WITH THE 1ST PICK OF THE NFL DRAFT THE TENNESSEE TITANS SELECT

    tennessee-titans.png

    Laremy Tunsil, OT, Mississippi

    495323538.jpg

When you have a QB everybody always wants you to trade back with the first pick and gain 'more value' in the draft. I'm not sure you can make a deal like that when you have the option of selecting Laremy Tunsil. He's a better prospect than Joeckel, Fisher and Matthews IMO and The Titans have to upgrade their pass protection. They finished last in the league with sacks allowed - 37 and had the 5th worst pass blocking efficeincy in the league. He's got extremely quick feet and wins nearly all of his battles. 5 hurries in 235 snaps is pretty awesome efficiency too since he returned in week 8. He was responsible for 2 sacks in his 28 games. I think the Titans would be crazy not to grab him. Potentially an All-Pro tackle.

WITH THE SECOND PICK IN THE NFL DRAFT, THE CLEVELAND BROWNS SELECT.....

    hi-res-b7422fa45d9425b13b847c7535691c5c_crop_north.jpg?w=630&h=420&q=75

    JALEN RAMSEY, DB, FLORIDA STATE!!!

Toyed around with this pick for a long time. Up until yesterday I would have taken Wentz, the best QB in this draft imo. But with the signing of RGIII I think Browns use this pick to begin strengthening other positions, and where better to start than this athletic freak? Probably the best overall player in this class, he will be a day 1 starter as the Browns begin to build an intimidating secondary.

With the 3rd pick of the NFL Draft the San Diego Chargers select

    San-Diego-Chargers-Logo.jpg

    Joey Bosa DE Ohio State

    joey-bosa-breaking-through-line-bf40c8294940b0f7.jpg

There will probably be some Chargers fans unhappy with this pick. A lot of Bolts writers have floated the idea of Bosa but wonder if he can fit in a 3-4 scheme having only played in a 4-3 front. But as GM Tom Telesco has explained:

“There are just different schemes to a 3-4. We don’t get caught up on a 3-4 or 4-3. It is how you align. We’re a 3-4 on paper, but we line up a lot like a 4-3 does."

What Bosa brings to the Chargers is versatility and an aggressive pass rush, and they need both right now. You can expect him to move around a little within the scheme, but what he'll do all day is brush off offensive tackles.

I had considered picking DeForest Buckner here as well. But to be honest I wanted to pick someone I was familiar with even to a limited extent, so having watched Ohio State play a bit this year, I felt comfortable with this guy who many have projected as a first pick overall.

Ok guys have this all written up on the laptop at home but in the interest of keeping things moving I'll post my pick and edit my reasoning when im home from work.

With the 4th pick of the NFL draft, the Dallas Cowboys pick

Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State.

With the top De and CB gone i think the cowboys will actually trade back here. But here we are in a defence heavey draft class and dallas are on the board at 4. (Will do a proper write up later)

WITH THE FIFTH PICK IN THE NFL DRAFT, THE JACKOSNVILLE JAGUARS SELECT.....

    1408642826001-XXX-MYLES-JACK253-66581694.JPG

    MYLES JACK, OLB, UCLA BRUINS!!!

Relatively straight forward choice here for the Jaguars. Despite their defensive additions they need a guy like Jack who can play several roles for them on defense. He looked great at his pro day and eased fears over the knee injury which ended his season. His athleticism and explosiveness will mean the Jags will look to him to make big plays straight away and is potentially the best pick in this draft class. The ability to play as a running back is another string to his bow and this might tempt the cowboys to take a look at him at #4.

With the 6th pick in the Ðraft the Baltimore Ravens select

DeForest Buckner - DE - Oregon

So this came down to a straight forward pick between Buckner & Staley. Sorry to disappoint some but Vernon Hargreaves was not under consideration at all here. To be a DB worth a top 5 pick you need to be Patrick Peterson or Jalen Ramsey, Hargreaves is no where near that level as a prospect.

Staley would have made sense at a big position of need but Buckner is a superior prospect at another position of need (only Ramsey is a better prospect IMO)

Buckner is an absolutely massive human being, with very good athleticism for his size. Does not have elite first step speed (hard to expect from someone who is 6ft 7) but that aside he lacks very little. Has improved as a pass rusher from 2014 to 2015. Very strong at the point of attack, capable of handling double teams and has pass rush ability. Needs to stay focused on staying low as can get in a bit of trouble if people get under his pads.

Ideally suits to play end on a 3-4 defense but hard to not find a spot for him on any formation. You will hear him constantly being referred to as a similar player to Calais Campbell, that is a very good comparison but think this guy won't end up being underrated.

with the seventh pick in the boards draft the 49ers select images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTljiATkXBbGQPEJvPs3cej4-OqhB4gG1UtvC_XiaQ9O9GP84VhQB Jared Goff california-quarterback-jared-goff.jpg?w=650

The 49ers have many needs this draft and in Goff the 49ers get the number one QB in this draft, who has lots of upside for the long term future of the franchise as they rebuild, Goff is a scheme fit for new Head Coach Chip Kellys offence as he can move the ball with short and medium throws into very tight windows with ease with his quick release, he can also make plays on his feet when needed as he is an athletic QB with speed, he is able to make full field reads from the pocket, Goff reminds me of Aaron Rodgers as imo he has similar skill set, Goff could be a top level starter for the next decade with the 49ers,

other players considered not selected yet where, OT Stanley, WR Treadwell, WR Coleman, WR Doctson, LB Ragland, LB Floyd, LB Lee, DLINE Lawson, DLINE Robinson, DLINE Reed, DLINE Dodd, Billings, RB Elliott, DB Hargreaves, I also had considered, Jack, Bunckner, Wentz,

With the 8th pick of the Boards 2016 mock draft the Philadelphia Eagles select Ezekiel Elliott, running back, Ohio State.
    osufoot13-02.jpg

I think the Eagles are in an awkward position here and like many teams in the top 10 would like to trade back. The top players available don’t really match their positions of need.
The O-line needs work but I consider Lane Johnson as the future LT and don’t rate Stanley so I think RT is an area that can be filled later in the draft by them.
If Buckner was there I would have taken him, I think he’d be a very strong presence along that Dline, take some pressure off Cox and give the Eagle a bit of security if they couldn’t get a long term deal done with Cox.
I also considered taking Hargreaves as picking in the top10 means you want an impact player and I think Hargreaves shows the potential to be a shut down corner.

But in the end I went with Elliott. I’m not a fan of drafting a RB so early and I don’t think he’s as good as Gurley was last year but he fills a need and is an outstanding player. One of the big question marks the Eagles have is at QB so establishing a strong running game should take the pressure off Bradford.
The Eagles already have Ryan Mathews on the roster who has been a solid if underwhelming player but pairing him with Elliott should provide them with a very good duo.

Elliott is the best running back in this draft and not just a good physical specimen but has shown a good understanding of the position. He is passionate about the game which can only be good to have in a locker room. While not the best value at pick n.8 he’s the best option.

With the 9th selection of the 2016 boards.ie NFL Draft

    icon175x175.jpeg

    The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select

Vernon Hargreaves III - Cornerback out of Florida

    Hargreaves-feat.jpg

Tampa have one of the worst secondary's in football, and while adding Grimes, to Verner and Banks from last year, they still need a flashy playmaker at the cornerback position.

If Buckner or Bosa fell to 9, I would have gone DE here but VH3 will make this team better from day 1. He does everything, he tackles, he deflects passes and he intercepts.

At 5'10, his height against big receivers in the Division like Julio Jones and Kelvin Benjamin is a concern, but on tape he looks spectacular. He has brilliant footwork and looks good in press and man coverage. He's aggressive and has a swagger about him that all top CB's need to have.

    Ronnie Stanley-Tackle-Notre Dame

    0ap3000000435970.jpg

The decision came down to three here- Ragland, Treadwell and Stanley. With the secondary options worthy of the 10 pick gone I went for Stanley with back to back first round tackles set as book-ends for the line.

Clearly an inferior athlete to Tunsil,Stanley still looks the goods as a franchise tackle. Mobile, durable with a stellar work ethic Stanley has great composure and has had his hand placement commended in all accounts of his.

This pick leaves the Giant's offence in great stead after a monstrous free agency plunge on D and should help capitalise on the wind-down of Eli's career.

With the 11th pick in the 2016 draft, the Chicago Bears take Shaq Lawson, DE, Clemson.
    AR-160109744.jpg&maxw=800&q=90?ver=201601041420

    While the Bears have done really well in free agency, they need some bolstering on defense. Finishing 2015 with 12.5 sacks and 25.5 tackles for loss, and being so versatile I think he's a solid pick. He'll be good at the offset, but will develop even more in a couple of years. He's explosive, and as the NFL draft profile say;
Very powerful at the point of attack. Able to punch, extend arms and control the line of scrimmage or set a hard edge. Able to shock and shed blockers and has the hand quickness to staggered block attempts. Power allows him to play on other side of the line.

The Saints take their choice of best wide reciever in the draft to help alongside Cooks giving them excellent options in attack. DT is a big need temporarly sorted with Fairley. Defence is an issue for the Saints but its a great draft for defensive players so plenty to get later on. I can see the Saints moving back for a couple of extra picks which they will use on D.

With the 13th pick of the 2016 draft the Miami Dolphins select Darren Lee

    abe626ee6cb16311d4313691bb53bed7-original.jpg

Miami have glaring needs in a lot of positions, CB, RB and to get younger at DE. But I have gone linebacker as they are using free agency to get depth for RB and CB and are still going to get quality in these positions in following rounds i think.

Gase has said that Kiko Alonso will play ILB so someone on the outside is needed. Lee is extremely athletic, he ran the fastest 40 for a linebacker in the combine since 2007. Eats up ground on blitzes and is good in coverage, so is a genuine 3 down guy. Could be used a lot for blitzing with Suh opening gaps as his speed will cause most teams problems

Size has been raised as an issue, he is a much smaller physical prospect to someone like Ragland but should be able to bulk up a bit, and his mobility and versatility are his greatest strengths. His college stats are actually better than the more fancied Myles Jack although he was on a much better team.

With the 14th pick of the NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select Reggie Ragland, ILB, Alabama.

    RaglandReggie.jpg

Oakland addressed cornerback and OLB in free agency, but still need to strengthen their middle linebacker core, which makes Ragland an ideal fit. Ragland looks like a three-down starter and a difference-maker. From watching him this season, he has come across as a very physical linebacker who is capable of taking on shedding blocks from the OL as well as being a hard-hitter. He has a strong ability to read plays and takes good angles to get to ball-carriers. He also showed some ability to blitz off the corner as well which should be fun for Oaklands DC to plan for with Mack also in the team.

I was tempted to go with Jaylon Smith here as I view him as the best player in the draft but its too risky a pick so early on for a young team still rebuilding. Safety and the OL should be addressed in rounds 2 and 3.

The Los Angeles Rams are now on the clock.

WITH THE 15TH PICK OF THE NFL DRAFT THE LOS ANGELES RAMS SELECT

    corey-coleman-tds2.jpg

Corey Coleman - Wide Receiver - Baylor.

The way this draft has fallen leads to the Rams to desperately seek a trade back. There is no wide receiver or corner back that is clearly ahead of the others and worthy of this spot. Pick 15 is also considered too rich to reach for Paxton Lynch.

Alabama center Ryan Kelly is given strong consideration but, partly due to this being the first pick since relocation and therefore looking to generate some buzz, the Rams decide to go for Corey Coleman in the hope of finally finding a WR1.

Coleman lacks ideal size but is extremely explosive and produces big plays on a regular basis. He tracks the ball naturally and he wins a lot of contested battles down the field. He is an excellent jumper and he high-points the ball consistently. There have been questions about his route running skills having not been asked to run a lot of the route tree in the Baylor offence.

He may need time to develop into a complete reciever, but his big play potential is too much to ignore in this situation for the Rams.

The Detroit Lions are now on the clock.

With the 16th selection of the 2016 boards.ie NFL Draft, the Detriot Lions select...

Jack Conkiln, Offensive Tackle, Michigan State

    Jack-Conklin.png

The Lions could go a few way here with how the draft has panned out. While Haloti Ngata was re-signed, the Lions are still trying to replace Fairley and Suh and struggled last season on the interior of their defense, making Robinson ,Reed & Rankins strong possibilities here. The Lions could also do with help across from Ansah and Ogbah would have been a contender here also.

However, given the Lions need to give Stafford better protection and that this year's draft is deep at DT, I've gone with Conklin, who I feel is very good value at this point. Some experts have ranked Conklin a better prospect than Stanley, given he is a Day One starter who can play either Guard or Tackle and with his age, he is still yet to peak physically. Conklin is very physical at the point of contact and looks for engagement. He is very strong physically and is very good at both run blocking and pass protection.

The Falcon's and JCTO are now on the clock...

With the 17th Pick the Atlanta Falcons pick

    Sheldon Rankin DT Louisville

    SRankins.jpg

With their the prospects gone for their immedite needs at OLB and DE gone the Falcons take Rankin as he will help improve their atrocious run stopping ability. Powerful A-gap guy who will draw double blocks is agile and has the ability to get to the edge and follow the ball. This makes him the perfect fit for the Falcons front 7 seven and run stopping ability.

Up next the Indianapolis Colts (Pudsy33)

WITH THE 18TH PICK OF THE NFL DRAFT THE INDIANAPOLIS COLTS SELECT....

    D0012050855--582570.JPG

    KEVIN DODD, DE FROM CLEMSON

I would have liked the man selected last, but I am still pretty happy with this pick. Trent Cole is 33 years of age, so picking up Dodd, a talented edge rusher who is comfortable in a 3-4 scheme, seems like a good option. Less heralded than his former Clemson colleague Lawson, he is every bit as dangerous.

He spent 3 years as a reserve, but really burst on to the scene this season, with 23 tackles for loss and 12 sacks. He has relentless energy, and a large NFL ready frame. Adept at getting behind the line to snuff out screens, options, and shovels. The only downside is his lack of experience, with only 1 year full time experience.

Next up is Paully D and the Buffalo Bills.

With the 19th pick of the 2016 Boards.ie Mock Draft, the Buffalo Bills select:

    gbl-hd-logo.png

    Noah Spence - OLB/DE - Eastern Kentucky

    noah-spence-gone.jpg

With the loss of Mario Williams, the Bills need pass rushers that fit in Rex Ryan's preferred 3-4 defensive scheme. In Spence, they get a rusher who would easily be a top 10 pick if it wasn't for his off the field baggage.

After showing the capabilities of a high 1st round pick at Ohio State, he was banned by the Big Ten after popping numerous times for failed drug tests (namely ecstasy). In an attempt to change his life, he entered a drug treatment facility and then with the help of Urban Meyer dropped down and spent a year beating up O-linemen and QB's at Eastern Kentucky before deciding to move to the NFL. He was easily the best prospect on show at the Senior Bowl, and despite putting on a poor 40 time at the Combine, it may be wise to pay more attention to his 10 yard split time which showed off the type of burst he has coming off the edge.

Spence, as mentioned, has a very quick burst, is very strong, will contribute positively in both pass rush and run situations and is extremely competitive which can be seen as good or bad, but Ryan will see it as a positive for sure. In terms of weaknesses, well you're always going to be waiting for him to slip up off the field, though to be fair to the guy he has been okay since leaving Ohio State. Also, he needs to get much better in coverage if he's going to be selected by a team running a 3-4 using him as linebacker.

The Bills and Rex Ryan himself have proven time and time again that they will take on character concerns if they feel it's worth it - Spence's top 10 talents fit the 'bill' in that regard. And many people believe he genuinely has changed for the better.

JaMarcus and the Jets are on the clock.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭JaMarcusHustle

With the 20th pick of the 2016 Boards.ie Mock Draft, the New York Jets select:

    JRvbZxg.png

    Jason Spriggs
    Offensive Tackle, Indiana

The Jets have a few needs going into this draft - Linebacker, Cornerback, Defensive Line (despite the recent high-profile investment in that area) and Quarterback, depending on what happens with Ryan Fitzpatrick.

But I think they should focus on the Offensive Line with this pick (given the players that are off the board in our draft). New York finally saw what above average Quarterback play can do for a team, and for a Quarterback to flourish he needs protection and weapons. They have the weapons, so it's to reinforce the protection.

D'Brickashaw Ferguson (LT) has been a model of consistency since entering the league and one of the most reliable tackles in football in his time. But his time is coming to an end, and New York fans will tell you (or at least they should tell you) that he is well into his decline now as evident by his play last year, and it's unrealistic to expect to magically turn it around.

Elsewhere on the line, Nick Mangold (C) continues to be a pillar - albeit one that has taken one or two steps backward but he still remains a top center in the league. But like Ferguson, he'll be 33 by the time the playoffs roll around and New York need to start investing in the future of their offensive line.

Breno Giacomini (RT) has a reputation as a "great locker room guy", but it's telling that this is the first compliment people will give him. He allowed 44 QB hits/hurries last year, so while he may have more charisma than a greased up turnstyle - he might not offer much more than one on the field.

James Carpenter (LG) has flirted dangerously with the "1st round bust" label, but has resurrected his career somewhat in New York, albeit to a level of "slightly above average". Not what you want from a first round pick, but when it wasn't your pick then I guess you don't mind too much.

As for Brian Winters (RG), you'll probably here more "he wasn't great" than "he was poor" re: last year. Perhaps not as consistently average as Carpenter, he at least showed signs of improvement as the year went on.

I mention all the above to illustrate that investing in the future of the offensive line needs to be a priority for New York. They've had the luxury of having two of the most consistent offensive lineman for the past number of years, but that time is coming to an end. If Ferguson regresses even more - the way things stand, their offensive line group - and specifically the offensive tackle position - will be one of the weakest spots on the team.

While it's tempting to try get Wilkerson's replacement here, or someone to cover for Revis' uncertain future (and to help forget Dee Milliner exists) - I think there's slightly more depth at these positions in the draft, or at least certainly in the pass rushing department. There's also more depth at interior linebacker, so I say take on of 2 first round tackles left on the board.

Taylor Decker of Ohio State is the other, but I think Spriggs is comfortably a better prospect. Decker has the dreaded Short Arms and Poor Bench Press combination that makes me worry, and he lacks a lot of athleticism you want from a potential Left Tackle to keep up with the athletic freaks that rush the passer in the league these days. He may carve a very nice career for himself, but I'd be surprised if it was anywhere other than at Right Tackle.

So yeah, I'm taking Spriggs. As for what he brings to the table - pedigree-wise, he's been a four year starter and a key contributor to an offensive line that has captured some headlines (Tevin Coleman's 2,000+ yards in 2014 the standout achievement). He also very rarely gave up sacks, particular in his junior and senior years.

Athletically, he's a dream. He's been the standout offensive line prospect in the pre-draft process, having a superb showing at the Senior Bowl and the most impressive results at the combine. He has the quickness to pre-empt any quick bursts off the line if scrimmage, long arms to hold pass rushers at bay, and is very strong (as evident by his bench press) to help with the ground game. He was a standout performer against the 2 elite defenses Indiana played last year against Ohio State and Michigan, and more than held his own against Joey Bosa.

It may be a reach, and ideally New York could trade back a bit and take Spriggs with a later first round pick. But ultimately, I'd rather take Spriggs here and avail of the depth at other positions in this draft rather than take a late round offensive line prospect. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Spriggs surge up the draft come the actual event.

With the 21st Pick of the NFL Draft...The Washington Redskins Select

    Andrew Billings, NT Baylor

    0YPocha0.jpeg

Washington go defensive line here in an attempt to shore up a struggling run defense. There were a few oiptions at this position still available, and the interior of the defensive line is probably the deepest position group in this draft.

Billings comes in to the NFL at a fairly your age (still only 20) but if he can develop as he has been so far he can be a feature of the Redskins front for years to come.

Picking a big NT is never going to "Win" you the draft, or have fans going mental on message boards but in the long run a pick such as this can have real benefits for the organization.

Also considered here were the 2 Alabama DT's (Reid and Robinson as well as C Ryan Kelly and also defensive backs but the call here is the big man from Waco.

With the 22nd pick, the Houston Texans select....
    635834716702200850-USATSI-8899680.jpg
    Josh Doctson, WR, TCU

Could have went a number of different ways with this pick. Almost every mock draft has the Texans going WR or DL here, but I can see them needing help at safety and they've a big hole at TE too. Hunter Henry was given serious consideration as IMO he's the only top tier TE in this draft but ultimately it came down to WR/DE. At this point in the draft I can see there being a run on receivers and decided to go with one of the top tier guys left. Rick Smith and BOB will give Brock every chance.

For me Doctson and Michael Thomas are the top two receivers in the draft and Will Fuller is in play too due to his home run hitting ability. Ultimately Doctson won out with his size, good but not great speed, leaping ability and excellent hands. 79 catches, 1327 yards and 14 touchdowns last year.

He's tall, athletic, has great hands and a tremendous leaping ability. He excels at making contested catches, which might be needed with Osweiler. A couple of knocks on him would be he wouldn't have experienced a full route tree at TCU and he could do with adding some muscle to his frame. Also, he'll be turning 24 in December.

Doctson leaves TCU as all time single game and career leading receiver in yardage aswell as holding 2 of the the only 3 seasons a TCU receiver went for over 1,000 yards. While he doesn't have the makings of a superstar he joins a promising bunch of receivers with Jaelen Strong, DeAndre Hopkins and Cecil Shorts.

With the 23rd pick of the 2016 Boards.ie Mock Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select:

    minnesota%20magnet.jpg

Will Fuller - WR - Notre Dame

    WFuller.jpg

Vikings are in a good place right now - they won the NFC North last year! Have a great spine of the team with Linval Joseph, Anthony Barr, Eric Kendricks & Harrison Smith excellent Probowl Calibur players on defence. Then you have a look on offense you have one of the greatest ever at RB in AP - they like McKinnon as backup - they have strengthened there Offensive line with Alex Boone & Andre Smith - a solid TE in Rudolph and have Bridgewater who seems to be a good game manager at QB - so why not give him more weapons around him

They got rid of Mike Wallace and Charles Johnson was not the same player last season as 2014. Stefon Diggs proved to be a good draft last year and i see him developing more this year.

So I have the Vikes picking up Will Fuller at WR to compliment with Diggs - he has questionmarks over his handling over the last 2 years, with 9 drops a season. But there is lights out speed and big play ability. Put Diggs in the Slot and set Fuller loose. Zimmer will work well with him and work out the kinks. Teddy would be happy to have this new fresh addition that would be much better than Mike Wallace on the outside

Lionbacker and the Bengals are on the clock.

    cincinnati-bengals-logo.png
    A'Shawn Robinson DT Alabama
    AShawn%20Robinson

With the Bengals having a clear need at WR, I was quite disappointed when I saw the last 2 picks been the ones I had in mind for them at this stage in the draft. With that said there is also a clear need at DT, where they have Geno Atkins & a declining Dominic Peko which definitely requires an upgrade. It just so happens that one the best DT's in the draft class is here waiting in A'Shawn Robinson, who has a freakish speed/strength combination & can easily fit into either a 4-3 or 3-4 defence.
In 2015 he recorded 43 tackles, with 7 for loss & 3 sacks. Not sure I could justify the receiver's that were left, with him still unclaimed at this point in the draft.

With the 25th pick of the 2016 Boards.ie Mock Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers selectsteelers-logo.jpg
Wide Receiver - Tyler Boyd - Pittsburgh

    78764b8c8f38299ccd760973ce815fc4_crop_north.jpg?w=630&h=420&q=75

After some confusion about earlier picks in the round (there is an investigation on-going by commissioner Goodell into the conduct of an unnamed GM) and reassessing their options the front office have gone with the local boy of Tyler Boyd who has shown his worth to the Panthers as he was able to maintain production during his three years playing with three different QB's to leave him as the school's all-time leading receiver.

It is a position where we have an obvious need and we feel that we can really excel with a local hero.
Boyd leaves Pitt with school records for career catches (254) and receiving yards (3,361). He is currently ranked as the No. 5 draft-eligible receiver in the 2016 class and projected as a top-50 pick by NFLDraftScout.com. Although he didn't surpass 1,000 yards in 2015 (the only season he failed to reach that benchmark), Boyd set a career best with 91 catches and added six touchdowns. With streaky quarterback play and running back James Conner sidelined for the 2015 season, the Pitt play-calling manufactured touches for Boyd, including handoffs and screens, as he was the team's best playmaker on offense. Despite playing with three different starting quarterbacks each of his three years with the Panthers, Boyd produced consistent numbers each season, breaking several school records in the process. Boyd has an instant accelerator to reach his top speed with his initial strides, using sharp cuts and burst off his plant foot to mix his gears in his patterns.

With the 26h pick of the 2016 Boards.ie Mock Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select3041229-inline-hawks-2012.png
Guard - Cody Whitehair - Kansas state

    usa-today-8108672.0.jpg

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/profiles/cody-whitehair?id=2555132

I think this is a no brainer given what's on the board (I might have looked at Billings at DT or even Darron Lee at Lb'er had they been on the board). I also considered Ryan Kelly (Alabama centre) but the Bama oline men haven't faired too well in recent years and their last well touted centre Barrett Jones is virtually out of the league (though he's had injury issues).

Seattle GM John Schneider must love watching Russell Wilson run around in circles scrambling or is doing his best to get him killed - I can't tell which.

Pff tend to agree ranking their line 30th of 32 teams and they've since lost Russell Okung - the best player on their line (though injuries are his issue).

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/01/20/pro-ranking-all-32-offensive-lines-this-season/

Anyway Seattle clearly need to strengthen their offensive line and let me tell you that the human turnstile that is Jmarcus Webb is not the answer - so rather than pick the 5th best tackle it makes sense to draft the consensus best guard prospect.

Whitehair is compared to Zach Martin and while not as physically gifted he stays square to his target, has aggressive hands and anchors well. He has the tape, quickness and core strength of a top offensive lineman, but did hurt his stock with a terrible performance in the bench press in the combine - with only 16 reps (2nd last).

That's a slight concern but I always prefer tape over the underwear olympics. His versatility having played guard and both tackle positions very well are a huge asset.

With the 27th pick of the 2016 Boards.ie Mock Draft, the Green Bay Packers select
    green-bay-packers-logo-nfl.gif
Jarran Reed - Defensive Tackle out of Alabama.
    hi-res-1402ae24871ceb74a8cf89c76306be89_crop_exact.jpg?w=340&h=226&q=85

A wrecking ball that will add much needed presence to the front three of Green Bay, especially with the recent unexpected retirement of B.J Raji.

I had toyed with the idea of taking a pass rusher here, such as Ogbah or Floyd, and prepare for the retirement of Peppers. But ultimately, I think this is the sounder decision for the Packers. Tight end is also a need, and Hunter Henry I considered, but I don't see the value there at 27 overall.

Goes without saying that Reed comes from an outstanding program, which should help with his transition to the pros, as he will likely be thrust into a starting berth from the off.

Playing in that three man front, between the guards, or even face on with the tackles, will help suit him, as he is a run stuffer first and foremost, and an elite one at that. So while his pass rush, and hand movement for that pass rush, is a little lacking, having the two outside linebackers in Matthews and Peppers being responsible for generating that heat will allow Reed to do his thing and be an instant contributor for the Packers.

To put his run defense into perspective, Reed played on 55% of snaps in the last two years at Alabama. And while that may highlight his lack of a pass rush, in that playing time he racked up a ridiculous 108 tackles.

Perhaps not the flashiest pick, but I feel he's fits better than some of the other defensive lineman in the mix, such as Chris Jones, Vernon Butler and Adolphus Washington.

So after the loss of Sean Smith to Oakland , and no longer having a shortage at safety , I think the Chiefs will go with a CB again this year in the 1st round.

Apple is a two year starting cornerback out of Ohio State where he managed 21 passes defended, 86 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 4 interceptions. This earned him Second Team All-Big Ten honors in his second year. He also can play both man and zone coverages.

Tall, athletic frame with long arms and solid build. He is disruptive and uses his length to keep receivers uncomfortable. Not shy to get stuck in as a run defender either.

Other picks considered were Artie Burns, William Jackson III & Mackensie Alexander.

With the 29th pick in the 2016 Boards.ie NFL Mock Draft the Arizona Cardinals select QB Paxton Lynch

Arizona don't have any glaring weaknesses which means they can afford to sure up the long term at any given position even in the first round.

Given that Carson Palmer has another good year or 2 left in him means they can draft a qb with the idea of taking the reins after a settling in period.

No qb has a better upside than Paxton Lynch. Ideal size and great ball security. His down field pass is still very much an unknown quantity but isn't enough to put me off pulling the trigger here

  • with the 30th pick the Carolina Panthers select Taylor Decker, Ohio State

    usa-today-8375428.0.jpg

Was very very tempted by Makenzie Alexander to put across from norman and complete the defense but cam cant be expected to do everything so I have to go offence (also alexander is more man to man and the panthers zone up more often than not) so I will pick Taylor decker with this pick.

It only fills one of the tackle spots so oher may need to stay as a starter unfortunately but Decker can walk in as a RT and fit right in to this run based offence. Cams ability to run should help hide any potential footwork/lateral agility issues when it comes to pass blocking while he learns. But more so than probably any other offence in the nfl Decker can come right in an thrive in Carolina.

Decker is big (6-7, 310 lbs) and athletic he is the big 10s offensive lineman of the year and comes in with a winning mentality to match his new teammates. He has the power and motor to instantly be a big piece in Carolinas run game. I worry his lateral agility at times inability to get low on a pass rush could prevent him from playing LT but this is a win now team and I feel safe dropping him in at RT and letting him attack the defence.

The dream here is that Decker shows the ability to play LT at this level and we can slide oher back to RT where he is a much better fit. With an improvement in the 0-line and Benjamin returning cam could have another leap in production this year, a prospect that will terrify dcs around the league.

Carolina still need a another tackle, a cb to play opposite norman (don’t feel comfortable with boykin or benwikere on the outside), a safety to play opposite kurt coleman (and hes no guarantee to remain at the level he has been playing either) and a young RB (henry in the second would be a dream) but tackle was the biggest need and iv gotten a guy who fits the system and is good value at this pick

    1450400246-ROBERT_NKEMDICHE_FALL_FOOTBALL_47794129.JPG?w=1200&h=630&format=jpg&crop=faces&fit=crop

Really wanted to pick up a first round quarterback, but obviously Goff and Wentz were gone early and Paxton Lynch was taken just a couple of picks ago. Denver will need 2 more QBs I believe, yet they should look to pick a stronger player in the first round, draft one QB and maybe take someone the likes of Christian Hackenberg in later rounds.

With the losses of Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan the D-Line is the second most important area to strengthen up in the off-season. At 6'3" and 294 lbs he's a big presence with a great build. He's a very athletic player as well for the position, as shown by his 4.87 40-yard dash and his 35" vertical leap. He's a big character that you must weigh up risk with reward for, but for where Denver are in the picks means that a risk like this could pay off great rewards for them.

    EMMANUEL OGBAH, DE, OKLAHOMA ST.

    55dfe5d667d30.image.jpg?resize=300%2C277

So here we are at the top of the second round. My initial plan was to get a WR to put opposite Josh Gordon, but the crazy run on WRs at the end of the first round has made me reconsider.

The Browns desperately need help rushing the passer, and the explosiveness of Ogbah may be the answer. To be honest I am surprised he is still on the board after his fantastic combine. At 273lb, his 4.63 40 time was a real eye opener for teams. He can line up either as DE or OLB, and has the right combination of speed and power to get to the QB time after time.

With the 34th pick of the 2016 Boards.ie Mock Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select:

    Dallas-Cowboys.jpg

Derrick Henry - RB - Alabama

    201601112005723074523

Ok so i was honestly looking for Alexander to drop here......

Dallas do need Dline help.... CB help....

But then i put my Jerry Jones hat on... and i know that he has better advisors now and becoming a bit more conservative.... But its Jerry and if they take a QB in Round one - why not go RB here and build the back field after building up the best offensive line in the league

Henry is a beast - at 6 ft 3 and nearly 250lbs - he is a monster downhill - and with Dallas's Oline holding the first defense Henry thrives facing the second and third level of defense! One thing that goes against him is his pass catching but its not a big issue as he has the potential to be a leading back in the league. He won the Hiesman Trophy in 2015 and for some reason seems to be valued quiet low...

This draft could spell the end of McFadden in Dallas as Morris was just signed and Dunbar was resigned - Dunbar will give the passing option from the backfield.

If Cowboys went with 1-2 pick that we mocked their franchise would be set for years with an OLine and QB,RB and Bryant at WR

glued and the Chargers are on the clock.

Not the most endorsing picture :p but this guy is a great pickup at this spot for the Chargers and fills a major need. This guy will instantly improve this team and he'll also open up lanes for Melvin Gordon. He's in the top 20 players in this draft and the best centre available IMO. He's rarely on the backfoot, he ran both gap and block schemes and an was excellent pass protector throughout his three seasons. A big centre who will be able to match guys toughness and competitiveness at the next level.

    Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech

    kendall-fuller-ncaa-football-virginia-tech-ohio-state.jpg

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aran7OL3M0E

The Ravens need WRs or CBs. With more of a push on the top WR in the 1st round this leaves the door open for the Ravens to take one of the best CB in the draft.

Fuller is a solid ball hawk in the short to mid passing range and has the ability to get in the face of WR. He always takes a direct route to the ball and has got good instinct. He lacks size expected to be an outside guy but it shouldn't stop him and Fullers problems are with true outside wide receivers and he has a lot to learn to be ready to start in the NFL but if coached right he has the makings of getting the job done. If drafted by the Ravens it will take solid work on both sides to get him ready but the Ravens are the right team to mold Fuller into an outside guy.

With the 37th pick in the 2016 Boards.ie Mock Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select:

    Germain Ifedi - OT/G - Texas A&M

    18318588-mmmain.jpg

When I was researching the 49ers needs, it quickly became apparent that they could do with improving at almost every area of the field. I like the Goff pick if they're going to have to take one at that position as he's the best QB in the draft IMO and it's clear that Kaepernick has no long term future in San Fran. However, with the very good guard Alex Boone departing for Minnesota, the offensive line needs vast improvement or Goff's going to be up against it from the start.

The 49ers take Germain Ifedi, a 3 year starter for the Aggies who has played as a G and RT during his time in Texas and his versatility could prove to be useful to the Niners. However, it must be noted I'm taking him as a G as I don't feel he is up to the task of becoming an NFL tackle.

At 6-6 and 324lbs he's huge and a bit of a mauler. His 36 inch arms are very long and it's well known that Baalke puts a lot of stock in arm length. Ifedi has also shown at A&M the ability to slow down double teams. In terms of weaknesses, he was killed by quick edge rushers last season in college but slotting him in at G this won't be as much of an issue. His technique also needs work, but again at G it will be less obvious.

There's no doubt about it - he will frustrate and probably drive the coaches crazy when he first arrives with his technique issues and often brainless flag drawing, but if it clicks for him it will certainly be worth the coaching staff's hair pulling. Mel Kiper has him projected to the Jets at #20 in his latest mock draft and while that doesn't mean a whole lot in itself, it does mean his name is picking up steam among teams. It's a value pick that also fills a need IMO.

With the 38th pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars select.....

    Leonard Floyd,OLB,Georgia

Ok I'm going to start off by saying I 100% bottled taking Jaylon Smith here. He's the best player in the draft but I just think the jaguars can't afford waiting a year for an impact. At this stage of the Gus Bradley project they're beginning to enter win now territory and will probably need to at least enter playoff contention this year.

Looking at the Jaguars needs, a centre is needed to replace Wisneiwski and if Ryan Kelly was available he'd be an easy choice. Notre Dame's Nick Martin was considered as was Garnett from Stanford at guard but I think the Jaguars have two potentially very good guards in Linder and Cann.
They also have a good looking pair at CB in Amukamara and House but CB help is always needed and I think William Jackson III would be the steal of the draft here.
However I'm going with Leonard Floyd at the Jaguars Leo pass rushing position. Getting Dante Fowler back will be like a new player this year but who knows how much he will contribute after ACL surgery. Floyd is a pure pass rusher and should fill the Leo well. He is very slight though and definitely needs to add some muscle. He can use his speed in the hybrid Leo role.

    Tampa-Bay-Bucs.jpg

With the 39th pick of the NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Jaylon Smith, OLB, Notre Dame.

    635778496500230345-USATSI-8790445.jpg

It was just too hard to turn down the best player in the draft at this stage of the draft. The recent news on Smith sounds positive and he is expected to make a full recovery. The Bucs have a tremendous duo at LB with David and Alexander, and this addition gives them the top linebacker core in the league in my opinion.

The Bucs need to help Gerald McCoy at rushing the passer against arguably the best quarter-backing division in the league. However I dont see any other pass rusher specialists left in this second round that is worth such a high pick. The addition of Robert Ayers will hopefully help this problem along with the addition of Smith. While Smith mightn't offer the pass rush of a Spence, he has a far more rounded game than any other player on this side of the ball in this draft to compliment his still excellent pass rushing skills.

This pick here is clearly BPA which is the way every team should be drafting. Alexander has continued to show great promise at Mike and David is arguably one of the top players at Will in the league at the moment. Smith would initially play at SAM as he is elite at breaking down plays with speed and he can also rush the passer better than any other LB in this draft in my opinion.

From watching limited tape, I feel Smith can read plays extremely quickly and has showed excellent closing speed when closing in on the QB / ball carrier. He will be one of the NFL's most forceful tacklers in my opinion after seeing him show significant power to knock ballcarriers back during matches. Smith is a rare combination of elite quickness and power.

Smith can play back in coverage whilst also rushing the passer which makes him an extremely strong prospect and I believe he is a true three down defender. The injury is the only negative but the noises sound good and I think Smith will be a top 5 defensive player in the league within three years, whilst the Bucs find a way to fix their pass rushing problems as well as giving them the strongest LB core in the league.

With Stanley taken in the first the Oline has been strengthened already and didn't want to double down on the Oline as i think there's quite a few holes on the rorster. I thought other areas of weakness on the roster were CB3, S, RB and WR and LB.

After the big investment in the Dline in FA i decided to target the Offensive side of the ball and help out Eli. The pick came down to RB or WR and i felt that there would be better prospects available at RB in later rounds.

I was delighted that Thomas made it through the run on WRs at the end of the first and I fancy him as a better prospect than some of the WRs gone already. He has really good measurables for a WR at 6-3 and 210lbs, his hands are excellent and he has shown a good ability to go up and win the ball. He has a better burst than would be expected for someone his size and he has shown the ability to run good routes. Playing at Ohio St he wasn't utilised as much as other WRs so his stats aren't as impressive as other players at this position. He suffered from poor and inconsistent QB play this year

There is no guarantee Victor Cruz will be able to make it back on the field or how good he will be if he does. Eli only has a few years left to get a third ring and surrounding him with weapons should be a priority. With Thomas lined up opposite OBJ they will have potentially the best WR duo in the league and be a nightmare for opposing defences.

With the defensive line needs addressed in the first round, it made sense to pick up a corner to help out in the secondary. He led his team in interceptions and pass deflections the past 2 seasons, and has nfl ready size. He is comfortable defending in man, and can shut down a wide out without safety help. Superb ball skills, although some questions over his speed.

    dolphinsnewlogo1.png

    Joshua Garnett, Offensive Guard, Stanford

    DAL1410040381_Stanford_at_Notre_Dame.jpg

The Miami Dolphins have had problems on the O-line for years, with Tannehill been the most sacked QB since 2012. While the OT's & C are adequate enough for the season, the guards are a disaster.
Dallas Thomas was the worst OG last year according to Pro Football Focus & Billy Turner wasn't much better. They didn't pick up any marquee signings during free agency, so I've gone for Joshua Garnett here.

At 6-4 & 312 pounds he is one the most physical "in your face" blockers in this class. He is a solid pass protector with a powerful punch and also an asset in the run game, where he is adept at the getting to the second level & running defenders down.
He has played his entire career at guard, so the transition to pro football should be easier than had he played OT in college. He does tend to have a bad habit of overextending and lowering his head at times, but nothing that a bit of coaching can't iron out.

With the 43rd selection of the 2016 boards.ie NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams select...

    Connor Cook, Quarterback, Michigan State.

The QB situation in the Rams new home is bad, to say the least. With an elite defense, strong running game and first round pick Corey Coleman, the Rams simply have to take a QB at this point. Without adding a veteran signal caller in free agency, it's quite clear the Rams have plans to address QB early in the draft.

Cook is abit of an enigma. They are things to love about him as a prospect; three years starter in a quality Big Ten program, his ability to operate in a pro style offense, great mobility, accurate deep ball, tough, can make pre snap reads, can make all the throws and is effective against the blitz. Cook is also not afraid to take a chance and throw the ball deep, although his decision making in some circumstances will need to improve.

But their are certainly things that will worry GM's. His pass accuracy at 58% is poor for a QB at a top program, but to Cook's defense, he took alot of shots down field and didn't play in an offense designed to pad a QB's numbers. He certainly needs work with his footwork and his throwing motion, but these I feel can be worked on at the next level. Then we have the issues with his intangibles. Not being made a captain at MSU, turned down an invite to the Senior Bowl and rumoured to have not interviewed well at the combine.

Although worrying, I think there is enough on Cook's performances for MSU to warranty taking a chance on him in the second round. There is a risk to taking Cook here, but I think the reward will certainly be there if he works out. Also the Rams simply have to do something with their situation at QB.

The Raiders are now on the clock....

With the 44th pick in the draft, the Oakland Raiders select Vonn Bell, Strong Safety, Ohio State.

On the phone on a train so I'll flesh this out later, which is exactly what I was giving out about others saying in previous years, but I'll get this filled out this evening.

With the 45th Pick of the 2016 NFL Draft The Los Angeles Rams select

    9043245.jpeg

WILLIAM JACKSON III - CB - Houston

The Rams have gone offense with their first 2 picks and have the luxury of a second pick in round 2. This time they go defense and address the secondary which suffered some losses in the off season.

The Rams lost both Janoris Jenkins and Rodney McLeod so it makes sense that they would look at the secondary.

Jackson is probably the one corner in the draft with the measurables GM's are looking at, height and length. In Pro Football Focus rating system Jackson rates as the second best corner in the draft.

When opposing QB's targeted Jackson they got a passer rating of only 57.9. He took away 5 INT's last year and has the speed (4.32 at his pro day) to mean he shouldn't get beaten deep.

He suffered an MCL injury in 2014, but bounced back last year to start 12 games.

You can question the level of his opponents he faced in college but he showed up well, has all the qualities needed and I think will be a good pick for the Rams.

The other option under consideration was safety Karl Joseph.

With the 46th pick of the 2016 Boards.ie Mock Draft, the Detroit Lions select
    474.gif
Vernon Butler - Defensive Tackle - Louisiana Tech.
    Vernon-Butler-La.-Tech.jpg

I had to check my excel file four times before I believed that this guy was still available. That run of WR both helped and hindered, in that while Detroit need a WR, the value in the position wasn't there, and opened up the value at DT.

I won't lie, I had to strongly consider Jonathan Bullard here at 46, but ultimately, I think the potential Butler has could see him taken in the first round on April 28th.

Detroit are desperately trying to add some quality to that line to go with Ansah, after the recent losses of Suh and Fairly. Bringing Butler in here will do exactly that. A tough run defender with a high motor, who while raw, has a potentially devastating and unique skill set. Ultimately, its his rawness that sees him drop this far, I imagine, but when you're drawing comparisons to Muhammad Wilkerson, its easy to see why Detroit would pull the trigger here.

This is a guy the size of Linval Joseph, and he brings that stoutness and gap integrity to the interior, but I think his ceiling is even higher. While his bull rush is excellent, his pass rush moves do need work, but I would not be surprised if we look back on this stacked DT class in three years time, and Butler was sitting pretty at the top of the pile, in all honesty.

His Senior Bowl week showed that he had all the potential to improve from his final year college production of 50 tackles, 10 for a loss and three sacks, as he displayed a speed rush that Offensive Linemen couldn't handle, and a pass rushing ability in the 1 on 1s that showed his ever improving technique in that regard.

Once this guy gets coached the right way and fully understands what he can do, he will be a straight up nightmare on that line alongside Ansah. I would expect him to contribute straight away, and be a real force on that line by year 2.

The Saints, and kennyb3, are on the clock.

With the 47th pick of the 2016 Boards.ie Mock Draft, the New Orleans Saints select

    Austin Johnson-Defensive Tackle-Penn State
    AR-312319925.jpg&q=80&MaxW=550&MaxH=400&RCRadius=5

The Saints defense was an absolute mess last season which resulted in Rob Ryan getting fired and Dennis Allen stepping in in his place. So I dont think it would be a surprise to anyone if the Saints decided to spend the majority of their picks on the defensive side of the ball! Their biggest need is probably an edge rusher but I didnt see a prospect worth take at this stage and even though they recently signed Nick Fairly I still think they can use all the help they can get across that defensive line. there are DT/DE left in the draft with higher ceilings but in my opinion I think they need someone that can start right away and for me thats Austin Johnson.
Johnson is also a versatile player who can easily fit in to a 3 or 4 front defense, this is important for the Saints because I'm still not sure they know what sort of defense they're going, they were 3-4 up until Ryan left but from what Ive read Allen is more at home with a 4-3 D.
Johnson Brings the ability to be a top class run stuffing nose tackle and the start of his career he may just be a 2 down player, but with the right coaching and his strength, technique and motor I dont think it will be long before he's getting after QB's
And heres bonus footage of a fat man TD:D

With the 48th pick of the draft the Indianapolis Colts select Karl Joseph, Safety, West Virginia.

  • The buffalo bills select sterling Shepard Oklahoma

    shepard-desktop.jpg
Went defence in the first with noah and now that side of the ball is stacked its time to help the offence with in my opinion the safest receiver In the draft.

Shepard comes from an nfl family. He has probably the safest pair of hands in the draft dropping just 8 of 253 balls thrown his way. He has good speed but elite quickness and you can see it in his route running he consistently creates separation out of his cuts. Although only 5’10 he had a 41 inch jump in the combine and you could see it in his play particularly towards the end of his final year he started to consistently come down with the ball in jump ball situations. He is a willing blocker and blocks well for his size.

He may need to work on his release in the nfl but outside of that I don’t see any weakness with him (perhaps his size but as I said he plays bigger than he is)

In my opinion he can walk in day one as a weapon from the slot but I do believe his rounte running will allow him to develop into an outside receiver if the team wants him to.

With the 50th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft the Atlantic Falcons select Keanu Neal, Safety, Florida.

It's no secret at this stage that the Falcons Defence is soft. And as much as a good edge rusher to play opposite Vic Beasley is needed, I think the opportunity to add Neal was too much to turn down.

Neal has absolutely no regard for his, or anyone else's, health. He hits like every tackle is his last. Time will tell how long he can keep that mentality in the NFL but he will immediately toughen up the Falcons Defence. He can miss tackles trying to land that big hit but it's not a major problem with him.
