A nice little warm up for the Cruiserweight unification bout on Saturday happens tomorrow night. Kalenga vs. Dorticos for the regular version of Lebedev's WBA strap. Some of ye might remember Kalenga, Lebedev fought him a while back. An awful tough cookie who dropped Lebedev and fought admirably against him. He's a fierce strong lad who loves a scrap. Dorticos is a bit of a sensation, very good KO power which seems to be a mandatory requirement for a contender in the CW division, never mind an elite boxer, and has very good fundamentals too as to be expected from a Cuban. This is a big step up for him though. It should be an absolute barnbuner and it's a tough one to call.

    Isn't Haye fighting this weekend?

I'm intrigued by this Kalenga fight. I remember watching Kalenga on a pro show down in the stadium a while back and got the impression that he's tough rather than overly skilful. I haven't seen the Cuban but looking at his record you'd have to wonder what he's like the longer the fight goes on.

Joesph Parker is on Sky Sports on saturday at midday which is great. I think Parker has the fastest hands in that division and doesn't really box like a slow and ponderous heavyweight that's ubiquitous in the current division. However, you'd have to wonder if it's his padded record that makes him look a million dollars.

There's some really good fights on in the states:

Trout v Charlo is a chessmatch I'd like to watch.

Jermell Charlo v John Jackson is really interesting. Jackson was boxing the ears off Andy Lee until he got knocked out with that beautiful right hook.

Lara v Martirosyan is a rematch after their draw. Neither fighter really excite me but it's still a very competitive fight.

Are boxnation showing the Russian card? I think Bivol on the undercard will
be a name to add in the lightheavy mix. That division is starting to come along nicely with some good former amateur fighters from the eastern bloc.

I'm a massive fan of Parker, this will show if he's legit, Takam is a tough opponent. David Haye claimed the other day that Takam is a tougher opponent than anyone Joshua has faced...it's a big test for Parker.

Trout/Charlo is interesting as Trout is an awkward southpaw with very good boxing skills. I like the Charlo's but they're being protected heavily. I mean beating K9 Bundrage for a world title is nothing to get excited about too much, although it was impressive how methodical Charlo was. They could both easily lose this weekend.

Vanes/Lara should be a lot closer on paper than it is but it's hard to look past Lara. However, Lara is Lara, anything can happen. Vanes is an extremely honest and passionate fighter, he'll give it socks anyway.

I cannot wait to see Bivol again, I think he's the future of that division. Chakhkiev is on that card too, I love watching him fight. If he has any sort of a chin and gas tank he'd be incredible. Keep an eye out for Salamov as well, a decent fighter from what I have seen. The LHW division is absolutely stacked with Eastern Europeans when you look at the likes of Gvozdyk, Mekhontsev and Shabransky on the come up.

French card is underway. An APB fight featuring the very promising Tony Yoka just finished, Yoka won by 4th round KO. Very promising talent, looks super agile for a super heavy.

Kalenga/Dorticos ring walks now. Fight is on Canal + France for anyone wanting to watch.

    Dorticos/Kalenga
Dorticos won by 10th round ref stoppage. What a fight, lads ye'll have to catch this one on YT when it's put up. Most rounds were all out war, Kalenga probably done himself over being too aggressive and wild, although I had him up on the cards barely before the stoppage. Dorticos looks legit though. Took some serious punches flush, very good technically with a beautiful jab and uppercut. Dropped Kalenga in the second round. Lebedev has a tough fight on his hands in him after Ramirez tomorrow.

The Parker/Takam card is underway. Not sure when the main fight will be on, but should be soonish enough. It's on Sky Sports 3.

Parker another hype job, defence is terrible.

    116-112 116-112 115-113 win for Parker.

Can't argue with those scores, but Parker didn't look that great.

Impressive the way Parker grinded out that win, as he looked gassed. A little work on the stamina and defence and he'll go very far. He's beaten a top top HW in Takam.

Takam isn't a top top Heavyweight, he's 35 and past his best. He's a good solid test, a better opponent would have put Parker away tonight.

He's a very good HW, and a proven top HW at that. He's a top 10 HW imo. 35 is not old by HW standards and he hasn't been a pro for ages to be fair. His fight with Povetkin was a super close one, and Povetkin was considered the #2 HW in the world at the time before that freak KO, and we've seen Povetkin get done for drugs since.

It's a very strong name to have on one's resume as a 24 y/o prospect. He showed good chin tonight too. I might be biased as I like Parker, but tonight was very impressive the way he grinded out the win. His boxing skills are super for a 24 y/o HW.

I put 5 euro at 16/1 on Arnold Gjergjaj to beat David Haye.

    Haye Day me arse.

Well that was an embarrassment on Dave, how did that tattooed guy ever get a licence?

Bivol was super impressive earlier on, showing great skill and IQ and knocking his man dow a few times, who was a very durable opponent. That 12 rounder will stand to him. He's a super super prospect.

Chakhkiev looked awful, he's seemed to have changed his style, which is what made me a big fan of his.

    Kudra is on now.

On a side note, the armchair hasn't had a minute's rest all day. I watched most of the NZ card first thing out of bed this morning, followed by watching a super stage of the Giro D'Italia then mixed and matched between the GAA, FA Cup and now this card. Perfect lazy Saturday :D

What's the verdict? I was guilty of been part of that train but apart from power, I think he'll struggle with quicker cruisers.

His power is truly freakish but yeah he's very flat footed and average in everything else. But yeah I agree, any lad worth his crust would land at ease and would avoid counters. His power gives him a chance against anyone though, it's scary.

what a great card, Briggs destroys a can in one round.

I don't know what's more embarrassing, Briggs's opponent tonight or Brigg's WBA ranking of 7!

A Lebedev/Huck rematch would be great. Grigory Drozd was doing analysis, wouldn't mind seeing him fight him either.

I clicked on it again, it's definitely working. Not sure if it happened yet but Sofya Ochigava was meant to be on the undercard.

Worked great for me thanks. Ochigava won early on but doesn't seem to be on the feed.

Even though this whole Dave TV thing is a complete joke, not having to bear through Halling and Watt is always a blessing. Especially seeing as they were on earlier. It's the little things huh :pac:

Haye's ring walk is so drawn out it'll be longer than this fight and the De Mori fight combined.

Will he last this round ?

Yeah they're surely his former CW belts and his WBA HW belt. Pretty sad if you ask me but all part of the marketing I guess.

Piss off Haye you joke of a man.

Absolute embarrassment, why are they booing though? They are the bunch of mugs who paid to go and see that!

That bum Haye was fighting should never be let in a ring again unless it's to clean it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,488 ✭✭✭Andre 3000

Complete farce of a fight, but at least he's staying active and moving up the rankings. He'll have to face someone decent next surely.
