With the current state of the threads on the front page of AH, all talk of bowel problems and committing murder if you could get away with it, I think we need a cheerful thread!

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads today. Hopefully you all have a nice day.

My one gripe with Father's Day, a lot people I know post it on Facebook instead of actually saying it, ya know face to face to their father's..

Nobody said happy fathers day to me.

Probably because I do not have kids.

One less day I have to worry about giving somebody a present.

I texted my dad this morning to wish him a happy Father's Day.

His response: "Thank you, same to you!"

It was better craic back in the day; before it was hijacked by all the single mothers double-jobbing.

I used to give my dad a card on Mother's Day too :)
But yeah it's not a day to be bitter or use it against a child's father

Don't forget all the double jobbing single father's on mothers day when that comes about.

Or even the grandparents who do both roles.

I came from a family doing the latter.

The other day I had someone cancel an appointment with me cause they were attending a funeral. I was really careful to be sympathetic and say the right things and then at the end of the conversation they said "thanks, have a good day", and I said "yeah, you too!" :o

I dunno, maybe I'm just a grumpy oul fart, but there should be no need for these Mother's Days or Father's Days or Monkeys Uncle's Days. Treat people the same way every day of the year and you'll not go far wrong.

    I got a card,150e and 4 txts wishing me a happy fathers day, :-)

Woo hoo! A nice niceness thread for a change.

I am now in a place that my departed dad loved and will be with my own son in a few hours.

I don't have kids so the day means nothing to me, but it's an excuse to buy my dad and mam presents without them giving me grief for wasting money.

Usually if I buy my dad some cool spice and sauce kits that he'd like, he'll shout at me for wasting money even if it was only twenty quid.

today he accepted two rugby jerseys with no complaint. That's why I like them :)

It's lovely to acknowledge your dad on Father's Day, I just avoid social media on days like today as people are plastering pics on their accounts with little essays about how good they were/are that the majority of their dads will never see!!

I feel it's done to get likes as opposed to saying it to his face, writing a meaningful card, or even picking up the phone and acknowledging how much you appreciate all that he has done for you over the years.

Wouldn't it be great to have a welcome home party for all the Dad's who are part of the Green Army abroad for being the best Dads-as-fans in the world ever?

I don't have any kids, that I know of. at least.

If a teenager knocks on the door today with a back pack I'll have a heart attack.

Why is there no Bachelor's day, eh??

    I love beans me.

Everyday is Bachelors day. You get to do whatever you like, stay out all night, stay up all day, up sticks to a different continent. The daddies need a special day for having their lives taken from them :p

I told my wife, No Chocolate on Fathers day. Since June 1st I have been cutting back on the unhealthy stuff (except Red Wine) and trying to be good.
This morning, I now have a box of Green & Blacks, a box of Lindor and the totally yummy pack of chocolate Kimberly.

Ive enjoyed it the last couple of years with my son as well and hes at that age now *nearly 3* where he knows whats going on.
I got a spider man card daddy pig thing for me keys and a cushion that i can put the remotes into for the sofa :D .

This time next year there be two of them to get me something !! :P

I had a box of three bottles of fancy whiskey sent to my dad, and a hamper of spicy delicacies sent to my Granddad, since I can't be with either of them today, and called them both. After going to the trouble, I got the same ear bashing from both of them for buying anything, but secretly I know they're both delighted I remembered and will be bragging about it to anyone unfortunate enough to be around today. :)

I'm very close to my kids and would speak & text a few times a week. I still like to get that 'extra' call today. It was a quick Happy Father's day and then a long mutual moan about yesterday's footy. Then I rang my Dad and did the same. Precious moments

Heading into hospital later to see my dad for Father's Day!

He had surgery last week to remove part of his oesophagus and stomach due to cancer so it's a happy visit as they are satisfied they got all the cancer and he can now focus on recovering after over a year battling this horrible disease.

Think this is the first Father's Day where I'm actually very appreciative that my dad is still around ...

I got a variety box of very strong Belgian beers. Now I appreciate the gift but after what happened yesterday I just can't have them in my house. So i'll just have to drink it all as quick as possible.

Really missing my dad today. I could really use his wisdom at the moment. I heard Dance With My Father on the radio earlier and just lost it. On the up side I've got a great husband who works really hard for his kids so he's getting spoilt.

It's natural to be upset. Don't try to ignore it, it's okay to feel it.

At the same time though, focus on making good memories with your kids and husband. Was there anything you loved doing with your dad that you could do with them? To be able to pass on those memories and relive them with your own kids might be a nice way of remembering him today

Got my Dad flowers cos as part of his present cos he'll like have some new flowers to bring to Mam's grave.

More than the socks, chocs and books combo he usually gets anyway.

Thanked him for all the great memories he's given me - teaching me how to play football, hurling, pitch and putt, how to use a lathe...and all the times he was just a great Dad.

Hopefully I can follow in those footsteps with Littl'un

Had a fine father's day last year. Bought Dad a new shirt and a watch. Cooked him a freshly caught salmon and then sat down together to watch the GAA. I never did that before as by my own admission I would not be big into occasions but last year was really special.

Almost a month later he was 6ft under out of nowhere. Really feeling it today but ehh life goes on.

Fathers, remember that you don't have to be the perfect example to your children. You can also function as a sort of hideous warning.

It is a sad day for all of you without your dads. I hope you are being kind to yourselves today as well as remembering daddies xx

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,646 ✭✭✭✭qo2cj1dsne8y4k

I'm sure all our dads not with us would give us a kick in the ass for moping about the place with faces as long as wet weekends. I know daddy L would be appauled at how sad I've been since he died. He would tell me to eat all the chocolate and buy myself a present with the money I'd have spent on him, so that's exactly what I'm trying to do today. Im going to try this whole no more being sad on what should be nice days.

Missing my Dad so much today. He did so much for me - way above and beyond what a father should do for their (adult) child. I feel quite lost without him.

    Happy Fathers Day Dad!
