I am 57 and walk about 3 miles - 4 miles a day but my husband says its too much exercise. I am not under weight or over weight and can't seem to find out whether this amount of walking is o.k., any ideas?

What reason does he give for saying it's too much? Do you have any injuries or difficulties? If there are concerns it's your doctor should be advising on how much you should be getting.

OP: If there are specific health concerns, you would be better advised to visit your doctor. If there are not and you're just wondering how much is too much, I can move your thread to a more suitable place - let me know.

Why does he say it is too much?

Only you know what the right amount is - we are all different.

No specific health concerns at all, just curious to know how much is too much.

Just that he thinks too much exercise might be bad for your joints (he had a knee replaced due to arthritis)

If you don't suffer from any joint problems then, as far as I'm aware, you can feel free to walk as much as you like. Splashing out on a good pair of walking shoes will help keep you joints healthy too, some shoe shops will do gait analysis to determine what type you need.

If you have any queries, or even just to put your husband's mind at rest, go talk to your GP to get a clean bill of health.

My father is 75 and walks 5 to 6 km everyday and has done for many years. He's very fit and active and it gets him out of the house. All good.

If you're not having any problems or pains, then keep it up. My mother is 73 and she would be ok with walking 3 miles - although probably wouldn't do it everyday. Her attitude is that so long as she can do, she will keep doing it.

I know a number of women in my village in their late 60s/early 70's would do a decent walk everyday & I have even seen them out in bad weather too.

So as others have said, unless you have specific concerns, keep it up.

Dad is 65 and has stents in, and he walks about 5 miles everyday. My mum is 62 and walks a little less but still does it.
I think if you don't have any difficulty doing that distance, keep it up!

If you don't wear out you'll rust out! Keep moving, age is only a number. Your capable of a lot at 57 plus (assuming in good health etc).

I also recommend doing a little strength work; maybe post in fitness forum for suitable bodyweight exercise for your age group.

Maintaining muscle mass and bone health (you won't look all muscles don't worry) is probably the best thing you could do for your health as you get older.

    Your husband will kill me!

Thanks all so so much. I am in very good health, thankfully so I will carry on with my enjoyable walks. As I say I roughly walk for about an hour and hour and a half max almost every day.
