Have Garmin started using aircode yet?

Garmin supports Loc8 code since 2010.

It has been reported that the full Eircode database will be in the region of 2GB in size and just to put that in perspective the full Navteq (maps& postcodes) for ALL of Europe are also approximately 2GB. If the database does indeed end up at 2GB then the vast majority of satnav devices already in use will not be able to physically fit the Eircode database and detailed maps of Ireland. So no, no SatNav supports Eircode.

Any opinions on this. Have being looking for a dashcam for a while so two birds with one stone. Could be quite big though? Reviews on Amazon are decent.

Glitch in the system blah blah waffle excuse excuse sorry etc. Not worth driving over to argue with them.. Probably sold to one of their mates. I won't lose sleep over it, but I'm a little disappointed.

Are these still relevent with maps on mobiles ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 239 ✭✭tyney

The lane assist is brilliant on foreign motorways. Some of them double up as a handsfree bluetooth car kit. No data charges to worry about. Maps on your phone eats the battery.
    I prefer a dedicated unit.

I got a call making sure I knew it was ex display. Are they powered on when they're on display?

I bought an ex display off them a while ago. Got it cheaper than any on the site too (but i was looking for a specific one, and it was just by chance one store near me had it).

They said they take them out of the box, but they're not allowed to turn them on, no. now that could have changed, since, but that's what I was told.

I have a Tom Tom sat nav & a Samsung s6. I need 5 to 8 addresses per day. The ones that Tom Tom can't find usually are on Google. Some aren't aren't on Google so I have to use the eircode site. I can get the address sent from eircode.ie to my Tom Tom device.

Also sometimes I try use Google & I have no Internet so the Tom Tom can be a life saver sometimes.

Lads, put here maps on yer phones.
    It's free and is worldwide.
I was surprised by how good it was seeing as its free.
It doesn't have lane assist but anyone that wants that,a sat nav app like Navigon, TomTom will have it.

I got the same, said it wasn't fit for sale, bits missing etc... I wonder if I should have asked to take a look at what they did have to see if I was interested or not.

I was thinking the exact same thing!

Fair enough someone who needs to go to 3 + new address's a day like a deliver man or something but the average Joe soap knows where they're going 8/9 times out of 10 and can surely google map the other 1/2 times.

Really surprised these are still being sold tbh. The market for them must have shrunk significantly in recent years with pretty much everyone owning a smart phone at this point.

Ah, to be fair, navs have a huge advantage over phones for anyone who does any kind of moving abour at all.

I do wonder how the sales go though. Even if everyone buys a nav, they seem to last forever!? I don't know anyone who has had to change one yet, to be honest.

Most older Garmin devices support SD cards so additional space can be added very cheaply.

I drive in Europe & the States quite a bit with work & absolutely wouldn't be without a dedicated Satnav. For one, it's far less fiddly than the likes of Here maps (which I use as a back up) & features like lane assist, photo-realistic junctions & the just the interface itself make life behind the wheel in unfamiliar surroundings a whole lot less stressful.

Some great prices there OP, well spotted.

Got the dreaded cancellation from Blanch. They said the units were not in a fit state as they were glued onto the display stand and the plastic is damaged. He also said it was an admin error as the display models should not have been made available to order online

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 544 ✭✭✭coffee to go

Thanks OP. Naas store happily sold me a pristine 2519 for €75. Our old one was on the way out after being slammed in the car door. Also well pleased to discover I could just copy across the old custom voice files from the dying unit to the new one and they worked grand.

I reserved the 58Lm 5" for €70, halfords rang me a hr later saying its ready for collection,
will leave it for now and think about it ,but will it come with box, charger, manuals etc...?
reason my old navman s70 cant be updated, shame cos happy enough with it.

Thanks OP. just reserved one in Naas. Coo lock had none and blanch are not honouring reservations so hopefully I can get someone to pick up for me.

That cannot be very good in the long term for the unit...still price reflects that. Thanks to poster.

    I got a 58lm in Portlaoise.

Brand spanking new, never out of the box, still with the original wrappers on.

Will save me plenty instead of renting each time with a car.

    Thanks OP.

I presume a Combined Dash Cam & SatNav is available.

Can some1 please advise if there is
& recommend a good quality Make & Model
which can be updated with maps.

    Cheers.

Cancellations happen in every Halfords bargain thread. Hard to believe it's not always the staff snapping them up.

Just picked up my 58lm from tallaght. Perfect aside from a few fingerprints on the screen.

    Thanks OP

I bought my Satnav in the States, then loaded Europe maps onto an SD card without issue. Check out eBay for maps though, as buying from Garmin directly can be pricey enough.

i ordered the nuvi 2599 from the lonford store yesterday and piced it up today,, after spending 2 hours updating it and searching endlessly for the voice command i checked the number on the back and they gave me the 2569 instead which doesnt seem to have voice command,, pain in the arse.

i hope they have a 2599 left and fix that for me.

I used to think the sun shone out of my dedicated sat navs arse, and it did, until Google Maps came along.

I do a lot of driving all around Europe, always on new routes to destinations I've never been before. My Garmin used to be absolutely essential, but now it's been downgraded to my secondary navigation device and my primary focus switched to Google Maps.

Even having to pay for the data that Google maps uses, I'd still rather that and having the knowledge I'm on the best route with other route options visible on the fly with "7 minutes faster", "12 minutes slower" tags etc, it's just too reassuring not to use. I've used both at the same time together and have instances where Garmin is suggesting a route that may be an hour longer and whatever amount of KM longer too and has been battling with Google's route I've followed for 10/15 minutes with "make a u turn when possible" commands, until finally it would agree with Google and then also display the same ETA and route time, so whatever calculations were in place at the beginning of the route obviously weren't optimal.

Google is missing a lot of features of a dedicated Sat Nav like the ability to calculate multi stop routes, a visible snail trail so you can quicker see the route you've already travelled and easy point of interest calculations. For example, I use an Esso fuel card for fuel in Europe and will always choose an Esso/Shell garage to fill up at. Garmin can calculate POI's "near current route" and you can specify fuel stations only while not interrupting your current route so it's much easier to find a convenient place to fill up with the Garmin.

Don't forget that EU DATA roaming charges are being greatly reduced at the end of the month and will be abolished next year completely so the Google data requirement shouldn't be an issue for any travel in Europe. In saying that, Garmin doesn't need any data and is of course better for areas with low or no reception in the middle of nowhere. It's all well and good saying you can download maps in advance on HERE, but when you are going to several new destinations daily and may not even know about half of them in advance, you can't really be downloading maps in advance for everything.

I still believe a dedicated unit is best for anyone on the road a lot, especially if you need to be taking calls on your phone, it's just nice to have a unit there that will be solely navigation. However, for smaller trips, especially around Dublin, it's far more convenient just to hop into the van, stick your phone in the holder and say "Ok Google, take me to X" and you're being guided 3 seconds later. I also use coordinates a lot and as the coordinates are in each job booking, which is synced to the phone via google maps, it's far easier just to copy and paste from the calendar into google maps, then having to input the coordinates on the dedicated Garmin.

If Garmin and Google teamed up, they could really make a killer device. Something that would keep maps constantly up to date and would give traffic and route suggestions, but at the same time, have all the advanced navigation and map features of a Garmin.

Something like this would be the ultimate car gadget:
    • Car Dash Cam - 1080p/wide angle lens/continuous looped recording/g-sensor/emergency clip save button/starts recording when the engine starts with no need for human interaction
    • GPS Tracker - Allows vehicle to be tracked 24/7 with a detailed history log accessible remotely and can even send a photo or small video feed. Could be done using Google Maps Timeline and Google Photos.
    • Sat Nav - Uses Google's intelligent live traffic knowledge with on the fly-in navigation slower/faster touch alternative route suggestions with full "offline" maps to reduce data usage/requirement in poorly covered areas
    • Additional Features - Low voltage protection (stops device draining car battery and will always leave enough to start engine), Low consumption mode (allows GPS tracker to still communicate and uses "parking mode" feature for dash cam, recording shocks and motion sensor).
    • Optional Accessories - Rear View Mirror Cradle - Replaces your windscreen rear-view mirror and allows a plug and play slot in connection for inconspicuous mounting while taking up minimal windscreen real estate.

In the mean time, if anyone DOES know of a more advanced MAP app that uses Google maps and has all the features and perks of Google maps, but can at the same time add a lot of other features like multi routes, snail trail, POI selection etc, please share :)
