New RTE program, they seem to be promoting it heavily. Hopefully they can get it right. Anyone going to tune in for the week?

3 mins in and I'm already disappointed. Bring back this farming life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,316 ✭✭✭tanko

3 mins was too long, Aine Lawlor and Mairead Farrell, two of the most annoying women in ireland. This farming life must be finished unfortunately, I'm off to clean out the calving pens.

I'm loving it so far. I adore lambs :D

Wish I could agree with ya it reminds me of an episode of Tractor Ted so far.

I do find it very rushed but I do think for us people who don't live on a farm it's nice to see farm life :) I'm surrounded by farms and I love animals :)

Your man doing the voice over for the robot milker sound like one of those guys off the engineering videos we were shown in school. Almost patronising

Jesus wept. It's not often I'd turn off anything that's on in the background but I put that off here just before the break.
Coming across as something you'd show to kids imo.

Some load of rubbish why didn't they do one day on a sucler farm one on dairy one at horses and so on for the week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 373 ✭✭snipey

    it's painful to watch,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,224 ✭✭✭✭whelan2

How are they going to do this for a whole week:eek:

Is it aimed more so for the average viewer ?? Instead of the farmers. They make farming out to be this rosey job with very little hardship

    Is rare breed finished now?

    That's exactly what I thought!

This is farcical ..on about badgers on farms, what about all the farmers livelihood s destroyed by these vermin??! This is infuriating

    That's exactly what I thought!

Unless tomorrows episode starts a lot better, the ratings will drop to ****e I reckon. When you watched This Farming Life or Rare Breed, you could see and hear the passion and grá the people had for the business they're in, the panic when something went wrong and the disappointment of selling cheap or losing animals. Not yappy presenters in the way taking over the show taking the rawness out of it.

How did Mairead Farrell manage to get a job presenting a farm show , I'd say she is a dirty devil !

Yep, exactly. Watching This Farming Life last night and they showed a dead calf they found when they went out in the morning. I don't think they'll be showing the likes on The RTE programme.

If you're going to try and copy Springwatch, probably a good idea to get presenters who are actually qualified and are experts in their field. Lawlor was embarrassing, Farrell is terrible but at least she wasn't pretending to know what she was talking about.

Just watching it now on +1

see rangler1 lurking in the background, looking well

    Cringe TV :o
I watched it all and the only interesting bits was the lad from Donegal beating the world record, the cow kicking the robot and the plastic clamps for the sows. Years ago you used to sit backwards on them when inseminating them and their grunts would be mighty :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 209 ✭✭jmrc

Far too rushed.... And what in the name of jays us is the renta crowd for?

If they keep that pace up for the week...you would be dizzy looking at it..... Rte juniors have better segments.....

Tell ye what we'll done Ivan Scott..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,495 ✭✭✭KatW4

Oh God I thought it was the funniest thing I've ever seen!!! I'm a townie but live on a farm now. I liked it :D so did my boyfriend and his dad, who are farmers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 397 ✭✭AnFeirmeoir

Utter crap . Embarrassing . Unbelievable that rte could make such a balls of an effort .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,891 ✭✭✭Bullocks

I wouldn't say its bad , its a step in the right direction for rte anyhow . They should think about swopping Darragh out and replacing him with the Fagan lad

Now, that is a good idea, Darragh seemed nervous on live tv, tbh so did Ella too, but Fagan seemed more at home on it considering he is fairly new to it and there is a shower of strangers on his farm.

itd be nice to have an actual farmer involved in the production(if they want to retain their farming audience)
i only caught the end of it so not sure what i think of it

You know I said a while ago how kids should have tours on farms to see what they're like. This is what this show is - a televised school tour. A show for kids.
    Pity.

Ivan Scott was the best bit.:pac:

Darragh looked neither like a farmer nor presenter ,I'd say Fagan could do both and a bit more at his ease . Ella just makes the townies feel at ease watching a ruralish show .

    ,

God, you were quick, they promised that the cameras wouldn't be that side, was with David Clarke, cattle exporter, and niall mc gauran that sold that robot, so had an interesting evening.........I thought john did well.
Material was a bit light alright, but it's not really targetted at farmers
Even ETTG is able to get over 400000 viewers
Ivan made two more attempts at the record after.....did the first one in 34secs but there was less than 3kgs in the fleece second one in 38 secs and again there was less tham 3kgs

Thought the Ewe that he made first and successful attempt with had very scraggy/dirty looking wool which would be hard sheared...he did tremendously well if that was the case.
Would those ewes have been housed?

    Watching it on player.
Ah, I wouldn't be very critical. The key points made here that are true I would see are, too many disparate items in the one show and the sort of rushed up beat presentation.
I think an awful lot of television producers think this is the way to try and hold young peoples attention. But that underestimates your audience.
Look at Counryfile put on by BBC 1 at prime time on Sunday evening. There is a huge potential audience, who are really interested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 335 ✭✭ihatewinter

The concept idea was good but as usual RTE failed miserably. It was horrendous and was aimed at the townies. You think they would do some segments like soil nutrients or tractor rules. Something different instead of the same drivel with hyper presenters who haven't a clue about farming. Darragh looked ot of his depth with the pigs, useless as a presenter and farm expert.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,808 ✭✭✭✭Water John

Well, lets see how it plays out over the week. Will be hard to get to view it, an hour, even on player, each night.

A live show, even with built in prerecorded segments, is tricky and nerve wracking for those making it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,538 ✭✭✭J.O. Farmer

I thought it was good for what it was meant to be. It's meant to be a light entertainment programme with segments to let people who don't know anything about farming see a range of things.
If you want an in depth discussion on the best way to do something on the farm go for a pint with the neighbour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 594 ✭✭✭fanadman1

After watching this farming life it was very disapointing. I would like to see john gave more of a free run. He occonisaly writes in the farming indo and seems to be very amart and knows his stuff

Yeah, he is a natural. They are hard to find. Cool, even on live TV.
Really pushed Mairead in that final segment. Like any farmer trying to pen cattle, knew when to, up a gear.

I didn't watch it, but after all yer comments I have to have a look and see how bad it is now. I think what might be killing it is we all watched bbc farming live last week and have high expectations.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Big-shot farmer. Brother in law of one of Ireland's richest farmers (or his daughter). His father is a vet. Not remotely representative of real Irish farming.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 794 ✭✭✭TheHillOfDoom

I may or may not have grown up on a farm 4 miles away.

    Who are you talking about?

And what difference does it make, who his brother in law is?

Your post smacks of begrudgery to be honest...

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 794 ✭✭✭TheHillOfDoom

Begrudgery it may be. But that programme is not representative of Irish farming.

Had to turn away after 5-10 min.s when I got the gist of what was going on. Nervous presenters, rushed and chopped segments and farming baby-talk. Lambs come from sheeps, seaweed come from the sea etc.
