    Hi all
I have to replace a few tags out of a few cows and I was wondering can I just get a single visual replacement or do I have to get an electronic one
It's hard to see which is gone electronic or the visual
I ordered the visual but now I'm not sure
    Thanks

Another question on tags, I have around 10 new tags left will need around 50 in the autumn, do I have to use the 10 up before i order more?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 734 ✭✭✭longgonesilver

You can do it that way if you like. Use up all your tags and then order more. It will take the most of three weeks for the new tags to arrive and your calves will be overage before they arrive.

    You can order away now.

need to order more calf tags, normally just put in one order for the year covering autumn and spring calvers,
with the talk of new tag numbers etc are people waiting till they are out or will they be dearer?

According to the article farmers can use the old type tags for the 2017 breeding season up until December 2017.

Checked the cows today. 6 are missing tags. I notice it in neighbours cattle too. A lot missing tags. Quality is dire.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,473 ✭✭✭Wildsurfer

Ah tell me about it. 28 cows missing one tag here. Now about 5 are old cows and that's fair enough but the rest are from two batches of tags ie two consecutive years and all tissue tags. Obviously I'm expecting Mullinahone to give me them foc. So anyone use new suppliers this year what do ye think of quality? Time for a change methinks

I've a lot missing as well. they just wear away and fall out as there are no torn ears

They can lose them from just scratching their ears against barriers or gates but I saw first hand where a cow starts licking another cow's ear. Then she gets the tag fully in her mouth and bites down. The plastic is so weak their teeth just cut through before the other cow reacts. I must have tagged 10 animals during housing and none had any damage to the hole.

recent tags are not as good, from what I see.. get lose to easily..connection must not be as good on them
re new tags--use up all ur old ones.. you can do that

Used cormac tags this spring. Found them handy in that the 4 tags were joined so none fell in the straw. Also sample didn't have to be put in a bottle so bit of time saved. Also sample bottle is way smaller. Put 40 into 1 envelope and it was still smaller than the mullinahone envelope with 10. Saved me a good few €1.65s!

Obviously a bit early yet to tell about their durability, but just ordered replacement tags for the cows and since this time last year, out of 90 cows, I needed 17 single tags and 1 pair. Some joke.

Did you order the replacement tags from Cormac? How much? How long does delivery take?

Losing a lot of tags here and received a penalty last year on an inspection which I blame on the low quality of the tags!

None of the ears damaged on mine either. All holes perfect in the ears. I put the new tag back into the same hole. I found a lot of the lost tags in the round feeder during the winter. When I do them for lice they scratch like mad. That's when they loose a lot of them, I think.
At the end of the day, the quality is just not up to it. The department know the replacement rate too, as it goes through their database. Still they do nothing about it.

If possible dont tag them in the same hole. They will fall out again

No someone on here said not to retag in the same hole as previous tag was in as there's a greater chance they will loose it again

Did you check was it April 1st when you got that advice. Sur it couldn't possibly make any difference. Think about it logically. Or am I totally missing something!

No whoever said it said the ear would be weakened. As in hole would be bigger. It makes sense if you think about it. That said I normally tag them in the old hole as it's handier

I would imagine while the hole might be bigger that the rim would be thicker so it might depend on the overall width of the hole.

No, I ordered them from mullinahone, as my account was in credit and I wanted to use it up. (I think I must have got a bit of a rebate last year).

Contact tags are €2.19 for single and €2.90 for pair. Plus postage of 2.95

Seemly 400000 tags were faulty and the bvd part fell out( the white part) and mullinahone were to replace free of charge.

Toughness, is the key quality needed in the polypropylene for this application.
They just may not be using the correct type of PP as there are lots.
As is often the case, some middle manager possibly thought he'd be clever and save money by buying a cheaper PP.
The other key issue is that, they are yellow. Yellow is one of the colours that is most susceptible to sun UV degredation. So it needs a good lot of UV protection included in the mix.

I wonder if they made them with a bigger 'washer' at either side of the ear would they last longer....

If the hole is largely staying intact, then the weakness has to be in the crossbar stem. Just make the bloody thing thicker.
A few hours work on the moulds, if they don't want to buy new ones.

Plagued with tags here the last year, several missing after only being retagged in the spring, all holes intact none tore out, i've also had to retest a good few BVD samples as apparently they were empty, going to move my business to the competition for next year, they could'nt be much worse.

The free replacements are only from the faulty batch and you have to ask about them.

This is from an old cow so maybe 10 years old but from what I see they all seem to go on this pin, at either end.

I think the faulty batch was about 4 or 5 years ago. I got some replaced FOC, mullinahole take the full payment, then 'check with the dept' and your account gets credited if any of the tags you ordered were from the faulty batch.

I ordered some for last years calves and the price and some older cattle and the price of a couple of tags were knocked off the bill ordering online. The number knocked off corresponded with the calves.
