Did anyone see the womens 4 x 400 from the Uni champs...can anyone link it in for people to see. ( I am useless at that stuff) . You need to see the most extraordinary last leg by 100m specialist Phil Healy. I will not spoil it. Fantastic commentary as well by Cathal and Ronan ...

    That was incredible!

Wow. What do ye make the gap from first to eventual winner at end of 3rd lap. 70 to 75 metres?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭Chartsengrafs

That was amazing! The poor anchor leg UCD athlete must have felt she was going backwards.

That was amazing to watch.... I changed my mind to many times to mention in guessing who I thought would take it :D

I have to go to a track meet to view some of this racing in person, the speed seems astonishing to me :)

That was absolutely epic to watch. Seemed like that race was full of distance runners judging by the varying paces on that final leg. Why Michelle Finn was on the anchor leg I have no idea, but it looked like some craic altogether.

    Jazus, that was mad Ted!

The UCD athlete had a 30m lead, did she end up 5th?

    What's her speciality distance 50k :)

    TbL

UCD were 2:58 at 1200m and the last girl ran a 78!:eek:

    Tnx.

Tbh, I felt a little sorry for her, know feck all about sprinting but do you usually not put your fastest runner on anchor?

Every team would have a different plan. For example Joanne Cuddihy used to be the second leg for Ireland's 4x400 team, even though she was by far the fastest.

I'm guessing that girl stepped in at the last minute for somebody who dropped out, got injured, didn't show or whatever. I doubt very much she was part of the original quartet. She doesn't look like a sprinter.

That was some last lap. Great stuff

That race sort of shows you can't bluff a 400m based on being a good distance runner. Michelle Finn ran around 67, but went out like a headless chicken for the first 200. All the distance endurance in the world is no good to you when you run like that.

A friend of mine used to run the 400m, 800m and 1500m. Always said the 800 was hell, then the 400 and last was the 1500m.

Did a marathon in 2:45 and still thinks the 800m is harder:D

Also shows that when you break a collegiate record in your own event previously that day you might just have a little fatigue in your legs (especially given that she split quicker that that indoors in 2.13 for 800)

A little fatigue yeh, but we are talking about elite athletes here. They can handle that. In the end of the day she went out at a suicidal effort for the first 200 by the looks of things, probably got caught up in trying to bridge that huge lead to the UCD girl. It's no big deal. Fair play to her for doing it, and it made for an awesome race.

Know nothing about running but jesus that was just brilliant to watch...well done to the runners

    The commentary was brilliant too.

That was just...inspirational. Everything was perfect, the commentary matches the excitement, the way the winner falls over the line after giving it everything, the feeling that Finn had put in a flyer and done the unthinkable until someone outthunk her...just a great clip.

A comment on the Youtube site says she won her own race earlier in the meet and legs were knackered.

Some finish though! I didn't expect that.

Didn't she also win the National Road Relays the day after? Part of the Leevale team? Good weekend!

Oh, and what is it about women's 4x400m races. This has been my favorite for quite some time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mlU9FfSx0A

Interview with Healy in Washington Post.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/inspired-life/wp/2016/04/19/unbelievable-watch-this-irish-runners-stunning-comeback-victory/

I'd say there is well over half a million views now. I saw a video from an Italian FB page that has 80,000 views

She was just on Lunch Time on Newstalk. Said it was her first 4x4 leg! And only 20 mins after she won the 200m!

At least she had the manners to look exhausted after. :pac:

Spare a thought for Jenna Bromell. She more than likely ran the fastest split of the day. Had she been on the final leg herself and Healy would have been very close at the last changeover and it all could have worked out differently as they both try to chace down UCD. It's funny how things work out.

    Fair enough.
They must be badly titled so, as I has a scan through the first couple of pages and couldn't see an obvious thread :P

*probably a good thing I don't start many threads.....

From interviews given Phil Healy she ran a 54 400m after a 100m and 200m race. That time is top 20 irish womens overall time and close to the best Irish womens time in the last 12 months over the distance. I think she should give up the nursing lark.

To be fair relay splits are always a little fast as there is a flying start, as posed to a block start, plus that is a rough hand time. Not to take anything away from her amazing run, but I doubt very much she is at that level over 400m that you are suggesting. We can't work out her split from the video as she is out of shot when she gets the baton.

Yes, that's all true, but ...

she ran that 400 with 2 races already in her legs and she only started racing properly when she realised she was gaining on the runners ahead of her.

I do wonder what her potential over the 400 would be!

Well she is a European standard 100m runner (competed in Zurich 2014) and will probably compete in Amsterdam in both 100m and 200m. If she does the training for 400m, then I’m sure she’d have potential to be a European standard 400m runner too. But she’s not training to be a 400m runner. I reckon if she was in a race with Sinead Denny and Jenna Bromell, she’d be a good bit behind. Probably would run high 54/ low 55 from a block start right now at a guess.

This whole thing about racing properly is nonsense too. I doubt she was jogging. She was running relaxed early on which meant she had lots of gas in the tank. There's more than one way to skin a cat when it comes to 400m. Had she gone out harder in the first 200 she would have slowed more in the last 200m than she did.

Rough hand times are meaningless, and relay splits are never accurate.

The Late Late Show showing they have the finger on the pulse as ever by not getting Phil Healy on tonight......its only 1.5mn views in a week.....

On the other hand they do have as guests:
    Maura Derrane (RTE show presenter)
    Oliver Callan (RTE Show presenter);
    Mike Murphy (former RTE show presenter);
Richard Corrigan (former RTE show presenter)
    John Spillane (TG4 Show presenter).

It's odd that this story didn't make it onto RTE news on the television (as far as I'm aware) when Channel 7 in Australia fit it into their sports news, and a big free to air channel in NZ did likewise, not to mention it appearing on ESPN's sportscenter.

I must correct myself. I've done these athletes a great disservice. Michelle Finn did not run 67, but rather 61-62, and that UCD athlete did not run 78, but rather 67ish.
