Who would blame them? It's not such a stretch to suggest that RTE might be looking for a 'celebrity' of some sort who might slot in and do Late Date on a regular basis in 2017? in the long term, replacing people who know something about music with celebrities might be the way to go................... ;) who knows?

I liked (like) Lilian a lot too, but I don't think it's a matter of Fiachna having taken her job. I get the feeling there was something else going on behind the scenes, so abrupt was her departure, and she kind of hinted at that, too.

Alf McCarthy was blamed for Lilian leaving, and was quite emotional in having to deny that. Are we all now blaming Fiachna? Really.

Ah, nobody is blaming Fiachna for anything. But Fiachna replaced Lillian, I mean that's not a dig or anything, just a statement of fact. No idea what was going through the minds of the montrose bigwigs, but sidelining a show's most popular presenter still doesn't make any sense to me. Unless some young budding Veronica Guerin comes up with "late date: the inside scoop", I doubt we'll ever find out what really went on in the murky montrose corridors last year.

Just the 2 Hot House Flowers tracks last night then. Along with the obligatory plug for the new album (its available on the website ONLY in case you didn't know, get on there right NOW), a wave of texts read out (sure what can he do, everybody wants to tell him how great his band is), a few choice anecdotes thrown in. All in all, 10-15 minutes of free advertising on the national airwaves and seems they had some space on the tellybox earlier in the evening. Guy is totally shameless, simple as.

Lillian announced on Thursday night that she will be back on Late Date on the 18th, will be doing Risin' Time over Christmas, and will be doing some Late Date gigs in January.

And of course the obligatory mention of the new shop as well. Wouldn't be a Fiachna show without it ;)

Another one of those crossover (in other words, saving money by not having a Late Date tonight) Radio 1/RTE Gold shows. Could've done with Lilian to ease us into Christmas Day.

    It really is ridiculous.

I agree with posters here saying that Lilian hasnt got a fair shot on Late Date.

I am unsure if it is a gender issue. Another female presenter to watch out for is Carol Moran. in my opinion she is excellent on the Weekend on One.

I heard Carol Moran a few times and I thought she was great, she has a lovely way about her and her music choices were very good.

I still miss Donal Broughan on saturday mornings, he was the best music presenter Rte ever had in my book, but I do quite like Carol, she is doing a fine job on Weekend on One alright. Still 2 of the best listening hours in the week.

Donal was great, so good that I even recorded him some of the time. I thought that there was way too little recognition of him when he died so suddenly. I was totally shocked but nobody seemed to know him.

RTE didn't even have a photo of him iirc

Indeed. I think he was a very private fella so that may have been at least partly down to personal choice. Other than that he was from Laois, had a young family and had been in a band himself, I knew and know next to nothing about him. It wasn't until after his death that I realised how loved and widely respected he was among the Irish music community.

I was similar. I was trying to find out what I could about him. Before he passed away I had just assumed he was on the ladder in RTE and would eventually become better known. A bit like I used to think would happen to Lilian and like I hope happens for Carol. However in recent years people like Fiacra seem to be shoehorned in. And this is what makes his self promotion more disgusting. I hadn't noticed it as I don't listen to him that much but, judging by the comments here, it seems to be happening.

Are any of you late date regulars looking forward to future Taoiseach Leo Varadkar hosting late date this week ?

Leo is presenting tomorrow night, (27th) I'll definitely tune in, he might surprise us. In the interest of fairness, Simon Coveney should have been given a night too :D

Joe Brolly will also be presenting over the Christmas period, now that could be a complete car crash or he might be great. Guest presenters beat pre-recorded shows anyway.

Cathal paid tribute to Donal Broughan on his programme of December 19th last. It was the fifth anniversary of Donal's passing. I thought it was a nice touch.

Joe Brolly is on right now. Playing some decent music (Kate Bush and Townes Van Zandt so far). But jesus it's like he's whispering into the mic! So low and croaky.

Nice one. Cathal, of course, took over from Donal on Weekend and wasn't too bad in fairness. He also played two for the great Joe Strummer on the 22nd so he's firmly in my good books at the moment :)

Still think Cathal is a work in progress but he's trying hard and he'll hopefully get there in the end.

I can't really take to Cathal. He's too chirpy for Late Date.

Yep, bring back sultry, mournful Alf!

Just turning on the wireless now, how is Joe Brolly doing?

Some serious nihilism from Joe at the end there!

Music has been good IMO. Bit of everything.

Good stuff before 12 midnight, then he tried to get down with the kids after the news, but he rescued the situation afterwards.

    I'm disappointed, I missed it!

I thought there was an hour left :(. I must listen to Joe Brolly on Playback, Joe Duffy is on now :(.

I've contacted the show a few times recently and Cathal emailed me back. I think he really enjoys the gig and is keen to do a decent job.

I'm surprised Joe didn't try to get a 10 hour programme out of his Legacies show this year.

I enjoyed Brolly, and the music (I thought) was very good. I could listen to him regularly. Then Joe Duffy arrived and forced me to dive for the remote.
