Home wifi router that can filter https pages

    Hi

I am wondering if there is a wifi router that would filter (block) content on https pages

I have a netgear wgr614v9 - I can log in to this router and enter a keyword in its Block Sites section

If I then try to browse to a page that has that word on it the page will be blocked but only if the URL is http

If the URL is https then the router cannot block the page

For example, if I block the word youtube and then search boards.ie for youtube the search results page is blocked as it contains the word

However, I can still browse to "https : // www . youtube . com" as it is https

In terms of youtube I would hope to be able to block pages that contain specific words, such as the youtuber's channel name

I am trying to find out if there is a wifi router that can block and it has to be wifi because the kids connect their devices to the wifi

I have considered opendns and others like it but would prefer to be able to filter the content myself

Any suggestions would be great, thanks

    Patrick

There probably is a way to block those secure sites on your router, but I'm not going to tell you as I'd be afraid that if you did you won't be able to undo it when you realise the enormity of the mistake you will have made.

Blocking HTTPS sites is just going to make good (i.e useful) parts of the internet unusable for you. Google, Facebook, GMail, etc. It is not the way to achieve what you want.

If you don't want to use OpenDNS, then get a parental control package that will give you the control you want.

You think you do, you don't. You really really don't. Companies get paid thousands of euros per year to maintain keyword lists as its a humongous effort.

HSTS is preventing you doing anything here, if you want to do HTTPS transparent proxying then you'll need about €1000+ worth of equipment and to install a certificate in every device that connects.

You can't block a HTTPS page based on the content. That's the entire point of HTTPS, people/machines between your computer and the server can't see the content. There are methods, but as above, they're expensive and difficult

Boardsie Enhancement Suite - a browser extension to make using Boards on desktop a better experience (includes full-width display, keyboard shortcuts, dark mode, and more). Now available through your browser's extension store.

    Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/addon/boardsie-enhancement-suite/

    Chrome/Edge/Opera: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/boardsie-enhancement-suit/bbgnmnfagihoohjkofdnofcfmkpdmmce

Thanks very much for the replies, much appreciated

I had a feeling that hardware would be too pricey for me but it was worth an ask

I understand the point of https alright, just in the case of youtube there is a lot of stuff on it that is not suitable for the nippers at the age they are. Having said that I've nipped it in the bud and talked to the most curious one and he gets the point now (also I can monitor their history from the PC so its not so bad)

I will look into software options now, and will start with OpenDNS as it is easy to get going with

Thanks again. You know, I have my little router here and thought maybe there was a chance something was available that I could use, so, much appreciated that you have cleared it up for me

    Best regards

    Patrick

Get Symantic Norton 2016 antivirus (not the bloated 360 package), it comes with a free subscription to family shield which gives you full control of the sites they visit. You'll get a serial on eBay for less than 15 quid

    Thanks for the info

I wonder if it will filter content on a page

For example, i don't want to block youtube completely, but just some of the channels

Now, i might be looking for too much, but my existing router will block a page if it contains a keyword i specify (but only http)

So I wonder if I make a youtuber's channel name a keyword would Symantec block just those pages that contain that word?

It could, but would be over zealous. Say you ban Pewdiepie, but allow them to look at minecraft videos. When they open a minecraft video it will often suggest pewdiepie and thus block that page even though that pages content is just fine.

Thanks ED, that's good to know - pewdiepie is not the worst of them, there are others that are worse out there - and if they miss out on a few minecraft videos its not too bad

Anyway, i've installed norton security trial and norton family trial but just cant see where I can add a keyword to filter :( - family lets me enter a url to block and security lets me turn things on or off

    The search goes on :D
