Windows 10 - Back-up warning. Faulty drive...

My Windows 10 machine has three drives.

One is for anything OS/Windows 10 and the other two are strictly for digital image files, nothing else.

Earlier today, I got a warning about a faulty drive - don't know which one - and that I should perform a back-up.

This is now in progress. It is being backed-up to an external drive via USB 2.0.

    1. It has been stuck on 13% for almost 2 hours. Why might this be? Is it going to take hours?
    2. How can I confirm which drive is the faulty one (if any) and attempt to fix it?
    3. Anything else I should be doing?

    Thanks.

    D.

Acronis Drive Monitor is a useful free utility that will let you see the SMART data for each drive in your system and identify the drive that has faults.

If you're stuck at a given percentage I would guess possibly a physical issue causing a failure to read a sector which is holding up the backup. If it's a physical failure in the drive the key is to minimise unnecessary reads to the disk and back up data, preferably in order of priority.

    Thanks.

Looks like that drive is indeed screwed.

Have always backed it up, so only have to have it replaced. Phew!

Acronis is a neat little app.

    Thanks again.

Ps. I will replace it with a SSD. Any advice on choice/brand etc?

For the record, the failed drive is one of these:

Personally I wouldn't yet trust 2TB SSDs; there aren't that many on the market that I know of and I think the Samsung ones out there are using the three-voltage-levels approach to increase storage density (which may well be very reliable now, but was a bit flaky when I first read about it a few years back). Crucial and Sandisk would likely be my preferred brands; Intel's Enterprise-class SSDs are technically great but very pricey.

    Thanks for the reply.

I can have one of these fitted, all in, for €160.
