    Hi Everyone

Does anyone else get paid to look at boards All Day? I got this Job through a friend of a friend as an IT Coordinator (no interview required just started straight away) , i have a bit of experience with computers but that's it, I wouldn't know how to repair a PC if it just died a death and thank god nobody has came to me with this issue just yet or i will be found out (about 30 work in the office, i am the only "IT" guy) i have been asked stuff i haven't a clue about like Proxy servers, Ports and all that kind of technical stuff,

Anyway to cut a long story short, i hate it, i am sitting here bored out of my tree awaiting emails to come in and hoping i can reply with the correct answer! but the wages are pretty good (€15 an hour) but in this last week i have literally done nothing, i am bored to death, the people in here don't really communicate , they are all very serious , i love a bit of banter, , 0 of that in here, mainly because i am sat in a corner on my own, anyway rant over, i suppose it beats been on the dole and €188 a week, but there's part of me thinking i need to get out of hear and find a Job that is active for most of the Day! Does anyone else get paid for doing nothing???

The British Royals get paid for doing nothing

Maybe you could hook up with Prince William for a game of polo ..?

(head in hands) No, I get paid when your company asks you to do something you don't know how to do, you give it your best good-faith Google-assisted guess, and it goes tits up. Which is one way to learn, but not necessarily the cheapest way.

I couldn't go on like that. Sitting at a PC doing nothing all day. I spend about 60 minutes a day browsing boards but I'm kept plenty busy

Yeah nice try, boss. I'm not gonna fall for that one.

    The mods.

Look keep your head down. As you said, it's better than the dole. And tbh it's a long way from the hardship previous generations had to endure. So keep the sweet gig going, maybe try devote a bit of your day to upskilling and do frequent arse clenches to keep in shape.

You are not the only one, i know of situation where a section of a large financial institution is be delevreged from the parent company and is being sold on, however there have been load's of hold up and the section a small team of five have noting to do and have been told it will be months before it goes ahead.

Very occasionally they are asked to help another team but that is it. I know this person finds it very demotivating and is thinking of looking for another job. They told me they were so bored one day, that they spent the entire day looking up the FBI most wanted.

Why not spend the free time trying to learn the stuff you are supposed to know? You could do a bunch of online courses and stuff since you have nothing to do anyway (wouldn't know what courses to recommend, but someone else might be able to). Then when you have the actual knowledge needed to do the job properly and a bit of experience on your CV you could try moving on to a similar but more active role elsewhere.

There must be an 'IT for Dummies' book out there. You could read up on what you've been asked before and try to self-educate yourself? You're only bored out of your tree cos you're not spending your time wisely! Come on man - €15 an hour!! Make it work!!

Get a new job. You're bored because you've nothing to do and are not being challenged.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

What happens when an actual IT problem comes up, and you are caught out not actually knowing what to do?

Use your free time to do online courses related to IT support, at least use your time doing nothing to up-skill. (Which you could then use to get into a banter office ;))

Not to worry, he can pop over to Computers & Technology to get the answer.

Of course not but if you're bored then that's something which may come back to haunt you in time.

But seriously, if I had all this free time and was getting paid, I'd train myself up, plenty of free online universities with really good courses to do - including IT stuff - since you've said yourself you need to learn more.

    Check out EDX.

This doesn't surprise me in the least. It's exactly the attitude I've seen displayed by the vast majority of IT people I've had the misfortune of having to deal with. Why don't you use the spare time to make service improvements instead of reacting afterwards when someone from the profit making part of the firm has an issue with the IT systems?

Or if you have spare time then use that to educate yourself. There's a wealth of free material on sites like edx.org etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,763 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

If I was in your position I would start here: https://www.edx.org/

They deliver online courses which are compiled by colleges around the world (including the likes of Harvard etc). I know they wouldn't be a substitute for a real college degree, but you will be able to gain some knowledge in a structured way.

If you built up some knowledge in IT and started doing some personal projects on the side you could build a decent CV and challenge yourself, all while getting paid to do it.
