Thanks OP. This will serve me well on holidays with the kids - hosting movies for tablets, and providing wifi so they play Minecraft together. After a full day of fun outdoor activities of course. :)

Just reading up on another site it also works with Apples drive app too if using on an iPad. Plenty of functionality for that price really.

probably. from android yes. not sure about apple.

some reviews here. basically you may run into some issues but if computer savvy should be ok.

I found a manual and there is an android and iOS app that you can get from the relevant app stores.
Linky for Manual (it's download, the apps are Windows and Mac apps in this link): https://support.lenovo.com/be/en/documents/acc100107

Think I'll pick up on for these for trips away :) Specially when u can recharge a phone/tablet from it...

As said, probably yes. BUT. You probably know this, but just be beware that that is not backing up. Moving files from your phone or laptop onto an external drive is not backing them up. If you lose the external drive, or it fails, you've lost them. If anything is important, make sure you have multiple copies on multiple devices.

good deal for the extra features imo. defo handy for bringing media on hols. says it's 340g (12 american ounces) on the amazon.com link so not super heavy either. I wonder how long it would run on the internal battery alone - couple of hours I would guess. although I do wonder if multiple devices could effectively access media (e.g. watching a movie) simultaneously effectively - it only has one hard drive reading head after all - may need to copy the file over to the target device first.

no. it's just storage, albeit with wifi. it won't host plex.

How do you charge this device when on holidays with just a tablet and mobile?

How do you charge this device when on holidays with just a tablet and mobile?

    Pg. 6 Quick User Guide:
    Charging the F800
Use the accompanying USB cable to connect the F800 via its Micro USB3.0 port to an 5V DC adapter (not provided in box) or other charging device to charge the F800; while charging, the battery indicator will flash; when the battery is full, the battery indicator will turn off.

On a cursory look, no further mention in the main user manual

I'm thinking of trying it in the car - have an old phone I've repurposed as an mp3 / media player, but it only takes a 32gb card - could put my entire music collection on it if wifi streaming works well

in the amazon.com reviews it appears one guy got it to connect to his home wifi router (so not using the device itself as the wifi network)

so the advantage of using then this at home would be a low power storage device accessible over wifi

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat network NAS backup device - small!
    ByBrian W.on May 27, 2015
    Verified Purchase
For a small 1TB drive with a built-in wireless router, Ethernet connectivity and a battery, this is an awesome value for $99. Backed up my entire PC and this works great over my home network (after some setup changes). Manual leaves a little to be desired and is in somewhat broken English, but if you can get past that this thing works great. It's a laptop-sized 2.5" drive inside which makes this the smallest NAS device I have seen. Slightly bigger than an external, portable WD My Passport unit. It will be my networked backup drive for my laptop's SSD drive (512GB) and at some point I may see if it can be backed up while connected wirelessly to my network inside a fire safe. Overall, this unit looks great, is small and has features that are helpful.
