So I'm lying here the past hour trying to sleep, and it's just not happening (same as every other night tbh). What do you folks do when this happens?

Personally, I breathe deeply in through my nose, and out through the mouth, thinking only about breathing. I also make sure I'm breathing with my 'belly', not my shoulders. Also, as you're posting on boards, can I assume you're using a tablet/phone/something that is backlit? Avoid this for an hour before you sleep.

Again, these are just things that help me. Hope you get some shut eye soon!

I have recently started writing things into a journal. I do it throughout the day but I find at night when I can't sleep and my head is racing with thoughts is when journaling helps me.

It helps me to get the thoughts out of my head and onto paper, somehow written down, they don't seem as bad as when they are flying around my head.

I hope you manage to get some sleep soon :)

Nothing like a book to tire the eyes and slow the brain.Works for me.As an above poster said using a back lit device is not going to help.

I have three cats. They actually kind of resent that the great apes in the family sleep all night, so if I have to bundle up on the couch with a book, they are only too happy to lie all over me. As soon as the big black moggie girl gets on my chest and curls up and purrs, it is lights out for me. :)

I eventually slept at about 2, but my brain had me wide awake by 9:30! Ah, I'm used to it though.

I make sure the room is completely dark, so all devices off, no little LED lights flashing anywhere. Then I just picture a peaceful scenario, like a beach, and push all other thoughts out of my mind. Takes some practice but works for me.

I like the beach idea and it could work with a little practise, the problem is trying to not let other thoughts enter your mind also, it's like a battle is taking place in your head. At the moment I am having trouble sleeping as I think that I constantly need to go to the toilet. It's crazy stuff but I almost making myself needing to go every hour. Finding it very difficult to stop thinking about it without it creeping back in to my mind

I know this is random and I don't want to offend anyone but try saying the rosary. I guarantee you will be asleep in ten minutes!

See this doesn't work for me because A) I never want to put the book down and B) when I do put the book down, I just start thinking about the book

Can never understand why people think reading will help me sleep. Makes me worse!

You run? Increase distance. Would that work? Pool laps. I compete with roommate. She swims like fish. Exhausted am I. Sleep like dead.

I have a rain sound playlist on Youtube that I use in emergencies as I don't want to become overly reliant on it.
If that fails I just get up again or read for awhile.
