To even attempt to second guess a political & military genius like Putin would be pure folly.

    All hail great leader.

With characters like Trump, Putin and Kim Jong Un we have the fruitiest basket of (potential) world leaders since ever. What a time to be alive.

They'll be back. I don't think people realise how at risk Moscow is of a terrorist attack by ISIS or people inspired by them. Apparently, there are ALOT of them in Moscow alone. We don't hear about it in western media

I sort of see him as thinking 'ok, let's show these people how to win a war'. Goes in, bombs **** out of who knows who (nobody sure whose side he's on), then goes 'alright, I've had my fun, let's go home'.

    He's mental!

Ill start you off. chechen rebels backed by saudi oil money.

When are we going to see Putin standing on the deck of a carrier with a 'Mission Accomplished' banner in Russian behind him? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,895 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

World should be getting behind the Syrian president, keep him in power, but he needs to negotiate with rebels though. Its the only way it will work.
Need to get people around table. If president does not want this then he will end up like Sadaam and Giraffi .

The problem is that he doesn't have a mission! He's just playing games.

    I imagine he's doing a few things.

    Keeping Russian costs down.

    Keeping Russian casualties down.

    Minimising mission creep.

Demonstrating to allies that 'Russia cares' and that it sees that wars are won.

Putting it up to the Syrian government to get on with making peace.

Leaving the Syrian government lose the peace.

Demonstrating to allies that they can lose the peace if they don't follow Russia's rules.

Eh no. That's exactly what he is not doing.

Russia is not a wealthy nation. It is probably too expensive to stay involved in a prolonged campaign. He has done enough to increase Russian influence in the region, which was presumably the objective.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,575 ✭✭✭✭Victor

Given that you have a rake of posts on the thread already, but have said little, what do you think he might be doing?

Getting the army back to work on a fence! Id say Assad has run out of funds to pay the Russian militia I mean military so it's go home time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,802 ✭✭✭✭suicide_circus

Go in, drop a load of bombs and get out before the really difficult stuff (negotiations and rebuilding) starts.

This way he looks like the big man without the messing.

God forgive me, but he's an awful tool.

I think he is a hero.

ISIS are on the run. Assad is strengthened and has made gains with russian support.
The air force are staying anyway to bomb the sh1t out of whoever putin wants and to bolster assad.
Putin has secured his base too.
By and large his work is done with minimal causalities and he had played the macho man card to the folks back home and won while also sticking two fingers up at Nato.

    Things we don't know:
What we don't know is what the russian negotiated with the non-IS rebels?
    if anything...

I do wonder if the kurds were encouraged to attack turkey in response to the jet shooting in recent time? who knows.

    I don't. we don't

The Russian airforce have hit and killed more civilians than the US and it's allies it Syria. They used mainly unguided weapons and even used cluster bombs in built up areas.

They are pure war crimes right there. And now they don't want to stick around for the hard part.

    says who ?
The syrian observatory for human rights?
they are a sham controlled by an anti-assad goon hellbent on overthrowing assad.
yet the western media (the main ones) quote him as if he was gospel.

I've no doubt bad things have happened on all sides , it's war. unfortunately war it like that.
The west started this by allowing their proxies in the Gulf to fund the anti-assad uprising in the beginning.
nobody comes out of this good but least of all nato and their allies.

only black Africans and a few token Balkans who wouldn't play ball have to answer for war crimes. war crimes is a joke of a concept while Tony Blair walks around calling himself a peace envoy.

But the mission was accomplished, the mission was to make Obama, Merkel and Cameron look like weak, indecisive and ineffectial fools in front of the Russian public after they fronted up to him with sanctions over the Ukraine conflict. Job done.

I actually agree with you. It smacks of trying to show the potential for the return of Russian glory days. Almost like he's trying to motivate them to regain lost territories.

Indeed, it was an explicit message for the Russian public that Russia's 'still got it' and also to send a warning to 'the near abroad' as they refer to countries like Georgia and Ukraine that the EU and NATO should not be flirted with, they are politically and militarily and weak and gutless so they can't and won't protect you, and in that regard he's dead right.
Naturally you don't want to linger too long on that message unless it gets undermined by videos of shot down Russian pilots getting beheaded which drags you into a protracted cluster**** of a war like the yanks. That and the fact that oil is getting record low prices at the moment and protracted wars are very expensive, especially for petrodollar dependent states like Russia.

If one looks at the statement, it doesn't say all troops will be removed, but the 'main part' will be withdrawn.
So Russia will still be involved, but not as visible as they have been.

    We don't really.

The whole USA = ISIS thing has been done to death... & some ministry of propaganda video doesn't add anything new.
