so i was thinking of buying this for the last few months, at 40 euro...ish it was good value. but when i walked into currys this evening and seen it for 19.50 i sez to myself "buy it"! so i did. now i have to see if i can get my flac files on pc to stream to my amplifier.

remember kids, this deal runs until monday only. so be quick.

Is there any benefit to using this over say, a bluetooth receiver, which would probably be cheaper?

You're less restricted by range, since you're using your wi-fi rather than Bluetooth. Also, your Wi-fi should give you a more stable connection with faster transfer rates than bluetooth, but for audio, the practical difference here is minimal.

Because both the chromecast and your phone/tablet are connected to the wi-fi, you don't need to "pair" them like you do for bluetooth.

Overall - if you have a good, reliable bluetooth receiver, I wouldn't be throwing it out to replace with Chromecast. If you're starting from scratch, go for it.

I think €40 is a lot for Chromecast audio but €20 is a good deal.

hmm, do i really need this in addition to the portable bluetooth speakers dotted around the house, the bluetooth receiver connected to the old hifi. the dlna and other wireless receivers in the soundbar, amp, and whatever other device has this "feature", the bluetooth wireless headphones...all purchased because of bargain alerts or richersounds forums?

    of course i do.

Ha! I'm in exactly the same boat.

Desperately trying to think up some use for this so I can justify to the wife why I've bought yet more electronic stuff.

I own one already - it's a sweet little device and a breeze to set up. Definitely at €20 it's a bargain if you have any sort of stereo or speakers that could do with being "smartened". Just one thing to bear in mind is that they need to be plugged into the mains. I don't need to do this with my other chromecast - it's powered off the USB port on the TV.

Buy 2 as it also supports multiroom :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,213 ✭✭✭utyh2ikcq9z76b

Yous need it for this bargain price, turn any old set of speakers smart, works better than Bluetooth as it has WiFi, it takes the audio stream straight from the net, your phone can then be used for other procrastinating stuff.Google music give 50,000 tracks storage for free so upload all your audio and this will work great with it!

+ Audio will be far better than bluetooth as not as much compression

    What's its power source?

Micro USB, it comes supplied with a cable and a wall adapter. But if whatever you are plugging it into has a USB port you can use that instead.

I found that there was less noise when using the chromecast power supply than using the usb port on the soundbar/TV. I imagine it's designed for low noise, or else it's just better quality :)

Ok, stupid question time. Could I use a couple of these to make a cheap-ish multi room audio setup?
Would you need an amp between the Chromecast and the speaker?

Hi-Fidelity. Chromecast Audio now supports 96KHz/24bit lossless audio playback and multi room.

Even more to love about Chromecast Audio
    Thursday, December 10, 2015

A couple of months ago we launched Chromecast Audio to provide an easy way to stream your favorite tunes from your phone, tablet, or laptop to your existing speakers. At $35, Chromecast Audio is an affordable way to connect your speakers via WiFi so you can stream tons of popular apps including Spotify, Pandora, and Google Play Music from anywhere in your home. Today we’re starting to add two new features to the latest software update to elevate your listening experience.

    Introducing Hi-Res audio support

Close your eyes and imagine the musician is playing in the room. Today we’re rolling out high-resolution audio support, which gives you even higher quality music playback using Chromecast Audio. With support of up to 96KHz/24bit lossless audio playback, you can enjoy higher-than-CD-quality audio on your existing high fidelity audio equipment.

Blast the same song in every room

Now you can easily fill every room in your home—bedroom, kitchen, living room, or wherever you have a Chromecast Audio connected—with synchronous music. Multi-room lets you group Chromecast Audio devices together so you can listen to the same song on multiple speakers. Setup is simple. Connect and setup a Chromecast Audio device for each of your speakers, then use the latest Chromecast app to create a group. You can cast to the group the exact same way you would cast to a single Chromecast device. Since anyone with a phone can easily cast without pairing, you can sync your home speakers together and invite your friends to be the DJ. So grab your hairbrush microphone, dust off your tennis racket guitar, and jam out to your favorite tunes at amazing quality and in every room of your house.

I presume that I need an aux in for it to work on any old speakers. A lot of old stereo units I have only seem to have headphone jack

You need an 'IN' as you guessed. AUX IN would do it, either 3.5mm or RCA. Optical input requires extra hardware. Headphone jack is only 'OUT'.

I got one a couple of weeks ago. I have an old sony hifi that skips , and I was going to get a new one, but when I looked at the costs I decided to get the chromecast audio.
It was very easy to set up, and I am a HUGE fan or the normal chromecast, but ..
When playing tracks from spotify that were already downloaded on my ipad or android phone the audio kept on turning off even though it looked like it was still playing on the device. :( I was in a room far away from the router, but none of the kids were on netflix so there was no big internet use in the house.
I'll try it again. I remember when I got the video chromecast first it took a while for it to work as good as it does now.
I wonder is it because i downloaded the audio as the highest quality possible from spotify.
did anyone else have a similar experience?

Dam this is tempting even though I don't really "need" one. I have Denon Heos wireless system already that I use spotify connect with. One of these would be a nice addition though

Same here .... I think I want one. I KNOW I want one...

BUT what will I do with it!!

Like above... Am a child of the 80's and haven't look at the rear of my Technics Stack System since 1989! Would it be a case of plugging into one of the /red/white or yellow slots at the back??

In case anyone is dismissing this due to a lack of a streaming music subscription like Spotify, there are plenty of apps that support it, such as Allcast, BubbleUPNP, Plex etc. They will use this as a receiver, allowing you to play any local (or network-shared) MP3s.

Unfortunately it's apparently not DLNA certified, so if you have an app in mind for playing your stuff, check if it's supports Chromecast.

It is if you want to subscribe to their streaming service but you can add your own catalogue to their cloud and access them for no charge.

No. I have ripped all my stuff to flac, uploaded them to Google and hey presto, music anywhere. There is a charge for something like Spotify, but not your own music.

Back in the 80s I had to walk around with loads of tapes in my pocket. I always dreamed of something like this! Now I'm living in the future. Good times.

Does Google Music support FLAC now? Previously they converted them to MP3.

These didn't sell anywhere near the amount Google were hoping. The store I work in was always sold out of the original Chromecast, no one wanted the audio!

Picked up a second one today, as the price was too good to pass.

    Multiroom listening works great.

Yeah, it's a nice idea for those with existing audio setups - but the potential market is way smaller than that of the Chromecast. I use a Sonos already, but otherwise would definitely get one.

I thought google music re-encoded flac to mp3 when you upload it? I read that a few times, but must admit it was a while ago and I didn't try it myself, so I'm curious as opposed to making a statement.

That aside, I just saw on OOTD that in the UK argos are pricematching the Chromecast Audio with Currys, so I guess that they might do the same here. It may also only be in-store. It doesn't seem to be on the website anyway. http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/4989581.htm

I just bought two there and was charged €39. Didn't see any mention of 2 for 29 anywhere.
