Case against DOB dropped by using a loophole from the ancient law of champerty from 1634. Because the plaintiff hasn't the €10m it would take to pay the legal fees.

If only they apply that law to the ambulance chasers and compo culture that's driving insurance insane.

    Erm...yes they do.

Hence in Ireland, a Solicitor can't offer to take on a case, say in the basis that he'll fund it and get a percentage of an award. I understand such arrangements are popular in the US where firms will fund actions, and it encourages ambulance chasing and compo culture as of course a firm could have effectively retained doctors, detectives etc.

The idea that a billionaire should be able to anonymously bankroll lawsuits against media outlets (however shítty they are) that he has a grievance with, is quite a dangerous one.

His presence as a benefactor should not have been secret in the first place - we can't have billionaires randomly exerting power anonymously like that, against news media organizations, even for good causes, as it would enable them to do the same for ill reasons as well - it has to be out in the open.

Noble sentiments indeed but the real world doesn't work like that. Never has and never will.

There's nothing inevitable about it - all it requires is proper reform of the legal system.

It's our choice whether the legal system should be a two-tier one, with the wealthy having privileged access, or not. Hell, it's our choice how much individual/private power we want to allow people to gain in the first place.

Hogan is supposedly flat broke. Numerous bad investments, a messy divorce, and that incident involving his son.

He'll take whatever gawker can pay him.

He'll take whatever gawker can pay him.

Which right now looks like everything they have.

It's the only superpower for Batman and Iron Man.

Having said that , Bill Gates has been a bit of a disappointment.

Gawker Media files for bankruptcy after losing Hulk Hogan case

I came across this as a video gamer earlier. I didn't realise but Gawker Media own Kotaku. They're also another contentious site but they're not completely bad. I wonder what will happen to them now?

Great news. A scurrilous bottom of the barrel website masquerading itself as being in the public interest.

You can argue all day long about the merits of a billionaire funding the legal case but if that's what it takes to bring down a scummy publication like Gawker I'm all for it.

A website has offered $25,000 for Denton to have sex with a men dressed as Hulk Hogan. (It's Breibart, still made me laugh). http://www.breitbart.com/tech/2016/06/20/xhamster-offers-gawker-founder-denton-35-thousand-for-hogan-porn/

Neither can as the law in Ireland means no one can fund a case for a bit of the payout, http://www.irishtimes.com/business/retail-and-services/judge-says-english-firm-cannot-fund-denis-o-brien-case-1.2617753
