Charge for condiments, butter etc.

Few days ago popped into local shop (part of one of the larger convenience groups), spotted some nice scones and picked up a few to take into work for morning break. Asked at deli counter for few butters and couple jams and continued to counter to pay. At the till, I was asked had the lady at deli said if there was a charge of the butters and jam, she hadn't. Popped in again this morning. Picked up same but this time, lady at deli printed barcode to take to till while apologising profusely on charges (.20 each).

I'm a little peeved by it to be honest. It's a local shop, see the same faces every day, popping in for milk, bread, papers, fuel and deli. I can understand if left on counter and someone was to grab a handful but surely one piece per scone is reasonable??

Local takeaway (again part of larger chain) used to do this too for a time but have since quit thankfully. Looking for 5 or 10 cent for vinegar while at same time throwing in a load of ketchups which I didn't want.

I know it's only a few cent but here comes that great cliche :p - "it's the principle of it".

they don't get them for free, so it's either charge separately for them, or factor it into a higher price for those scones, and possibly other items
    'user pays' is better imo.

I suppose you're free to take your principles to another shop that can afford to give out free butter then aren't you?

If you don't pay for it directly they will increase price of scone meaning if you don't want any for your scone you have to pay more anyway, subsidising those who do.

There is also an element of if it is free some pr**k will take advantage and take loads.

I say its fairly standard practice for shop what ever about coffeshop

some places charge and some places don't... it doesn't bother me much either way.

A local café charged me €2 for 2 extra slices of brown bread for soup a couple of years ago, I haven't been back.

The chipper down the road charges extra for salt and vinegar.

Now THAT should be made illegal.

    What next?

    - How much for the chips?
    "2 euro!"
    - Here you go.
    "Okay, hold out your hands."
    - What?
"Chips are 2 euro. Bags are 1.50"
    - Feck's sake.
*Checks pockets* *Sighs* *Holds out hands*

I went to college with a girl who was so mean that although she used ketchup on absolutely everything, she would never buy a bottle of it and would rob sachets and sachets out of the college canteen instead

A box of Mayonaisse sachets costs me €24 to buy in. The cost needs to be recovered somehow, however I dont charge for them. I charge for ramekins of dips and gravy/pepper sauce to cover the cost

The weirdest thing about that though is that you work as a bus driver, don't you?

If it's a shop, I understand why they charge.
It's usually a 'convenience' shop, and you pay for the convenience of having the products you want nearby.

If it's a cafe / restaurant, and they change me extra for butter for my scone (or ketchup for my chips), I'll tell them where they can stick it...

You put the idea in their heads OP.

Next time I see a bus with 'Mayo' on the front, I'll think again...

    No

    *sigh*

Well I'm glad you restauranteurs haven't lost your sense of humour anyways.

I get charged for butter and condiments at work.

Unless the shop had the butter and jam in with the scone why would you assume that they are free?

Must try that in lidl later when I get a few baps for lunch. What you mean that the coleslaw, cheese and hang isn't included in the price of the bap, I'll be straight onto Joe Duffy.

Or should you get a free pint of milk with breakfast ceral, free buns with burgers etc?

    Those butters don't wrap themselves.

Except, of course, the Mexican self-wrapping butter.

Canteen at old workplace used to charge 15c for ketchup sachets. Madness.

Our canteen is subsidised but they charge for tea/coffee. If you take a teabag in a cup, its 15c, if you take a paper cup on its own its 15c. They're some shower

I meant a teabag in a mug, not a paper cup :pac: They'll charge you for a teabag and cup if you take it in one

Businesspeople can broadly be divided into two groups, those that charge for a good or service they provide, and those that make money from a good or service they provide.

Being good at one does not necessarily make you good at the other.

Yeah, decent point. You're right - I wouldn't expect them for free in places like Lidl or Dunnes etc. Guess it's down to the set up of the shop - i.e. on where the main focus is deli, scones, croissants etc. takeaway tea/coffee service.

I think the fact the lady at deli counter gave them to me for free the last day and it's obvious the other one at till subsequently pulled her on it hence the introduction of charges. It's strange though - they surely must have had a policy before this and my guess is it wasn't to charge. Up until now I have always purchased pastries rather than scones so never asked for the butter before. They've always had them though - big tub of them alongside the cold meats etc behind deli counter.

First came across this about 15 years ago.
Was in a local cafe sitting down to eat a chip.
Noticed there was no vinegar on the table so asked for some.
    Told I have to pay.
    I didn't and said I won't be back.
    It closed shortly after.

I like it being split out, also out of principle.

I can see online catering places charging 5.50 for 100 butter portions. That is 5.5cent each, so they are charging 4 times that. Coffee costs about 10 cent and a bit more to heat the water etc. Tea bags must be only a few cent too. The ingredients and energy in the scone must be minimal. So relatively speaking its one of the lowest markup items in the place.

Similar to whingers complaining about being charged a euro or 2 for a pint of miwadi in a pub.

name & location? is this a traditional Italian style chipper and is this for another splash of vinegar and salt, i.e. not sachets.

In general sachets are stupidly expensive.

I don't mind paying for condiments when the food is already relatively cheap. What I hate is when you're not given condiments in fast food outlets. Its just poor customer service.
