Hey just looking for a bit of inspiration, what was or will be your first dance song? I'm trying to pin down a song- we have a band with two guys in it with guitars and they will learn a song and sing it acoustic for us. I HATE dancing!!!😂

We had If I should fall behind, Bruce Springstein
Heard on Ian Dempsey talking on today Fm this morning about Absolute Beginners- David Bowie as a 1st dance tune, that would have been class!

If you don't have a song that is special to you both, or even a song that's special to one of you then I would pick something that will be easy for you to shuffle around to for 4 minutes. Have I told you lately that I love you by rod Stewart should make everyone feel warm and squishy inside

I'm having Oasis- Stop Crying Your Heart Out. I don't have a bride yet, mind you, but she'll have to accept it. Or else pay for the band herself.

Someone like you by Van Morrison is very nice too
Read the lyrics of any song you pick first
Some songs sound romantic but they're actually far from it
    Avoid Halelujia for example

I had Van Morrison 'some one like you' as my first dance i really liked it but i really wanted 'Lonestar Amazed' love that song however my band couldn't do it at the last minute. I was gutted it is a very romantic song.

Peter Gabriel, the book of love.

Have a listen to all of the words. It's beautiful and very fitting. That will either be the song I walk down the aisle to or our first dance.

I had Patience by Guns N' Roses. I wanted Used to Love Her (But I Had to Kill Her) (also Guns N' Roses) but the wife didn't agree.

I have said this before and I will say it again. First dance doesn't have to be I love you you love me etc!!!

For instance, my wedding tonight the couple are going with Love Inc - Superstar!!!!

That's their song and their choice!

What was playing on the radio before you went on your first date? Or the first kiss, maybe it's that big song from your first holiday.

Songs have different meanings to everybody. For instance I've play the Ellie Goulding version of how long will I love you as a first dance but I've also carried a coffin to that song.

It's easy to shuffle around too but it's a bit too morose tbh for me in that it's about Claptons chronic alcoholism

The last 3 weddings I have been to didn't have romantic-worded songs, they were songs that meant something to the couples. The last one I went to had a kings of leon song as that was the topic of conversation which brought the couple together on the night they met! Another wedding had "Happy Together" by the Turtles. Can't remember the last one but I remember thinking at the time of it playing that it was an unusual choice but worked well for the couple.

Or "Some girls are bigger than others" either. Includes the line "Some girls mothers are bigger then other girls mothers" . Legend.

    I HATE dancing!!!😂

If you hate dancing would you not just skip the first dance? We didn't do one at our wedding. I really like dancing, but I find that awkward shuffle in front of everyone that most first dances are painfully cringey, so we didn't bother with it!

We had For once in my life by Stevie Wonder

Instead of first dance do something that means something to you. First drink, flash mob, bouncy castle, game of rounders or football. Duel if your into martial arts. Rock band or some other fun game on a big screen. What is important to you?

If you don't like dancing or have no real interest in music it won't mean anything.

Please no flash mobs or "surprise" dance routines. Please. People are getting ulcers from cringing.

A few weddings I've been to have had the bride and groom being the only one on the dance floor for the first 30 seconds/ minute or so of the first dance, then inviting everyone to join them. It was a nice way for there to still be a chance for people to get a photo of the first dance, but didn't have them doing the awkward revolving shuffle for 4 minutes alone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,131 ✭✭✭RentDayBlues

We had that's amore, it suited us and wasn't too serious. Only danced for 1 minute before bridal party joined us

I have to say this is the first time I have been ever asked for this as a first dance but it went down really well proving it doesn't always have to be a love song.

    Great song, great choice.

I also like Let's Stay Together by All Green, Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darrin, and although it's a bit overdone, The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra.

I had MOYA (MAIRE) BRENNAN & SHANE McGOWAN - You're the One. Great song for a poor dancer - slow bit at the start is very short! Great song - pity about the movie

We could definitely do this either

Totally agree if you dont like dancing or just even the thought of it dont do it.. We had whenever i see you smiling face - James Taylor and while we had a bit of a laugh people were just standing around staring at us it was just very weird... We were like come on come out and dance but nope...

Not doing the first dance leaves you free maybe to get everyone out on the dance floor, get the band to say things are swopped all the guests are going to do the first dance for the bride and groom.. It would get everyone out...

God's Plan by Derek Ryan is a nice song.

My friend had You've Got a Friend in me from Toy Story for the first dance at her wedding. It was really lovely and it's less than two minutes long so no need to be shuffling around for ages.

Tom Baxter, Better is also a lovely choice.

Christina Perry A Thousand Years is quite a popular wedding song but a bit of a sob fest.

We're still deciding what our first dance song will be, we're leaning towards a Pearl Jam song at the moment.

Future Days :) Just Breathe is a possibility too though, both beautiful songs!

Agreed and would make me cringe too. But its equally awful to see dozens of people keep trying to get a couple do a dance by suggesting songs when they have stated they don't want to.

Its not a legally important part of a wedding and its surprising more people don't suggest alternatives or simply say don't do it!

They can miss it out and no one would be bothered or use it as an opportunity to do a quick quirky fun expression of a first that means something to them.

I don't think anyone is trying to get the couple to do a dance, the OP asked what people had or will have as their first dance song and people are responding and giving different options.

It's not like they have to listen to what some randomers on an internet forum say.

Our music choices are completely in my hands. The first dance song is pretty much 99% set in stone. At the moment I'm thinking of different songs for the bridal party to walk to and I'd like a collection of songs playing while the guests are getting comfortable and awaiting our arrival :D

My now wife walked up the aisle to Yellowbedbetter and our first dance was Black. I know Black is a strange choice and about love lost but it's kinda our song and it was the song the band were playing live when I purposed to her during their gig in Belfast 2010
