that might just fill the bill actually, do you know how it fares reliability-wise? it being french and all..

The gearbox is Japanese... And you get 5 year warranty on Pugs. That's all I can tell you :D

In fairness the reliability has increased across the board so much that I don't find it a significant factor in choosing one brand over another any more.
Unless we are talking about complete disasters, like Mazda or Subaru diesels for instance.

Market perception is slightly different animal - and 208 will depreciate faster than Polo or Yaris, even if it is more reliable.

I'm in a 151 CC - 177 DSG. A six speed. It's utterly sweet - changes smoother than butter.... My first DSG/dual clutch. Would not go back to a regular slushbox. I recently drove the Jag XE with the same 8 speed ZF box BMW use and I swear it was awful. You'd have to drive it in sport to not want you to take it out back and shoot it....

It looks like the DSG 6 speed offering limits choice a bit on VAG cars, for instance they don't seem to offer DSG at all on a 3 door highline, you gotta go for a 5 door. Also on the Polo Blue GT the only offering is the 7 speed DSG.

How much of a difference is there between the 6 and 7 speed? And is the 6 speed only offered on the top end VAG car offerings?

As described before, the DSG6 is offered only with 2.0TDI and 2.0TSI engines. Anything smaller gets the DSG7.

Sorry my question is more along the lines of why is the 1.6TDI the biggest engine you can get in a 3 door Highline Golf when you can get the 2.0TDI in the 5 door.

The 2006+ ? It would seem it uses an GA6F21WA transmission - it is an Aisin transmission from TF-80SC/AF21 family.

It is grand box, used even on much bigger cars, like Volvo XC90 or Ford S-Max (in 2009 replaced by Powershift). But it had its issues at the beginning when it was released - the mechatronics unit was updated numerous times in 2006 and 2007 before they sorted it out.

What you need to really avoid with Mini is the 1st generation Mini (2000+) with CVT transmission. IIRC it is the same ZF CFT23 box Ford put in C-max with 1.6 Duratorq and 1.8 Duratec engines. Unreliable and very expensive to fix, as nobody made spares for it.
