It reads an awful lot like a suicide but even if it's not, it's sad either way if he's not found.

Lots of signs for the Samaritans as you head towards the cliff. Pity people feel the need to take their own life. Hope the family can recover the body so a proper burial can take place.

Was up there few weeks ago and had a mini panic attack when I crossed over the makeshift wall to look down. Its some fall. Many have lost their lives there and an abandoned car in the car park is usually a sign. Must be in a desperate place to come to that point, poor sods.:(

Wow, It's not who I think it is, is it ?
I hope not, quite enjoy his presence in the world.

RTE are reporting he was 64 and there's no mention of his profession. 4 days in now and still no sign.

Well we knew that Sinead O'Connor was missing for five or so hours and has been found safe and well now.

This man is obviously well known. It doesn't look good for him, sadly.

Anyway, we will know in a day or two. Not that we will remember him beyond a few days either. That is the reality.

Still no news of whether this guy is still missing or has been found?

Reports of a body pulled from the water this morning

Reports of a body pulled from the water this morning
RTE only published this today. It's very strange that they believe he fell in the water last night when he's been missing since Friday morning.

"The body of a man has been recovered from the water at Liscannor Harbour in Co Clare.

The man, understood to be in his 60's, is believed to have fallen into the water last night or early this morning.

Valentia Coastguard said the man's body was found floating between two boats at around 2am.

That's what I initially thought until they mentioned his age, it's very coincidental.

May or may not be them but what I don't understand is why they didn't give the persons name and a picture so perhaps if someone saw them they could call authorities, person could have been hanging around a pier or cliff all day contemplating it.

Exactly. "A well known radio and tv pundit who's a member of the legal profession".... Well then tell people who it is!

And what about people who know the man, should the family not be allowed to control how this information is released? Or should the curiosity of random strangers take priority?

Alan Shatter crossed my mind as the person and such a high profile person would explain the lack of information published so far.

I understand the need for privacy initially when a body is found as the family must be notified, but this is a missing person report.

There's been rumours that it was Gerald Kean but the age was wrong. Then this tweet yesterday: https://twishort.com/Mg3kc and now a news report that it's believed he fell in the water last night.

If this does turn out to be Gerald Kean then is there a responsibility on the Gardai for not making the information public sooner? It would mean that he had been hanging around for days contemplating this without anyone being able to call with a tip off.

Can I remind you that we can't really speculate on identies here, if it's not in the public, it's not on here either.

What an odd phone call that must've been:

    "Are you still alive?"

    ".. er .. yes."

I live not far from the cliffs, most people in the Clare area know someone who ended up at the bottom of it.

It's an eerie place in the evening, great scenery and it's making money for tourism but the bottom is littered with sadness.

The only good that can come out of this if the death is as we suspect that it may shine some focus on what is undoubtedly a major issue in this country ripping family's apart. Suicide is a national crisis at the moment.:(

maybe the family wanted to protect his "reputation" in the hope that everything worked out ok and he was found alive somewhere

no good to him now though

I suppose as a solicitor reputation would be everything but they could have said he took a bad reaction to meds and was in a confussed state or something to cover it.

Disregarding any of that, if it's the same man as was found today, then he's been contemplating this for 5 days so there's a strong possibility that someone would have seen him and reported it. It's heartbreaking!

    From Breakingnews.ie

The body of a man has been recovered from the water in a harbour in Co Clare, writes Patrick Flynn.
The man, understood to be in his 60's, is believed to have fallen into the water at Liscannor Harbour late last night.
His body was found floating between two boats at around 2am by a local man who alerted the emergency services.

Gardaí and members of the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard responded to the scene.
The body was recovered from the water and taken to the nearby pier before being removed to University Hospital Limerick for a post mortem examination.
Gardaí are investigating the discovery, but it is believed to be a tragic accident.
Meanwhile, the search will continue today for a man feared missing in west Clare area since last Friday.
The search is being concentrated along the coast from Hags Head to Blackhead

Very little news coverage about this.

I suppose the silence is, as other posters, have said, to protect the persons' privacy, if it in fact turned out that he just went on the missing list for a while and had not, in fact taken his own life.

I remember when the son of Chef Derry Clarke was in a coma, the press reported it as an accident. The family wanted it this way, should he come through, in order to protect his reputation etc. Sadly, he passed away and it was only then that this parents revealed that he had in fact taken his own life :(

Is he still missing, seems to have disappeared off the Radar, seen as he's so high profile surprised there hasn't been more on it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 688 ✭✭✭UpCork

I know I am wondering this too, why nothing on it.

If whoever it is took their own life, then you'll likely not see much coverage of it.

Plus, I mean, they haven't found their body yet, right, so everything would be speculation right now.

He's fairly high profile will be headline news once it goes public. I'm just wondering had it been called off as no mention of anyone since.

A body has been found, according to UTV Ireland.

    http://utv.ie/News/2016/05/20/Mans-body-recovered-off-Clare-coast-59262

The article has just been posted, so I'm assuming this is not about the body found a few days ago.

Yea, very close to 60 but not till next year.

Is this a fact or are you guessing who it is?

How about we wait until a formal identification has been carried out and the family members informed before making assumptions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,696 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Is this a fact or are you guessing who it is?

Told a few days ago who it was, I'm not 100% sure but the source is good, I'd be shocked if it is and so will a good few people. Doesn't make a lot of sense, never does I suppose though.

Won't say any more, will be headline news in a few hours if it's him.
