    Kill your neighbour.

    But seriously, call the guards.

Probably not PC to say kill the bastard slowly.

Jaysus lads. I had the same feelings. Dog is dead. I live next to this w@nksock.

To be honest I just want to move on. I am wondering if a firm word would be best. As in "I know what you did u rickshaw, best not come near my property again or u will know about it".

I don't want to the the cops involved.

I had a nice jack russell dog. A chatty little fecker he was.

A neighbour told twice that when I was away he used to bark a lot and howl. Unfortunately due to my work, I am away about 2-3 times a month for a few nights.

When I was about, he never barked (possibly because he slept in my bed with me). In recent weeks I used to lock him downstairs in the kitchen by himself to get him used to me being away. Besides the odd howl he was quiet. I did this to keep the neighbour happy and train him for when I was away.

I was away 2 weeks ago and when I came home he was dead. I took him to the vet, they did a post mortem and reckoned he was poisoned.

When I had a good look at the house I noticed that there was some traces of meat near the letterbox. Someone must have forced some meat through the letter box and poisoned him.

Anyway, I got the shovel out and buried little Toto.

I'm wondering what to do now. I don't want to go to the Gardai or get solicitors involved. Ultimately it won't bring my dog back. I can't be 100% sure, but I reckon my neighbour did this. I am wondering what the best course of action is? A firm word with my neighbour?

You want to know what the best thing to do is yet you don't really want to do anything? The only thing you can do is have a word with the neighbour and I bet if they were that mad with the dog they will proudly admit what they did but if they are smart they might just say nothing. You cant do much at all in pure reality. In a world were this would go to court you have already admitted that you leave your dog alone for long lengths of time so thats a mark against you.

In a way I can understand, during college my neighbours dog would not stop barking during exams and it really would drive you to do things you normally wouldn't. And the laws surrounding barking dogs are just so much effort and too be fair not affective enough.

However the neighbour told you about the dog so that was there first duty in the eyes of the law, the next would be to issue you with a date in court but they must have just sided with the easy way out.

You should have nailed the dogs carcass to his door with a smoke hanging out of its mouth and a sign hanging around its neck saying 'fcuk you.'

    Sorry about your dog.

Genuinely though, you shouldn't have been leaving him alone like that and what you describe as chatty others consider torture. The woman who used to live across the road from me had a jack Russell who yapped constantly when she wasn't there. I know this because even though the dog was kept indoors, I could hear her from 50m away inside my house..

That in no way excuses what your neighbour did and I would go to the Gardai about it. But if you get another dog please don't leave it alone for days... And teach it not to bark unless it's actually defending its territory...

But again, I'm so sorry about your dog, you must be devastated.

The old adage of Keep your friends close and your enemies closer applies here.

This said, invite your neighbors around for tea. Lace your neighbors tea with laxative and watch them squirm while you are telling them all about your memories of Toto!

Who was looking after the dog when you were away?

A little note in his letterbox, scribbled in multi coloured glitter pen...."We know what you did"

If you were away for only a couple of nights a month, would you not have brought the dog to kennels for those nights or got a dog sitter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 990 ✭✭✭Deregos.

Thing is, you can't just let him away with that, it'll eat you up inside.
Bide your time, eventually your opportunity for recompense will arise.

Used to get my GF to call around feed and water him, leave him out for a piddle and take him for a walk.

Ultimately he used to sleep in the house alone.

I am not without dirty hands here, I am also at fault for not being there 24/7, just with my new job (previously a dole head) I had no choice.

Yes I did care for the scoundrel.

If it eases anyone's concern, the little fecker had a litter with a dog across the road. So his seed has been passed on.

About 4 nights a month tops. And as I said earlier my GF would call over and take good care of him, but just not sleep in my place for the night.

    Like everyday
My neighbours used to go away when I was a kid and I called twice a day fed them and exercised them so I can see how that's doable

Aye there's two types of cnuts in the world in my opinion.

People that don't look after dogs, and people that kill dogs that aren't an immediate danger to other humans or animals.

The ISPCA are always good for advice. They really go above and beyond for animals in my experience with them. Even just call your local branch, they have the experiences.

If you think your dog poisoned, phone the guards. If you're trolling, jog on.

    That's the only two solutions

Thanks mate, at least some people understand.

For the 4 days a month I was away (and that was not in a row) my GF used call around and take care of him.

Clearly not if it got poisoned
The dog was outside on the op's property

Yeah fair enuf. But will the Gardai really do much? Maybe if they had a word with the neighbour it would be better than nothing. I just don't want a curt case, can't really afford it.

No he was inside. Someone seems to have slipped poison in a ball of meat thru the letterbox.

Send them a card with cute photos of your dog in it... Add a sob story... Do your best to make them feel awful. And add at the end that I someone poisoned the dog who was like a child to you. And you're quite certain that you know who it was. And that karma tends to be a bitch

If you get another dog - be sound and put it in a kennel when you're going away or off to your girlfriends house. It's flippin' headwrecking hearing a dog bark and howl all day and night. It's a ****ty thing to do to your neighbours. Be a responsible dog owner in future.

Doesn't make what your neighbour did any less ****ty though.

Someone who poisons an innocent animal needs more than a "word" with the Guards. These scumbags make me sick.

The what if a child was hurt rule must apply here

Normally, children aren't left at home for extended periods of time and wouldn't eat meat that came through the letterbox. Irrelevant to this situation.

    I know.

neighbour has a LOOONG history, let's just say he is not someone even the guards would mess with.

As per my previous post I was on the dole previously, so I don't live in the best estate.

Whoever said 'keep your friends close and your enemies closer' obviously didn't have many enemies.. (Ya I robbed that from Game of Thrones).

I don't think you'd have to pay much money since it's your neighbour vs. the state as killing people's pets is against the law. It's your neighbour who'll need to get a solicitor.

My children aren't left at home alone while I work and certainly wouldn't eat meat off the floor. They have standards.

EDIT: You're right, what if it was a child. All the more reason to go to the Guards.

Make up a delicious shepherds pie and drop it in to your neighbour. Then while they're eating it dig up the dog and move him somewhere else out of sight and make sure your neighbour sees the dog has been dug up next time you talk to him across the garden fence...... ;)
