day (per the count). Then on saturday, you do 15,000 steps. And on sunday 6,000.
It's a pretty safe assumption that you were more active on saturday, and less on sunday. Regardless of the actual steps each day.
If your average is trending up over time, then thats probably accurate too.
