The official name of a new multi-million pound research vessel could be the RRS Boaty McBoatface after the internet was asked for its ideas.

When the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) opened up suggestions to name their new ship, little could they have predicted what the frontrunner would be.

Steaming ahead of its rivals, RRS Boaty McBoatface is outstripping the likes of Endeavour, Henry Worsley, David Attenborough, Falcon and many more offerings.

Other tongue-in-cheek submissions include It’s bloody cold here, Usain Bolt, Ice Ice Baby and Notthetitanic.

What would be the AH's suggestions for the ship name?

Seeing as it's a royal research ship, it should have something evoking exploration as a title I believe.
Something as simple as the traditional compass points could work; north south kanye west

RRS I Like Big Boats & I Cannot Lie is a pretty great suggestion too. It's on 486 votes. Boaty McBoatface is on 38,608 - 10 times more than the 2nd place choice :)

I'm assuming the queen or some of her equine-faced offspring would be involved in launching the vessel, so the thought of them having to go to the ceremony and recite something along the lines of "I hereby launch the RRS Boaty McBoatface, may god preserve all those who travel upon her" whilst maintaining a straight face, and then hopping a champagne bottle off the hull would make for a wonderful spectacle.

*goes to cast several more votes to try and make the dream a reality*

    RRS I blame my mother.

Be disappointing not to see an Ian M Banks reference for naming ships. As big a fan of his as I am, Boatimus Prime is my favourite.

Aer Lingus there like the annoying friend who doesn't know when a joke has stopped being funny and just keeps repeating it over and over and over.

This is why nobody wants to hang out with you Aer Lingus.
