    Slovakia v England ITV, TV3

    Russia v Wales ITV4, RTE 2

    Table.jpg

England win 7 points, draw 5 points, a loss 4 points

    Slovakia win 6 points, a draw 4 points, a loss 3 points

    Wales win 6 points, a draw 4 points a loss 3 points

Russia need to win to progress.

The third best team's fate will not be known until all the group games are played

Team news for England strongly suggests Kane and Sterling will be dropped for Vardy and Sturridge, also talk of Rooney on the bench for Jordan Henderson and Wilshire for Alli. Both full backs are being swapped as well - Clyne and Bertrand coming in.

Hamsik the danger man for Slovakia while Skrtel is promising to take no prisoners - though whether that effects them or England the most remains to be seen.

Chris Coleman is to keep with the same 11 that started against England, no idea about Russia yet.

I'm not sure I get the logic in all the changes for England. Hodgson is making a rod for his own back here if Slovakia & Wales win and suddenly England are playing Spain or Germany on Saturday. Far better surely to not put it in any doubt that they're going for the win.

If England finish second (would need a Wales win and a draw in the other game) I'll be seeing them in Nice on Monday. I've never seen England play in a tournament match so that would be great in a way, but I'd happily accept watching Wales instead if it means England win tonight and take on a third place side instead in the second round.

My preference for tonight would have been to bring Sturridge, Vardy & Wilshere in for Kane, Sterling & Lallana and push Rooney into the front three. I lumped on Kane as top goalscorer but the other two strikers deserve their chance.

main thing is Russia need to go home. They've been torturous to watch, even Ukraine were more entertaining in the Germany game than Russia have been.

I've been impressed by Slovakia, they might have a chance of a result.

England win is what the Irish team need from this group.

Not sure which of these games to watch as they're compelling in their own way.

Good to see some changes for England.

Hodgson was lucky in the last game in that he was forced to divert from his conservative approach and the players who arguably should have started delivered the result.

Vardy has to start imo. Simply unacceptable him being on the bench now after 1. His form this season 2. His form since he joined the England squad and 3. The current form of Kane and Sterling.

The last two games aside, Harry Kane has had just as big a claim to that shirt as Vardy has. He's a far better footballer, IMO, and has scored more goals both over the season and the last six months specifically.

Interesting to see how the Russians inside the stadium react if they lose

No Dele Alli surprises me. (And annoys me as he's in my FF team).

That English team is brilliant. I almost prefer it to their last two games, due to Wilshere being there.

A lot of changes there...looks like a diamond midfield with Dier at the base, Henderson and Wilshire in the middle, and Lallana at the tip. Maybe swapping Wilshire and Lallana, but Lallana has been about the best attacking midfielder for England so far, so wouldn't be surprised to see him roaming around behind the 2 strikers, drifting into open spaces.

I actually quite like the look of this team to be honest...one of Vardy and Sturridge will naturally drift wide to pick up the ball and open up more space centrally...a lot of the game will depend on how effectively the full backs can get forward though.

How so? We're going to need a win against Italy to get through regardless and 4 points will see us through no matter what.

Strange team selection from Hodgson for a game that he needs at least a draw.

    Evening all!

    Wales 2 Russia 0

    England 1 Slovakia 0

Somebody has been out on the mountain with his sheep way too long today. :p

Only one goal in it I'd say. Good start by Bale though, love watching him play. He's such a positive player, bursting forward at pace.

This thread is going to get messy with two games side by side. Why has Roy made so many changes tonight? Gonna be a tough game tonight. Slovakia are a solid side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,026 ✭✭✭✭adox

4 points won't automatically see us though depending how other games go and groups finish. We need to groups to finish with third place teams on 3 points or less. One group already has that and an England win would guarantee that in a second group.

Weren't they anticipating some trouble between the Wales fans and the Russians, did anything happen ?

Still a bloody good team he's put out to be fair though. Maybe Henderson aside, it's hard to argue about any of these guys being first teamers. The full backs maybe, but imo it's a toss up between their quality there. Add in the "hungry" factor, and the fresh legs, and I don't think it's a bad idea.

England look good, Skrtel to either be sent off or score an own goal.

The squad is very consistent in terms of quality alright. Hope the 'hungry' factor and fresh legs brings the win. Vardy looks lively already. Just a tad surprised by the number of changes for such an important game.

I think the Russian keeper was well within his rights to kick the ball away. Yes the ball had gone out but you play to the whistle and the refereee hadn't blown his whistle at that point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74,322 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

Has Skrtel been sent off yet?

Imagine Wales win and Slovakia steal a late goal to win. England finish third, then end up playing Spain in the next round :pac:
