Admittedly, this has happened countless times before with 2FM. New account, info posted, account closed.

It has usually turned out to be true, but not always. From memory, Nicky Byrne, Will Leahy/Rick O'Shea/Colm Hayes getting punted to weekends and Chris Greene joining were all 'announced' in this manner.

We've also been told, not guaranteed to be accurate, that the existing weekend contracts are all about to end.

I could see this happening, but seen enough one post account rumours to know better than to get my hopes too high.

No Ruth Scott on yesterday. JJ was on instead and said she would be off for the next few weeks. Wonder will she be back for one last farewell show or is she gone already.

Hope Ruth is not leaving 2fm. I miss the banter with her and paddy

Always found they were both better when the other was off.

The entire 2fm weekend schedule is poor bar Jenny green and I'd bear will lehay but Saturday morning is pathetic and I don't get Sunday evenings when half the country is driving after 7pm the radio is unlistenable.

Please do. I would have thought after 7pm Sunday was the definition of a graveyard slot.

You'd be surprised actually. Roads are always fairly busy at that time on a Sunday due to a combination of students returning to college after the weekend, families returning from day trips, people doing the weekly shop, people returning from matches, etc.

Wouldn't be "half the country" by any stretch, but I would agree with the poster that there is an unserved market there to be capitalised on.

Sounds like it whenever i hear the radio on the bus,
It wasn't when she teamed up with Rick & Ruth in the mornings, was that before or after Marty in the Morning

I usually tune into Jim O Neill's On The Road Again, if i'm outside, he used to have Classic Gold Sun on afternoons, but is better suited to this timeslot.

My brother travels on Sun after dinner for work next day, so anything to pass away the 3hrs he drives, is handy!

Btw: JPS Penpal, kinda gives it away somewhat? & doesn't he have history with boards, away back when the two had a 10pm slot?

I wonder is Ray doing both 98fm+2fm, cos didn't Muireann O Connell cover a slot over the Mayday w/end & afaik is with 98fm?

Muireann has covered on both 98fm and todayfm but since they are both in the same group it's not that suprising. Ray left 98fm so I don't understand how he could do both 98fm and 2fm. Also that combo wouldn't work IMO.

I believe Marty in the Morning was directly after Rick and Ruth.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Tracy was the only primetime show that actually gained listeners on the last book.
I like her, I switch straight over once Louise Galvin comes on.

No idea, how often do they look at figures? She's not there that long so not sure how they'd do the figures.

I didn't know they were part of the group, i forget how many Do'B owns!
Did Muireann work in the mornings with Ray+JP@98FM?
as i could have sworn i saw a pic with them?
I thought Edele, (not Adele, as she often said:rolleyes:) was still with them?

Nah, yer right that wouldn't work, as didn't other stations not play Nicky's Euro song, not that wasn't the reason he didn't win:p

On the newsstand i saw there was a special in the Daily mail on Sun, talking about 'new show & those ratings' was the headline!
I believe Marty in the Morning was directly after Rick and Ruth.

That was it, although now when i think of it, was that the second time he got the heave from 2FM?
As often i heard that Chumbawamba was his unofficial theme tune :p

Poor career choice to leave Today FM where he had successful tenure I felt.

2FM could do with him in the afternoon slot weekdays

See, I get where you're coming from there, and I both disagree and agree with it.

They said themselves at the time that they probably could have stayed at Today FM indefinitely, but that they had become bored with lunchtimes and wanted to try something new. They'd been doing the lunchtime show for what, 7 years by the time they left?

Plus they've said before that they were getting more money at 98, so I totally get why they moved. Dempsey wasn't going anywhere, so their only real options were to jump ship to 2FM, or stay in the communicorp group and go to 98.

That said, it was a huge gamble that didn't pay off. They've never been that popular in Dublin and Foley's style doesn't really suit uber-tight formatting IMO.

So essentially what I'm getting at is, sure the move didn't work out and has probably damaged his cache as a presenter, but at the time I totally get why they made the move.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭zoobizoo

    Yeah fair point.

But I think that going to 98 would have been a retrograde step in anyone's career - going from national to local.

Maybe they felt that doing a morning show would have given them leverage to do a morning show nationally.

Safe to say this isn't happening...doubt they would have him appear on air with no promotion tomorrow. Interesting to hear Louise Duffy say at the end of her show that after a 3 week holiday Ann Gleeson will be back in a different role at Today FM with "a lot changing around Today FM"...

That's probably just a reference to Fergal moving to daytime and Phil leaving Friday Night 80's...

While I'd love ti to happen, I just can't see Foley back at Today FM... He seemed to be very bitter about the goings on there while he was at 98.

I would imagine when Fergal Darcy takes over from Louise Duffy he will no longer be on weekends aswell!

The new role for Ann on air will be interesting, don't see her fitting with Darcy or any other current show on air right now. As for Foley, I wouldn't hold much stock in the piss taking he did with Today FM when they were at 98, Foley being Foley...sure he ripped 98 to shreds on air at Today FM in the run up to leaving there to go to 98...

You could be right. I dunno though, I always got a very bad vibe whenever he was slagging Today FM, both on air at 98 and in the NTN.

Money talks of course, and it's been a year since NTN ended and 6 months since he's been on 98, so who knows.

iradio is where I can see him next.

A Google search tells me the commute from Dublin to Athlone is 90minutes though. What with him having 2 young kids and regular enough TV work, that could be an issue you'd imagine.

Also wouldn't iRadio be very yoof focused? I don't think he'd really appeal to the bottom end of the 15-34's much these days.

I think with his TV commitments and family life safe to say it will be a Dublin based station...safe to assume not Newstalk or Today FM given they have both just announced schedule changes so doubt they will have a separate announcement for Foley. Highly doubtful it would be a local Dublin station though as 98FM wasn't successful...that leave Nova (who are expanding across the country) and 2FM weekdays...hmmm...

I just noticed I used the term has been in the above comment, fairly apt I suppose as we're talking about Ray Foley.
