What's the weather like for the weekend?

Chance of rain according to the BBC Weather :D

I always get reminded of Schumachers pole lap here from 2012 when I see Monaco now. Ok I know it technically wasn't a pole lap because of a grid penalty that he had incurred in the previous race, but that aside, it was a masterful piece of driving. His second career was largely fraught with misfortune, some errors near the start, and unreliability...but that day in 2012 he showed that he still had it. At 43 years old, he took a very middling Mercedes around Monaco faster than anyone else could. It was a real treat to watch that live.

Hamilton totally dominates first practice.....by one tenth of a second.

Totally unbiased reporting there by Andrew Benson as usual.:)

A manhole cover became dislodged and damaged 2 cars. Can we finally take this track out and shoot it please?

Think I'll probably keep the coverage on mute until the racing to avoid hearing the term 'glitz and glamour'.

Given how boring the race is, and the coverage devoted to glitz, yachts, parties and glamour, wouldn't the Expose team on TV3 be best equipped to cover the weekend?

    Snoozy-snooze

You want to end the Monaco Grand Prix because a manhole cover became loose? :D Come on now.

If you hate it so much .. probably best to avoid this thread because most others seem to enjoy the race and qualifying.

It is almost universally a truly awful 'race' to watch though. The only chance of any excitement, is someone messing up & clipping the barrier.

Hmm, not so sure...it's a spectacle all right and a real test of driver ability/accuracy...but as a race, man it's bloody boring.

As a manhole bacame loose during the race a few years ago. The main reason I want rid of it is because it a track that isn't fit for purpose. Manholes aside, it's out of date and it leads to boring races.

How could someone complain about the lack of overtaking in F1, and enjoy the Monaco GP? The only good thing is the camera can get so close to the cars. Other than that it's super boring racing.

Do they? I hear the media tell us how it's a fan favourite. I've never spoken to anyone who enjoys the actual race above all other races, mostly because of the fact that overtaking is so difficult

Monaco in the wet is the best race on the calendar, bar none. Time to do the rain dance!!

Irony isn't lost that due to strikes at refineries there's fuel rationing in most of France at the moment.

Any race in the rain is more memorable that a dry race at the same track. Partly because of the added danger, unpredictability and how rare wet races are. You wouldn't want it every race or form would become meaningless.

Street tracks in the rain are something different to be fair. Definately not worth keeping it to watch 9 snooze fests, waiting for one wet race where anything can happen - even an interesting race!

There was talk of rain for Sunday so hopefully that will come along to spice things up a little.

The manhole thing could have been very nasty - Jenson was a lucky boy!

This is an article about first practice.......

"From Hamilton, it was the sort of performance that defines an image, that will be remembered down the years as illustrative of a towering talent."

Is this some strange form of fellatio with the written word from Benson ?

Riccardo smashed Hamiltons times now with a 1:14.6 so RedBull seem to be in the mix for at least a podium. Curious what Bensons headline now will be. :pac:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,378 ✭✭✭HighLine

Whatever about people's opinions of the race being boring - the parts I have seen of practice 1 & 2 have been epic. Cars hitting barriers left, right and centre. Ricciardo on the absolute limit. Brundle was commentating from the Nouvelle chicane and you would swear it was the last lap of a world championship deciding finale. Great to hear him still be genuinely excited for the job he does.

Now all we need is for Ricciardo to stick it on pole on Saturday and some light rain for Sunday.

Fingers crossed they will be but let's wait and see what happens in Q3. :)

Don't the Mercs always sandbag during practice? Granted their engine won't make as much a difference here (and Ricciardo has an engine upgrade) but they still have the best overall package. Looking forward to quali. Hopefully Max can stick it on the second row or better.

IMO Red Bull are there to challenge Mercedes. Need to wait later for a long run analysis, so far Riccardo already 36 laps on one set of ultrasoft. But in practice both RB and Mercedes are within one second followed by the Toro Rosso. Vettel crashed and Kimi is also not close to them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,378 ✭✭✭HighLine

Seems like the new RedBull power unit works well.

Monaco coming at the right time so for RB. I'm not getting too excited just yet, Monaco is an anomaly of a track & can make things look very different to how they really are. If they're challenging the Merc after Monaco, I'll be delighted

Wow that's an impressive improvement! I feckin missed the actual session. Got in from work and only FP1 recorded.:(

It's tough not to get excited though. :p The next race in Canada should give a good idea where they are in general. That said, there are at least 5 more races this season, where top speed isn't as important, where they could take it to Merc. Hungary, Mexico, Austria etc should be good for them.

Monaco though, the podium will in all honesty be largely decided on Saturday. Track position is the key to winning the race. The only other track like it in that regard is Singapore. They certainly seemed to be able for the Ferrari's in Spain, so with the new upgrade, here's hoping :)

Unless your name is Lewis Hamilton and your team cock up a safety car period in the last few laps of the race! :pac:

In fairness, that wasn't entirely Mercedes' fault. The team should have told him to stay out, but Lewis wanted to pit too. Lewis didn't take a single bit of responsibility afterwards!

Whatever about Ricciardo potentially being in a position to win, I'm very impressed with where Torro Rosso finished in FP2. Kvyat was only 2 and a half tenths behind Verstappen!

From memory, the team couldn't tell him where Nico was...so he had to make the decision without some very crucial information. I gather that was the source of his frustration.

Looks like it'll be a good race. Looking forward to qualifying to see what Mercedes have in reserve.

I reckon they're holding back, but not by the normal amount. Red Bull once again look genuinely impressive, so who knows. FP3 will give a closer indication of what to expect for Quali, but I'm half leaning towards thinking that Ricciardo might just nick pole

Re Massa wiping out in FP1...wasn't it he who wiped out in fp1 AND fp2 at the exact same spot one year here at Monaco?

Button and Kvyat have both done more than enough to get to Q2, it seems. Kimi needs a good place, though, he has a 5-place penalty because of a gearbox change.

edit: Oh, Max ... cut that corner too fine.

Second time today Max hits barrier, wonder is he just over driving for some reason

The slow mo replay of max clipping the first barrier was amazing. That milisecond where his suspension broke was a great camera shot.

Shame he's out but he got a bit greedy in the corner and got punished. The one good thing Monaco has is no massive run off areas
