Lower blood pressure quickly

    Hi all.

    I am looking for some advice on ways to lower blood pressure safely and quickly. I have to have my bp re assessed for a job. It's very high at the minute and I am afraid I might miss out on this fantastic opportunity because of it.

    I know it's a serious issue and I plan on tackling it. Preferably without the need for meds. Can anyone point me in the direction of a diet that will help me lower and maintain my bp in the long term?

    Also I would appreciate any tips on safe ways to drop it in the short term just to get me low enough to be able to accept the position. Are there quick acting foods?

    I have been told to donate a pint of blood and use aspirin no idea if it would help or if it is even safe so think I will skip that and try something more natural.

    Any advice appreciated

    Be well hydrated and relaxed. Try "tapping" or meditation to help relax you. Large doses of turmeric (the stuff that makes curry powder yellow) on an empty stomach (or with tea) are supposed to help, as is fenugreek. Stop salt (including sodium-containing supplements and seasonings), caffeine, and stress for a few days before the test. Aspirin has a blood thinning effect, but can raise your blood pressure, as can ibuprofen and many other over-the-counter medications. Donating a pint of blood isn't necessary. Supplement with potassium and magnesium (any form of magnesium besides oxide, which is useless), but don't take too much potassium at the same time that you are cutting out sodium, and be aware that magnesium supplementation can make you a little sleepy. None of these are solutions for the long term. Only losing excess weight, reducing stress, eating mostly whole unprocessed plant-based foods lightly cooked, and careful maintenance by a medical professional are acceptable in the long term.

    Other than that... don't reduce your BP a large amount very fast before you drive or do anything else important. Your BP might still be "high" but it will be low for you, and your body will freak out.

    Thanks for the tips. I think this was the wake up call I needed to get myself healthy. I plan to stick to a healthy diet and will try to cut out as many processed foods as possible. I will have no caffeine and no salt


    I've only ever used tumeric in a curry. By large amounts of Tumeric do you mean to take it raw should I mix it with water? Sorry if that's a silly question.

    Not silly at all, but this is not the place to "prescribe". Google "turmeric supplementation for high blood pressure" for ideas.

    Don't drink alcohol the night before, it raises bp. Get adequate rest, fatigue also raises bp. Good luck.
