Then theres the Bosch PSR 1080 which looks identical to the PSB 10.8 for the same price! No hammer action though.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-PSR-1080-LI-Lithium-Ion/dp/B00KX8JWO4/ref=zg_bs_1939319031_36

Edit: Its the older model so not really worth it.

Seems like I have until April 14th to pull the trigger, so I might as well wait and see if one comes up in a lightning deal.

The PSB 10.8 Li-2 looks like a good all rounder for home use.

Hammer action is a necessity for external drilling & for interior block walls. Better to buy an -all in 1' rather than a 2nd drill later.

I reckon Negative Amazon reviews are worth their weight in gold.

I'm tempted to buy a Bosch Drill.

Theres this bargain Bosch PSR 14.4 for £20 with battery, charger and case:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-Cordless-NiCad-Driver-Battery/dp/B000RW025E/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

But theres a lot of negative reviews about the battery and charger being hopeless.
The battery loses its charge after a few days, and is meant to have not much run time, and only lasts about a year before you need to replace the battery.
The batteries cost more than the drill itself.
The charger does not automatically turn off the charge.
Edit: its an NiCd battery which seems to be the culprit.

Then theres the more compact yet higher capacity PSB 10.8 with hammer action for £50:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bosch-603983972-Cordless-Lithium-Ion-Featuring/dp/B00TIHP60U/ref=sr_1_2?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1458264316&sr=1-2&keywords=Bosch+drill

Seems the safer bet but more than twice the price.

    I'm torn! lol

I have that drill a year now, not a problem with it. Very happy with battery life on it for the amount of use it gets. Any time i come back to it, it has held its charge.

Moved house recently and it's made Ikea and hanging mirrors, blinds, etc an absolute breeze

Better off with Li-Ion if you want a battery which holds its charge.
10.8v is hardly a viable option for a serious DIYer, generally it's better to go with at least 18v.but the 14.4v has a 2ah battery so would last that bit longer if you are just using for light stuff around the house. I would always look for something that includes two batteries.

High capacity power bank, although since it 3.3v/22400mah at 5v it's going to be more like 14000mah
    12.99£

Seems like an incredible price for 22400 mah

I also see this one on Lightning Deals today by EasyAcc (good brand) at 20000 mah & its GBP23.99 reduced from GBP99.99 ???

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0142925GQ?ref_=gbps_tit_s-3_8407_ba9e0de1&smid=AJUR3R8UN71M4

So the EC one looks like a great deal.

Always ignore the "Price" price on amazon, its just some ridiculous made up RRP.

The "Sale" Price is what it usual sells for.

Keep an eye on Aldi and Lidl for a hammer action drill, they are seriously the best quality for that price range you can get and come with 3 year no questions warranties. Our one is about 8 years old now and has had ahard life but still does the job.

Yeah, had an email about that earlier in the week, probably the best value around at the moment but that price is only valid until midnight tonight so if anybody wants it they'd need to act quickly. There's a code IRELAND5 which will give you another €5 off, for a grand total of €114.95 delivered. Not to be sneezed at.

How much did it end up costing you?

I think it sold out from Amazon Direct @ £49 before you posted.

You'll be waiting about a week before it comes back in stock I think.

With the Euro conversion it cost €66.71 delivered to Dublin.

Tempted to cancel it (not dispatched yet) and go with the HITACHI DV18DGL/JC 18V 1.5AH LI-ION CORDLESS COMBI DRILL on sale in Screwfix http://www.ie.screwfix.com/hitachi-dv18dgl-jc-18v-1-5ah-li-ion-cordless-combi-drill.html which Deadl0ck linked to and with the €5 off code Marhay70 shared it's only €115. I like the idea of having two batteries so you don't run out when doing a job but is it really worth the extra €50 when it's going to be used for fairly infrequent DIY and I already have an old heavy duty cabled hammer drill for masonry work and anything a battery drill couldn't handle.

    Decisions decisions!!

The Hitachi is certainly worth €50 more than the featured Bosch but really, it's an all round drill. If all you're going to be using it for is occasionally driving screws then you probably don't need it, in fact you don't need a hammer action drill at all.

I have seriously abused the hitachi one using it to grind, polish, using a wire wheel, elongating holes in steel. Case is a bit loose and creaky, battery contacts burned a bit but other than thats its still going great never expected it to last this long.

The problem with drills from Aldi and Lidl, as I've said before on these forums, is they invariably come with just one battery. This is not a problem if you just need to drill a couple of holes or drive a few screws but for any serious DIY it's a major PITA. I doubt even,
that you could buy a spare battery if you wanted to and if you could, it would bring the price to near enough the same level as the lower end Bosch and Hitachi.

That's a very good point. Batteries bought on their own & nearly the same price as the actual unit. You certainly need 2 as a minimum & I prefer to have three.

18V 2.0AH LI-ION CORDLESS COMBI DRILL with two batteries for €91.16 but not sure if it has a hammer action?

EDIT: Description says "Torque Settings + Drill + Hammer"

    http://www.ie.screwfix.com/erbauer-cdt218h-18v-2ah-li-ion-cordless-combi-drill.html

Can get it for €81.16 with the code SPRINGSW1 providing you are spending €80 or more valid until 10 April per CH3OH's post above.

    Good/better value than the Hitachi?

Erbauer is Chineese crap with a german name. The same as Mac Alister sounds British. These days even names like Black & Decker are just piece of rubbish made extremely cheaply.

IMHO there are only two sensible options:
    - buy mid-range or high-range - Bosch (BLUE!), Makita, Metabo, Milwakee, Dewalt, Hitachi. Those will last lifetime for even an advanced DIY person, with longer warranty and good parts/service.
    - buy cheap at Lidl/Aldi - you accept the limitation: if it brakes out of 3-years warranty, it goes to the bin. For a seasonal DIY they will be fine though. When it comes to the batteries I tend to check different tools and most of the time the battery is similar enough to be able to adapt it (for instance similar 10.8V battery came with: a drill, a reciprocating saw, a dremel, a multitool).

Buying low-range from Bosch (Green) makes little (but still some) sense. True, you will be able to get spares - but in general they are not of better quality than the stuff from Lidl, but come with 1 year warranty and are usually 30-50% more expensive.

Buying other non-branded or "branded" tools makes NO sense. No quality, little warranty, no parts etc. Just waste of money...

When it comes to buying consumables, I always go with Bosch Professional. They last much longer and are pleasure to work with.

Thanks deadl0ck, same here but I did a bit of googling and it turns out they are a UK based manufacturer but had an iffy reputation years ago as a result of getting their products made in China but in 2012 or thereabouts they onshored assembly back to the UK and things have been much better since. You'll find the usual mix of reviews from people who love their Erbauer tools (including full time carpenters etc) Vs those who say don't waste your money and stick with the main brands.

The post I found which tilted me in favour of buying (which I just did and at €81 delivered using the discount code seems a very good deal) was

"erbauer, in German means builder. The headquarters of the company are based in Yeovil, UK just near Cornwall. The older products they made were made in china but the new lithium ion tools are mad in the UK, Yeovil. I purchased the 18v impact driver and would most definitely recommend. They are an up and coming brand if you're a diy'er I would purchase these i do a lot of trade work and its never let me down it does better than my friends Bosch 18v."

It comes with a 2 year warranty so that gives me a fair degree of comfort as Screwfix are very strong on after sales support etc. Only time will tell whether it turns out to be good value or not. Fingers crossed.

I have a parkside hammer drill about 8 years old you can still buy batteries at €20 by contacting kompernass ireland, considering a battery for an 8 year old dewalt is about £80 I'd consider that a bargain.

Saw this thread last week while not a registered member,& I proceeded to purchase the Hitachi drill mentioned earlier in the thread.

The drill arrived yesterday & I proceeded to go online & try to register for the extended warranty.

Apparently the extended warranty is not available to us Irish.

    Hi Jimmy 74.

    Thanks for your email.

I look after our Screwfix account so I take complaints like this very seriously.

I have contacted Screwfix this morning about this situation.

They know that our 3 year warranty is UK only, and it should not be mentioned on their website.

We can’t register your product on our website as it only accepts UK postcodes, and would also be in breach of contracts we have with a ROI wholesaler.

What I can do on this occasion is offer my apologies.

In addition, please keep your receipt from Screwfix, and keep my details in case you have any problems with the product.

Also keep the details of my service manager.

I will continue to discuss with Screwfix.

If you hear from them, please let me know.

    Kind regards

    Dear Chris,
Thank you for your quick reply.
I will get straight to the point, your reply is simply not good enough.
This drill was bought off an Irish registered company who have the three year extended warranty advertised(as can be seen from the screen grab from their site) & also on ye're own website which serves both the UK & Ireland it does not mention Ireland is excluded from this offer as can be seen from another screen grab from ye're own website(although this grab is from another drill in ye're line of models).
On the packaging that comes with the box again their is no mention that Ireland is excluded, only requirement is that it's registered within 30 days.

One of the main reasons for purchasing this drill was the peace & mind of the extended 3 year warranty that was advertised as available once registered online.

    Regards,
    Jimmy 74

Thats my backup plan but personally feel it should be easier than that.

I wonder how many other extended warranties that screwfix offer that aren't supposed to be officially offered in Ireland.

An up date to this, just received a phonecall from screwfix & the lady on the phone said that once you keep all your documentation/invoice that if there is any problem within the 3 years screwfix will cover it at their own cost.

i know the chances of something going wrong are slim but sometimes these things do happen, its good to know that it is covered.

Do you know if it comes with a carry case? Cannot see it mentioned in spec. Seems like a good price for a once a month DIYer. Am I missing something? Have a Bosch green cordless one for about 10 years but battery life is poor and/or struggles on masonry jobs.

    Stay away.

I had exactly the same aldi drill. And have to admit it would be suitable for once-off DIYer. :pac:

The battery is crap in this, will discharge on its own. Any light drill like that will struggle in masonry jobs.

I grew up in a concrete apartment block and any drilling was a nightmare - until we've got a rotary hammer. That bloody thing drills on its own, you just hold it and keep watching it going deeper and deeper...

I highly recommend a light 10.8V drill for driving screws (if you can use Torx screws) and woodwork plus a corded rotary hammer for masonry.

Not really a rip-off. If you want a prime example of that try buying in € from Amazon.uk or paying an English supplier via Paypal.

19.99 GBP is €25.30 add the 3% difference in VAT that's €26. Then add the extra cost of servicing a warranty in Ireland and carriage to an island nation etc. etc. Then round up to the nearest ninety nine ninety nine ninety nine. No rip off here

Back on topic if you need a drill do yourself a favour and spend a bit more this bottom of the barrel stuff is junk tiny brushes, rubbish bearing and gears, flimsy casing, crappy batteries, crappy charger. It's a toy. If you rally want to get it make sure to keep the receipt.

Looking to get a drill for a bit of general diy and the occasional heavier bit, eg drilling a hole in a fairly heavy interior wall in our house. Gonna go the Aldi route of relatively cheap and decent warranty.

Spotted this one in my local Aldi today which was obviously on sale a while ago. Can anyone tell me anything about, what it would be good at, what it's limitations would be etc.

    Thanks in advance

Edit here's a link in case the photo isn't that clear http://www.smartpound.com/story.php?title=work-zone-24v-cordless-hammer-drill-£44-99-aldi

Meant to be decent from what I remember when it was on sale, but overkill for most DIY stuff, is a big lump of a yoke.

Do you reckon it's worth waiting for something in between this and the one that's on sale on Thursday so?

Depends on your budget and needs, it you have some heavy work the one you linked would be handy for it. But a smaller one while be better for light DIY, really down to what you need it for.
