Getflix smartdns "lifetime" offer - $59

Getflix Lifetime offer avavailible for $59 , not the cheapest lifetime offer I've seen for their service. I was late to the party for the $38 lifetime on social stacks a few months back. Personally I've only used a few DNS servers mainly on a trail basis but this was my favourite one. I was going to purchase a 6 month package when I spotted this offer. Its a well supported service and I've not had any problems.

Take the "lifetime offer with a pitch of salt..... more the lifetime of the getflix company :-) I just purchased it and applied the code to my getflix account , hope to get a couple of years use maybe more from it.

    Hopefully of use to someone

Netflix are supposed to be banning VPN use soon. Also pretty sure talk of VPNs is banned on boards

Plenty of DNS and VPN offers are posted on these forums. As for Netflix, I currently don't have any problems but Netflix is not the main reason I use DNS. I use it to access UK tv catch up service on device's such as my LG tv or my NOWTV boxes.... plenty of people would be doing the same.

Someone told me the other day that DNS and VPN services slow down your broadband, is this true anyone?

As a user of getflix. The last few days there has been and issue connecting to US Netflix. May be fixed but maybe not the best time to sign up to these services.

What settings do you need to change on now tv and smart tv's to get the bbc iplayer app to work or how can it be done

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,705 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

In a humax box, you trick it into needing manual settings and then put in these dns settings. Some boxes you can do it in settings.
Are these particular ones a pain for those of us with dynamic IP addresses? I found cactus a pain for that

Generally much easier to change the settings on your router which will then effect all of the devices connected to it rather than changing each device one by one.

Depends on a number of things, not least the quality of the vpn service or whether you are using a vpn or dns service. Free ones will generally give very poor results.

With good quality service you should see little or no noticeable difference.

At the risk of sounding all tin foil hat, do you really want a company like these knowing all your traffic details as opposed to just a media device looking up players.

Some routers let you pick and select what devices use the DNS service. Personally I just set the router to use the Getflix DNS and then set the 2 devices (one pc and one laptop) which I use for online banking/payment to use Google/Open DNS from network setting. No traffic is routed through getflix for these .

Does the Humax retain the settings after reboot?

Yeah, doesn't bother me at all.

Yes, it gives you a choice to connect manually or automatically.

Assume one thing: if it ain't encrypted, all Internet sees it anyway.

    Hi,

When I point my NowTV box to their DNS server, and reboot, it fails to connect to the internet? Would this be due to the associated account which was registered via my irish ISP and then sky now see the ip address has changed?

    Thanks
    W

PS: I can get the smart dns to work on the likes of windows clients etc...
PPS: Its to do with my router setup...please ignore my post

Netflix is extremely active in blocking such services. Even if it works for couple of days, it will soon be blocked again.

I'm considering dropping Netflix for AIV. Amazon has HDR support on my tv but Netflix doesn't.

  • Will this work for the BBC iPlayer?

The BBC is working on linking the iPlayer to TV licences. No idea when it'll be implemented or how.

Be mindful that these services are going out of business everyday the last while. ViperDns offered great year long liciences but then vanished within 2 or 3 months of me buying the offer. Surprise surprise, I got no refund.

Also no one can promise you Netflix US for any time period unless they have a team of people working 24/7 on it. Netflix is updating it's protections every 2 days right now. It's impossible for any cheap/moderately paid service to keep up.

I'd be very reluctant to part with cash on anything more than a monthly basis with any of them right now.
This looks like one final shakedown before these guys bow out with your money.

To be fair to Getflix they've stopped listing Netflix as a service they support.

    Anyone else ?

as far as i know smart dns just send some info via their servers.
your normal browsing should not go through it.

    It is not that simple...

    - each DNS query goes through GetFlix DNS servers. They might be slow to respond, but this should not have a huge impact, as DNS data is cached on client side.

    - when using ISP DNS (the one you get through DHCP) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4), they are aware of where you are coming from and resolve the names to the closest server. Netflix.com will be resolved differently if accessed from Ireland and from US. AFAIK GetFlix always returns the same resolution - so one might get slower access to those services.

Everything definitely seemed slow for an hr or two but then returned to normal. On their fb some people were complaining of their servers being slow around the same time. All seems ok now though. I'll give it the two weeks and see how it goes.

Sure you have no idea what traffic they are redirecting or to what end, I personally wouldn't trust a company owned by a turkish petrol station owner with my data. Apparently he 'just subscribed to getflix' himself  https://twitter.com/efecakinberk

Encrypted traffic is safe. Unencrypted never is, regardless if you're using proxy or not.

Anyone know of the best between all of these:
    overplay, unlocator, unblockus

    In terms of:
    speed/reliability
what services work on them (netflix, iplayer etc)

Nobody will work reliably for Netflix once Netflix started to actively fight such services. Forget about it.

Yeah, a company used all over the world should change their name because their service changes slightly. That's a good business plan.

Why keep the name getflix if it doesn't work for netflix? It's just misleading people
