We invented copyright as the rights holders will keep telling you.

But they don't mention the 3,000 people killed in the ensuing Battle of Cúl Dreimhne which overturned the decision.

What a fantastic little snippet of history, I hadn't heard of this before now. Thanks.

I highly doubt that, for one ford invented mass production of Automobiles.

Ford in its day was the biggest most efficient producer of cars in the world and the first to use assembley line methods.

    From the ford website:
Over 160 years ago, Henry Ford’s grandfather, John, and father, William, left their Irish homeland in search of prosperity in the ‘New World.’

Never in their wildest dreams could they have imagined that William’s eldest son would grow up to establish one of the greatest business empires in the world. Henry Ford’s inventions and production methods were to change the lives of millions and the effects of his genius would be felt all over the world.

There is a car sculpture honouring him in Cork.

What was that copyright phrase? To each cow its calf, I think is part of it.

It wasn't claimed that Ford invented the ICE or the frame. He did create the production line and on that the first mass produced car, the Model T.
    As per Mary above.

I think I mentioned Boyle on passing but his Laws are key foundations in physics. Cork Abu.

I highly doubt that, for one ford invented mass production of Automobiles. The Automobile frame it will have been somewhere else. I highly doubt Ireland due to inventions of automobiles with internal combustion engines elsewhere.

The assembly line was developed by ford which moved the car around the factory to different location to do different jobs to it

It's a system still in use today...it revolutionised making cars and make them a lot more affordable at the time

Not really an invention but Duty Free started in Shannon.

That's where Irish coffee was invented too!

Sorry will make it a little clearer, I meant the car frame I.E the chassis. I outlined he invented the modern Automobile mass production line. I was specifically talking about the frame/Chassis. As internal combustion engine cars had been around for a while.

Co. Down man Harry Ferguson was responsible for the original Ferguson System of tractor. It was patented by him in 1926 and is the same basic design for a modern tractor that is used today.

His name lives on in the Massey Ferguson company

Also I think Dunlop who invented pneumatic tyres may have been from the North too?

He was Scottish, a vet actually. Then he moved to NI and that's where he came up with the idea for pneumatic tyres, for his child's tricycle :)

Please read the full thread. No point in reiteration.
Point is, add someone new or idea.

An old lecturer of mine Tony Scot helped invent the household smoke alarm.

Irish Copyright: To each cow its calf, to each book its copy.

Did northern Ireland exist at the time?

I remember being on a UCD open day back in (I presume) 1996/97, and we were given a talk about engineering by someone who had worked on designing the Pringles shape.

So maybe we invented Pringles as well as Taytos?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,288 ✭✭✭✭Water John

    Ha, Pringles shape, that's good.
Things you did not even know had to be invented are a brilliant category of their own.

Cream Cracker was also invented in Waterford. Those Quakers were fairly entrepreneurial back in the day

Did northern Ireland exist at the time?

It existed in the same sense that Ireland existed? The northern part of the island of Ireland, which was under British rule at the time. If you want me to be more specific.

Did northern Ireland exist at the time?

    Don't start that here.
Just look at the date and draw on basic history and take a wee guess. :roll eyes:

Edit: Just seen this on twitter, not 100% its true

    A reminder

But the most negative thing we've come up with is the electron.

Another lecturer of mine invented Clustal, a computer program that aligns genetic sequences allowing you to compare genomes. He's in the top 5 most cited scientists of all time.

Pretty sure we invented the hangover

Pretty sure we invented the hangover

Don't know if we invented it but we sure as hell perfected it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,288 ✭✭✭✭Water John

Ah, we are still valiantly trying to perfect it. That is why we keep repeating the experiment.

John Stewart Bell -Created Bell's Theorem - An important Theorem in Quantum Physics.

William Thomson - Lord Kelvin - Born in Belfast - Absolute temperatures are stated in units of kelvin in his honour. While the existence of a lower limit to temperature (absolute zero) was known prior to his work, Lord Kelvin is widely known for determining its correct value as approximately −273.15 degree Celsius or −459.67 degree Fahrenheit.
