Just heard on RTE news there that Kilmainham Jail have a new online booking system and website launching tomorrow and that they'll be giving away free tours to the first 5,000 people who apply.

I've no other details and the only official site here http://www.heritageireland.ie/en/dublin/kilmainhamgaol/ doesn't give detail either.

Tomorrow morning should reveal all. I'm going to apply seeing as I've always moaned at having to pay the OPW €10 for sites like Kilmainham and Newgrange when they used to be free for everyone. That was until the OPW decided to cash in on the tourist dollar back during the Celtic Tiger. By charging foreign tourists they had to also charge Irish people too.

OPW sites are free entry on the first Wednesday every month as far as I know op, dunno if that suits you but just in case..

Yeah it's free to get in but then there's no escape... Clever plan.

    Where do I book online?

according to the website on the ops link "Tickets are sold on a first come first served basis and cannot be booked in advance." This would imply there is no online booking facility unless they are launching one as part of the redevelopment which is unlikely.

actually you can book online here although I havent loaded the page as the website is very sloooow. May only be for the tours rather than for entry.

    Site being hammered it seems

It's about time they brought in advance tickets for the Gaol though, queues are ridiculous there some days

Picked a day, picked a time, right enough they show up as "Commemorations tickets" at €0. Selected number of tickets but when I click next I get "Unable to communicate with the site"

    Edit: Booked, thanks OP!

Did you just wait for the page to load?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,209 ✭✭✭maximoose

Yep, it's very slow but loads eventually. Picking the tickets took a few tries, getting the "Unable to communicate with the site" each time but after about 10 goes it brought me through to personal/billing details and completed.

Site has just gone down altogether I think.

    Cheers OP.

Anybody else have trouble printing from their site? I had to take a screenshot, paste to word and print from there. Hopefully its the same barcode on all 4 tickets.

    EDIT...Didn't get past May

Haha that's gas, because when I went to the Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico, it was free for Mexicans but not tourists. Irish places will always try to cash in ;) I wanna learn our history for free!! :D

Well that was f***ing painful....took about 20 minutes but managed to get tickets booked for late next month.

Thanks OP for the heads up though.

Unbelievably slowwww :eek:but just had it open in another tab and kept coming back to it. Still lots of dates/times left.
    Thanks again OP.

Site was slow but got 4 for Saturday.

Thank OP. Got 4 tickets for end of April.
Site is very slow still - but persevere. Took ages for barcodes on tickets to appear, but will probably be easier at another time with link from e-mail when every one is not trying to access it at the same time. ( also found the e-mail in the spam folder )

I was there back in 2003 and iirc it was free then- the Mexicans must have decided to cash in. I remember being at Persepois in Iran where the ticket entry was $1.50. I produced a student card and the price dropped to 15c! I felt guilty after that one! Vietnam and China have to be the worst for over charging tourists- huge signs at sites tell you that you're paying 10x or even 20x what the locals pay.

I suppose €10 for Newgrange or Kilmainham isn't that bad. But it can just be annoying as we're already funding these places through general taxation. At a minimum kids should go free to these places that are important Irish heritage sites IMO

Anyway just got four free tickets, I only need two but I'll give away the other two freebies as a random act of kindness to a couple of strangers on the day.

Enjoy your day out everyone :D

It'd be unusual if they all had the same barcode.
Check and see if there's a 12 or 13 digit number next to the barcode and compare that with the other tickets.

Looks to me that bar codes are not the same.

I just printed mine and the bar codes on all 4 look identical.

It also has your 4 digit booking ref, which is also the same on all 4 tickets.
