Getting in shape for the big day!!

Thought it might be nice to have a thread for all the Brides and Grooms (and wedding party members) who are trying to stay motivated and get in shape for the big day!!

Step 1 for me is Yoga, not a massive calorie burner but I'm really enjoying it and it will be great to have alongside more intense workout days when I kick it up a notch.

Diet is step two, I've just got braces so I have to change all my eating habits anyway!!

    How's everyone else doing?

You would be better off swapping step two for step one.
    If your serious about it.

I was hoping for a motivation thread rather than a criticism thread.

Also, I'm on step two already so your "advice" is not helpful.

I've been going to the gym and doing classes for the last 4 months and getting personal training sessions too. Im losing inches all over, along with weight. I attend slimming world too which helps with my diet and i find the 2 combined are very good.

But def diet is the main factor. You can never outrun a bad diet and it's so true!!

I completely agree about the bad diet part - I've had lots of dental work lately which has messed up my routine :(

What kind of gym classes do you find the best? I love spinning but I'm sure the weight/ kettle bells are better for results

Great idea for a thread. We can all motivate wach other! :)

I'm training for the ring of Kerry so that's my first focus and after that it's wedding in November. For the wedding my main focus is my arms and the bingo wings.

I do spin, yoga and cycling all at least once a week. When the ring of Kerry is done and dusted I'll have time to look at going to an additional class per week or do workouts at home.

Also have my diet back on track. Want to lose a bit of weight but mainly want to be fit and comfortable in my own skin.

At the moment i do weights on a Wednesday and a 20/20/20 class on a Monday, so it's a mix of 20 mins cardio, weight/strength and then trx.

I have found these great and the inches are coming off all round. Great for toning. Ive lost about 3-4 inches off my hips since Feb and around 3 off my waist. My legs are down around 3 i think too. My arms are slower to lose inches but they were down half an inch last month which i was happy with.

Im 6lbs off my target with Slimming world so would love to be a target member for my wedding day.

I'm going to a wedding in July with my boyfriend and his ex-girlfriend will be there. She's lovely but of course, I still wanna look good!! Can I join in discussion?? :D:D

I've put on about a stone over the last 2 years, wanna lose it plus one more stone. I'm half a stone down so far.

I'm trying to cut out sugar and carbs, rice/bread/pasta wreaks havoc on my stomach and digestion, so it's not too hard to turn it down. Using My Fitness Pal and trying to stay around 1400 calories a day.

I get a lot of exercise in - Crossfit 4 or 5 times a week, dance classes twice a week, cycle to work every day, cycling to town a couple of times a week - but it really, really is down to your diet when it comes to weight loss.

    Good luck to everyone!!

    I'm in :D

In currently in or around 9st 10 and want to get down to 9 stone for the wedding!

My motivation has been sooo crap lately! Eating toast for brekkie and all the things I know I shouldn't :( Being at home with the baby doesn't help as I feel I'm constantly picking!

I'm also getting braces Champagne but I have to get steroid injections into my jaw first in June and see if they work, before they will allow me to go ahead. I've told them about the wedding next year so they best flippin hurry up, no pressure :D

Omg you're doing great with exercise *hangs head in shame* lol

You're like I was before my wedding, nearly the same weight loss wishes too!

I did couch to 5k. It was brilliant, but you cannot out exercise a bad diet. If you want to maintain the weight you want to get to you need to eat properly and cut out the crap. I have fallen off the wagon since but anytime I need to restart myself I go back to couch to 5K and cut out as much crap as I can manage.

I did this before also and found it great!

My issue is now I have problems with my knees and back so running causes me a lot of pain :(

I'm thinking of getting back into Pilates ASAP as it will strength my back and hopefully swim 2/3 times a week.

I did a 5k charity run in 29 mins which I was really proud of for a novice :-)

Swimming is great! I do aquarobics when I get the chance too, you can make the workout as hard as you want but because its water based you're not pounding away with your legs like running.

Groom to be here, great idea for a thread, getting married next year and would like to be about 2 stone to 2 and a half stone lighter.

Need to get my head in the game diet wise, cutting out the weekend shíte, during the week tends to be good. A gym has opened up near me so I've no excuse now.

I'm currently going to the gym 3 times a week. Although I'm just back from a few days away so the diet was way off plan. Back to the gym tonight to get back on track.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 501 ✭✭✭ChampagnePop

There was cake on work today but I didn't want to eat it and get my braces dirty so I just didnt have any - success!!

I'm doing a Zumba tonight, trying to excersize I enjoy this time round and see if helps stick.

I'd love to do C25K but my shin splints are always too bad, I might try again but it would be my 5th attempt

Cycling is good too. And HIIT / interval training. And skipping rope! I have dodgy knees, so I can't do much running, but there's loads of other options. I also love Crossfit and Bikram yoga.

Is crossfit very good yeah? I have been thinking about it but scared to go, thinking everyone will be well used to weight lifting and I'll feel like an eejit lol

It's quite expensive am I right?

I have Temporomandobular joint disorder the past 15 years! It's a killer it hurts like hell. I hope the steroid injection works because if not I will have to get surgery where they will wash out the joint. :o

The worst thing is I already had braces as a teenager!! But my jaw moved again and a couple teeth along with it :( When you get your braces off if your teeth are suitable ask them to put a fixed retainer at the top and bottom (it's behind your teeth so you can't see it). I could only get one on bottom because of the size of my top teeth and that contributed to them moving, it's hard to always wear the removable retainer!

Another bride to be joining the party here, id love to be down 3 dress sizes by the wedding, me and one of my bridesmaids are going to join the gym after our trip to galway, we already try to get out for a walk at least twice a week. Portion size is my big thing, I was listening to a hypnosis app at one stage and I lost over a stone so I must go back to that once i get new headphones

To be honest, why get in shape for the "big" day? People should get in shape anyway.

What happens after the wedding day, back on the biscuits hard is it?!

I really like it because I like to push myself hard and you do a huge variety of exercises, weights, cardio, gymnastics, etc. We do team workouts on Saturdays, where you train with a partner/group and it's great, there's social aspect to it that pushes you to do more. I can full body pull ups now! :) You do a 2 week Beginners course to learn the moves (mostly focused on weight lifting) and then you join the regular classes. But yes, it's expensive. The one I go to is e130 per month, if you go often (4 or 5 days a week), it's equal to about 7 or 8 quid a workout - what I'd pay for a nice glass of wine and think nothing of it :D might as well spend it on something healthy!

The thing I like most about it is that it makes you want to get fit and strong and healthy. Yes, I've lost some weight since I started, but a much bigger victory is being able to do pull ups!

    What?

I don't see where anyone mentioned this as a quick fix, given most here have a year to their wedding. Having an event like a wedding gives people the motivation to push themselves even harder to get healthy.

No need to turn a positive into a negative.

And I'm a size 10, I'm already in good shape except I have a few pounds and toning up to do after having a baby!!!

Mod Note: Right, this thread is exclusively for the supportive discussion of weight loss and fitness related to upcoming weddings. There will be very low tolerance for any sort of messing. Puibo, your post is exactly what I'm talking about. Either post in a useful and supportive manner, or don't post at all.

Whaooo calm down. People have taken me up totally wrong. I'm sure most of you are in great shape.

All I'm saying is that there is life before and after a wedding day too.

I hope everybody reaches and exceeds their fitness goals and it carries on well after the big day.

Apologies to anybody offended by my previous post.

Anyone tried the body coach SSS?

How much did you lose by the end of the 90 day programme? Those numbers seem to good to be true

I need to lose weight, have for years if I'm honest but hoping the wedding will give me the motivation to really go for it. I love my engagement photos but some of them were a bit of a wakeup call tbh.

I used to go to the gym a couple of times a week but for the last 2 years we're had relatives in hospital and we don't get to eat until after visiting and it's 8.30pm and all you want to do after such a long day is eat a sandwich or a pizza. Not great.

Got his book alright and his results seem to be uniformly impressive. Have to admit, I've considered it. The only thing that put me off is that the food he suggests seems to be a bit greasier than I would normally go for.

Groom here, Have been slowly moving average weight down for the last few years, but usually I'll hit a milestone, celebrate, and then struggle to get back down again :p

I'm pretty poor with the exercise, all I really do consistantly is walk to and from work (which is about 10km all in) but I do try to keep the diet as clean as possible which i find easier. Wedding day is in August and if I could lose 2 stone it'd be amazing. Am sure I can do it, I used to be 4 stone lighter when I met the bride first :D

Would batch cooking help when you do have time? Spend one afternoon/evening cooking and then freeze the portions until required. I know in my house if we didn't have dinner prepped we would end up grabbing takeaway.

I would like to jump in here too. Wedding day long over, and no upcoming weddings at the moment. Plenty of family occasions in the offing though.

I have a stone I want to say goodbye to. I have overhauled my diet of late, and eat well most of the time. Walking is my main exercise. I got the Fitbit recently and love it.

Onwards and downwards all of us!

Also jumping in wedding day is next summer and I really want to shift a stone. Started running but need to get back in the gym. I'm trying to get the groom on board so that will help with the food side hopefully!

It definitely is hard with a baby!

Getting the time to do anything other than walking is pretty tough. Also I find I snack way more being at home with her!

It's her first birthday party today and we have a gorgeous cake which I will have to try lol ;(

That's so true.. a friend of mine went back to work recently and lost weight and she realised it was because she wasn't snacking. I need to get focused and once its a habit, part of my day, i'll do it without thinking. oh don't feel bad about trying the cake, that's part of your job ;-) enjoy!

This thread is a bit late for me as my wedding is this summer but I just wanted to share what has worked for me as I have lost weight over the past few months.

I have been a little overweight (BMI 26) for years and getting engaged was the push I needed to get serious and lose the extra 2-3 stone (BMI is now 21). I did it all through diet, no exercise really at all. I didn't spend any extra money either (if anything I saved it). I just downloaded the myfitnesspal app (free), logged everything I ate and kept to a daily calorie deficit. I didn't eat anything weird, generally ate the same as before, just less.

It was honestly much simpler and easier than I thought it would be. Sure there were hard days and I screwed up a few times but I kept logging and kept losing weight and am so so happy with my current weight and feel in total control of my diet and confident in my ability to maintain this weight.

I hope everyone else on this thread has success too :)

I'm in too! Joined a gym and was going regularly until I went on holiday (2 months ago!) and also joined a boot camp but have only gone to half the classes. I'm always full of good intentions but I dunno, it's so hard to keep it up! Haven't even gone near my eating habits which are ****e. I think I need to sit down and write myself a goal list or schedule or something.

You're all amazing, I don't know do I feel inspired or lazier than ever. I sing for around 70 wedding ceremonies a year and in the past month 2 lovely couples sent me footage of me singing which featured on their video and also some photos of me performing. I look horrendous. I've definitely crossed the 12.5 stone threshold again after being just over 11 a few a years ago. Feel so so desperate. My problem is-when I'm exercising routinely and eating really well, I tend to shift nothing, give up hope after 2-3 weeks, stop being strict and end up losing a few pounds by not even trying. Then I get into form again and tend to put on weight when I start back running and doing weights, crunches etc. I know it's not all about what the scales says but if I see the damn thing move one more time in the wrong direction I'm going to go mad.
anybody with any advice? I'm not going to ruin anybody's photo album or video ever again. :o

Have you used my fitnesspal? It's absolutely brilliant for tracking every mouthful you eat.

Also do you drink much water? Not being hydrated can stall weight loss.

It sounds crazy but you also have to make sure you are eating enough food. When changing your diet if your calorie intake drops too low it can stall weight loss because your body tries to hold onto fat reserves. Nobody should ever eat less than 1200 calories per day, and at that 1200 is the minimum to just keep your body going. Myfitnesspal can calculate what your ideal calorie intake is based on your weight/height, how much weight you wish to lose and how much exercise you do.

I definitely needed this thread. I've less than 10 months to go! I've an under active thyroid and pcos so I'm a struggling mess tbh. I used to do the C25K but my energy levels are cruel so I stopped. Would love to start up again! Since January I've lost one stone and would love another two. I've done slimming world before but find all the carbs too convenient and stodgy so trying to take a different spin on things! It's so hard though! Thankfully were back from holidays so that'll be that for this year but I have a busy summer and need to seriously think about exercise too!

I took up the gym a year before our wedding and I've kept up my membership last few years since. I think the key is healthy eating topped up by a regular exercise routine.

I think without routine it's very hard to stay motivated. I've read articles that say studies show that our willpower is limited and the reserve is reduced by willpower decision making. By having a routine that you don't need to think about, you just do it, you reduce the need to decide to exercise, you just do. If it becomes second nature, it's much easier to control your lifestyle with respect to it. I go to my regular classes 3-4 times a week. It takes something important for me to miss it.

I also find it easier when attending classes I enjoy. Our gym offers a range of stuff, kettlebells, HIIT, spinning, step and aqua aerobics, circuit, boxing/MMA conditioning, abs/core blast... You're not gonna keep up the classes if they're a drag or you don't feel like you're part of the group. I've tried them all, I picked ones that suited timewise and that I enjoyed and keep that up for the college year. In summer they often have bootcamp. I've done MMA conditioning for 2 years, and did step for 3 (not this last year as they've changed times and instructors). I started doing spinning this last year and joined yoga at work last 2 years. A lot has been down to having the same instructors and girls in the class that I got on with so it's good banter and looked forward to going every time!

Personally I prefer to exercise more than eat less as I love my food, although on average I eat quite healthy I do love tasty food and big portions of it... so it can be tough. I also sit beside our sweets drop off area at work, so it's impossible to avoid when people come back from holidays with the toblerones, toffiffees and lindor boxes... :o At the moment I'm in my second trimester, and still have food aversions so it's made it easier to stay off the chocolates and coffee!

I know it's hard when you're not happy with what you see in the mirror or a photo, but please try not to be too hard on yourself. I'm no poster child for self love but I know that it's when I'm being cruel to myself that I tend to reach for junk food. I think all this self improvement works better coming from a place of self worth. And just from that post alone I know you're an amazing person with a fantastic creative talent and the drive to work at doing something you love! Best of luck on the getting healthy mission x

I need to lose weight, have for years if I'm honest but hoping the wedding will give me the motivation to really go for it. I love my engagement photos but some of them were a bit of a wakeup call tbh.

My sister and her husband used their engagement period to shed the weight they wanted to lose for years. The wedding was a motivator but they were determined to approach it like a like a lifestyle change so that it would continue after the wedding. They were married in November 2014 and the weight-loss continued afterwards and has been kept off.

So go for it! Great advice in this thread.

I lost some weight for my wedding, but promptly put it all back on again . I'm back on the wagon now, but this time I'm offering myself rewards! I have a white board on my fridge with "Lose X lbs - get Y!". The crowning glory is a Diane Von Furstenberg dress :D

Same here Faith lost well a bit nothing serious more toning.. But have started back on things now and went out and picked up a pack of silver star stickers. So for every day I do something I get one star... I do actually feel good putting a star in each day or working towards maybe 3 stars.. Sad isn't it :)

I found little changes like having herbal teas in work instead of coffees and sugar, having porridge in the mornings, not buying crisps to even pick at in the cupboard or keeping it only for the weekend or something..

Regarding the fitness side of it, I have so hoped to do more but do you know looking back on the photos now there aren't too bad and I did feel pretty. What Redchairs said it true and so so nice, it isn't all about fitness and this and that tis about how you sometimes too in the inside...

I found doing the 10 day abb challenge worked great for toning up in general...

Now haha I got to maybe around 20 max of each thing and cut it down then to maybe have the things, when I wasn't feeling it.. But I defo noticed the toning up must say the butt is great after the I am lost for the name of what they are called. But when you lie down and kinda push your pelvis upwards (whatever they are called) they are good and the side kicks if you need to tone the upper leg...

I should take my own advice but clear out all the junk food from the cupboards. I rarely buy treat foods but on the occasions we have them in the house I will eat them, and in larger quantities than I like to admit. I must bring all the junk we have into work and let my colleagues have them before I eat the lot.

My reward when I complete my current round of couch to 5k is a new pair of runner! And when I complete an arm toning plan I'm going to get a new swimsuit for my holliers.

I did a really hard* (for me) Pilates class and ate well yesterday, everything into my fitness pal and well within my limits, and I feel awful today..

I can barely move and am so tired, I've been gulping water down but that's not helping, it's so hard to stay motivated when I feel like this :(
