Would a tattoo affect my job opportunities?

I'm currently in college, studying a respected business and language course. I've always loved the idea of tattoos and I've been planning to get my first one sooner rather than later. It wouldn't something big, just something small on my leg that could be easily covered.
One thing that's putting me off is whether or not a tattoo would hinder my employment opportunities. I know the common answer is "every employer is different", but presuming I'd be seeking a job in an economic, marketing or finance company, do you think I'd be at risk of being turned down?
Do employers ask up front whether you have a tattoo? What happens if it's noticed in the medical exam?
    Any advice or information appreciated!
    Cheers

Are you going to be wearing trousers in work?

Not unless you're just wearing your Y-fronts in the interview I think you should be fine.

A covered up tattoo would not affect your job opportunities unless it is a job that involves removing your clothes!
And no, never heard of an interviewer asking about tattoos.

If you're worried wait till your actually working full /part time and then stick to legs ,torso ,upper arms ,back ,
Don't get hands ,neck inked .

    That's the dream

More importantly, will you be required to remove your trousers during the job interview?

You just never know with some of those marketing and finance types.

Au contraire, I'd say wearing just your y fronts is an excellent way to ensure no one notices your tattoo at all.

I thought the dream was getting a tat. Come on OP, you can't have it all.

Yes. You'd be way more likely to find work as a roadie for a metal band.

    If it's discreet you're fine.
Anything on the face, neck, or forearm I'd avoid.

I love tattoos. I'll hire you to be my personal assistant. You can walk around in your boxers all day.

    I work in a bank

I have tattoos from shoulder to elbow (both arms) and a new one on inner forearm.

No one has ever said anything about them and certainly the question "have you been inked" ever arisen in any interview I have ever had :)

Once it's not on hands/face/neck you will be grand.

Thanks for the replies, I take all your points but what about the attitude that tattoos are unprofessional and people who want their careers to excel refrain from getting them? Maybe it's just been drilled into me by my parents and it's an old fashioned attitude. Are tattoos now just universally accepted in the workplace, provided that they can be covered up?

    Tattoos are accepted full stop.

I've never heard of an employer asking if you have tattoos - the only scenario I could imagine would be if you wanted to work in an environment where you could easily pass on a hepatitis infection to the general public, so a recent tattoo which you may have got in unsanitary conditions might be an issue.

No one knows you have a tattoo no more than they know if you shave your bits.

Does not matter what their attitude is to it as they cant see.

Course if you decide to get drunk with your boss and show them your tattoos, or shaved bits,...then that as your choice!

If you keep them covered up, how would your employer ever even know you have them?
I don't think they're universally accepted, smaller business owners might still have problems with them. But generally, I don't think they're a big problem.

Go for a job interview in a bank with a face tattoo and get back to us

I don't think it's a problem so long as they don't say or depict anything offensive and aren't on your face.

Nothing on your hands face or neck and you should be golden. Companies may not have policies banning tattoos but if you never know what the person interviewing you might personally think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭randy hickey

I've given this many hours of thought Op, and have come to the conclusion that you can indeed get a tattoo, as long as it appeals to the marketing and finance types.

To appeal to the marketing people, you need a tattoo of a strong, well-designed iconic brand logo.

To appeal to the financiers, you need a tattoo that communicates billions of euro and decadent opulence to them

Can I recommend a tattoo of the logo of Anglo Irish Bank?

As others have said if it can be covered it aint going to be a problem ;) If it's on your leg or shoulder no one will ever know.

As for the myth of employers and visably showing tattoos? It sadly does happen. No one can say how much or how little cause it comes down to the person doing the interview and their attitude towards tattoos.

I know of a recruitment company who will not hire consultants if they have a visible tattoo.
You will find more of an issue with them with companies who require you to go to client meetings etc.
(BTW I'm not anti-tattoo, I have one on my mid-back).

If you go into a job interview in a proper industry with a visible tattoo then you may as well show up in a Fila tracksuit.

One that wouldn't hire someone with a visible tattoo for anything other than cleaning the toilets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,719 ✭✭✭✭_Brian

Needs to be in an area easily covered with normal office wear without the need for long sleeves or a polo neck up to your chin.

Some workplaces are very strict about tatoos and don't want them on show at all.

Face, neck, lower arms and hands are all areas that may attract attention.

I find facial tatoos very off putting on a person.

OP, you're fine... and such a rebel! :pac:

Tats seem all the rage at the moment. Don't appeal to me at all.

As long as the tattoo isn't... I don't know... a swastika or a gun on the back of your neck, or 'love' and 'hate' on your knuckles, I doubt many modern employers would be all that bothered. Some might, but do you really want to work for someone like that?

I have no issue with tattoos.

But I have clients who I know would have an issue with tattoos.

So I would be less inclined to hire someone with tattoos.

How's about you actually list a "proper industry" and back up your first comment instead of the above bull****.

Certain IT companies that send consultants to client sites will not hire you for certain roles if you have a visible tattoo.

Don't get one that can't be covered up with normal business attire... problem solved

Also you could consider not getting one solely because they are naff
