    Hi,

If there is anyone on the forum from Raheny Shamrocks, can you please let me know where and when people meet for quality training sessions - I'm interested in speed sessions mainly i.e. intervals, tempos etc.

I recently moved into Raheny and would like to do some decent group training during midweek but not just slow long runs.

Also with the clocks going forward in a couple of weeks would there be any training in St. Anne's park on weekdays with the brighter evenings.

I'm in late thirties and have been running for many years - standard is around 38min 10k.

    Thanks a lot.

I'm with Raheny, and there'd be loads of runners around your pace for you to train with, so you'd be very welcome. I'd be about 4 mins slower than you for 10k, so you probably won't see me! :-))

You'd be better with the phone numbers on the links above rather than emailing, or come on to the Facebook page and make contact there.

People train every evening at 6.30 from the club, phone John on the number in the link and he could suggest a day that people your pace might be down. He also arranges a tempo run lots of Tuesdays - you could ask him about that too.

Speed training is Wednesdays at 6.30 on the seafront. meet at the wooden bridge at 6.30. It will be moving to Santry in the summer. Just turn up, or contact Paul or Tom. (Tom is the ladies captain and Dick Hooper is the men's (see phone number at bottom of link) but at speed Paul & Tom take most of the (mixed gender) groups and Dick Hooper takes the fastest men. So even though Dick is listed as the contact for men on the link, I'd say you would probably be in Paul or Tom's group, so maybe best to contact them re speed sessions?)

    Dick Hooper 087 2271940
    Paul Brady 086 1727118
    Tom O'Sullivan 085 1616874

Saturdays (think 10.30, or 11?) there's speed training at the mansions in St Anne's.
Look under the fixtures list on the site too -- there are 3 more races in the Winter league: tonight, in a fortnight and in a month -- coming down to the races is a really good way to get to know people and arrange to train together.
Long runs are from the clubhouse Sundays at 8am.
    Welcome!

I run by a Raheny group every Wednesday down on the coast road ( by the wooden bridge) - they're usually doing speedwork on the grass there.

They're a very friendly bunch and often ask me to join them, you could just pop down there for around 6.30 and check it out.

Or of course, email the club !

Edit - What HelenAnne says !

That's us! I'm there hanging in grimly in on of the slower groups! It's usually combinations of 200s, 300s or 400s. Join us Duanington!

Yes it's Saturdays @ 11 just beside the finish line of St Anne's parkrun. Get your weekend off to the most painful start possible :D

Another Rahney runner here, although only officially joined a few months back I have been doing the mid week races for sometime now. Great club and very welcoming to all standards. They will have no problem with you popping down for a few sessions before you officially join if that's sometime you would want to do.

The speed training at the wooden bridge is great, only a few of us down last night as most were at the 1 mile race but normally 3/4 different groups ranging from the very fast right down. You will find a group around your time now prob at all.

Did anybody follow up with this and join?

Thinking of going down myself this Wed - again, just moved to Fairvew recently myself.

These sessions will be moving out to Santry in the summer though?

    Thx

    Pros / Cons of either?

Although if Raheny training moves out to Santry in the summer that's definitely a con for me.

I've no idea if it moves to Santry. Wouldn't have thought so since they are a Raheny club. A member can advise.

Depends where you work and what training times suit. Go down to both and have a chat. Crusaders you can try for two weeks I believe.

Crusaders train on the track on a Tuesday in Irishtown, park session Thursday. Saturday morning hills or tempo in the Phoenix Park and Sunday some do a long run. Tends to be a fast pace but others join and stay together.

Thx - oh yeah it was mentioned above that they move to Santry in summer.

Where Raheny currently train on the seafront suits me, as does Wednesday sessions at 6.30 as I do my long runs on Mondays. So gives a days rest in between.

Its only the mid week speed session that moves to Santry, and only the Wednesday one the Saturday one stays in St Anne's.

If the Wednesday in Santry does not suit you would still have a normal group going out from the clubhouse.

There may not may not be loads down at the speed session tomorrow night, for 2 reasons. We had a 10 mile race yesterday so could be two soon after it for some, but we also have a 1 mile race on tomorrow night @ 20:00. I plan on doing the 1 mile race myself, it's open to everyone 7 euro reg in the clubhouse from 7:15.

I am sure there will be a few doing the speed session aswell, just it will probably be smaller than normal because of the above.

I know it says 3-mile on the fixtures list, but it's actually about 2.84 - it's a race of a specific loop rather than a normal distance. It's from Raheny taxi rank, down Watermill, along the sea front, up at Blackbanks, along the Howth Road and stop at the taxi rank.

(Just clarifying about the distance so people know).

Can every club have a notice board on the forum??

    Just wondering is all

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭HelenAnne

Damned if you do and damned if you don't -- I'm sure people would be moaning that it wasn't three miles if I didn't put up the route / distance.

I'll delete any non-relevant club-related info and leave the route, for anyone who wants to race.

have people asked questions about training times and events of other clubs? Have those threads been shut down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,896 ✭✭✭Sacksian

The OP was a non-member asking about training times. Subsequent responses have been relevant to that query.

If there's enough interest + participation, why couldn't clubs have their own threads??

In fairness, there was nothing out of order with the rest of your post. Given the discussion around noise at a minute's silence at another event recently it was no harm to mention it. Very sad event for your club & for the person's family & friends. I was at the funeral also on Sat (knew the person concerned through something else) & it was nice to see the guard of honour.

It was a genuine question. Is there demand/interest/requirement for a club notice board forum?

I actually think it could be a decent idea given that this thread has gone down well.

Absolutely no disrespect was intended towards Helen Anne's post.

I think people just know you too well at this stage Gavlor and expected your usual witty repartee! :p

I agree with you, a club forum with a separate thread for each club could be very interesting.

While I'm here, remind me how did Everton get on at the weekend? ;)

I see a good few groups of people running up the growth road each week and just saw them again this evening. Tonight there seemed to be some kind of finish line in Raheny.

Is this a shamrock group session?

Ignore this, missed the post a few back. Pity as I would have done it. Thanks

How much coach time do you get from clubs in general, and specifically Raheny Shamrocks? Is the coaching just done during the runs and workouts, i.e. telling you to run faster or fixing form, or will they recommend plans and goals for the coming weeks?

I'll be joining Raheny Shamrocks over the next weeks I'd imagine, with one of my hopes being that there'll be people casting another set of eyes over my training. I think what I'm doing is correct and ok, but it'd be nice to have someone with more experience to have a look.

Hopefully someone with more experience will step in here and answer this, but I think, as far as Raheny goes (in my experience), the sessions (Wed & Sat) are coached. We wouldn't have a coach with us on midweek runs / Sunday long runs. The coaches will do a marathon plan for you if you ask / look at your plan. (I'm sure they will do the same for other distances).

I presume the higher-level runners get more detailed coaching, and I know the sprinters etc do, but as a rank & file member, I just do whatever session is happening in the speed session, and just run any old how the rest of the week. RedRunner would be a good person to ask advice of, because I know he joined the club while already following a plan. (I just fell in with the general club week of easy runs, sessions, med/long/hill, race, LSR and it sees to work ok for me but I know other people are doing more detailed things.)

As well as the coaches being great, the most useful thing for me in Raheny (I've been with the club 5 years) has been the wealth of information from more experienced club members, the support at races etc, being on teams etc etc).

I wish I could advise but admittedly I haven't really taken advantage of the coaching pretty much because I've never attended the sessions and have usually being following my own plan or getting "coached" by the more experienced Boardsies on here who have been great sources of information.
I want to change that this year and pluck up some courage to go to the sessions. I've been to Fit 4 Life sessions before but didn't really have anyone to work off or make me work harder at those.

I'm sure though that if you seek help, you will get it no doubt. I'm just a bit shy! :o

How do the groups work pace wise?

Not sure if you are asking about the normal runs or the sessions. For the normal runs from the clubhouse at 18:30 there would normally be a good few going out each night so you would have no problem just finding a pace/group going at your pace. After a while you will just get used to who is at your level and stick with them.

As for the speed sessions, I would not be the best person to ask how they are done pace wise because I am not particularly fast and have just stayed with the slowest group since I started doing them. For your first speed session the lads will ask you if you have any recent results and maybe if you were fast you could start off with another group.

Last night for instance, there were 4 lads out, and not much else...

    The session was 3 miles easy (prob 8min pace) 4 miles @ Tempo (6:30- 6:40), 3 @ Steady (7:10 )ish....

Yep, pretty much what Dub13 says.

Im a semi regular at the Saturday session in St Annes, and in the slowest group...
Session would typically be, Dynamic warm-up for 10minutes. Followed by 300s, or 400s or 500s, or 1K reps, really depending on who is coaching.
Im doing the 400s in 75 - 85sec range, and as I say im in the slow pokes group. You can probably gauge paces from that range down to the faster stuff...

There would be slower than Mr Drak at the sessions, though. I did my 400s on grass in about 89-91 last wednesday and I was at the back of the slowest group, but some weeks there are people behind me. So anyone is welcome, even people slower than me :pac:

Oh no, we're going off topic and are going to get our wrists slapped. Should I take my reply to the Club Forum instead :):)??

(Actually, the thread title is 'New Members and Training Times' so i feel justified!)

We're going to Santry next week, session starts at 7pm, Tom said to try to be there at 6.45). (Btw, did you run 5.05 or something at the Raheny Mile??? id so, well done!)

    Hi,

The same sessions are still going on but with a few more people out on each run. The 2 Mile Summer Series starts on Tuesday, that's a great way to dip you toe into the club. I think I did 10 out of the 12 last year.

Great. Yeah might give it a look. Living in Fairview and have meant to try out the club. It's a bit up the coast but no excuse. Pros should outweigh the cons.
