If you have FTA Sat (possibly On Sky too) you can get the BIKE channel. I stumbled across it by accident when I had to re-tune some channels. Currently showing Tour of Oman but will be doing other live racing plus repeats from 2015 (Closing stages of Tour of Lombardy on at the moment of posting) and MTB , documentaries & magazine type content. There is a Greatest Climbs programme with Paulo Savoldelli and another rider. Heart rate and power date shown on screen the whole time. It's worth a look if you can get it. Details on frequency:

    Channel Label ID: 52290
    Frequency: 11.306gHz
    Polarity: Horizontal (H)
    SR 27.500
    FEC 2/3

Decent enough channel, but the picture quality is shocking (or maybe I am just use to watching HD channels for sport, Sky, BT etc)

Should be interesting to see if they show current year races once the season gets going

Nice one thanks! Just got it tuned in and picture quality is grand.

Wouldn't think so but I'm not an expert. I have a combo box for Saorview + Satellite and it's from the satellite feed that I got it.

    I forgot, I had satellite.
    Got it, thanks.
    Reception is perfect.

I don't have a HD box to bench mark against, but it could never be a match for HD. It's standard def and the same as the other standard channels, incl Eurosport.

They showed amazing live coverage of the Cape epic last weekend.

For a channel which is so low key they have some seriously good tele. Where the trail ends was shown last weekend too, incredible stuff.

    Free to air too,great channel!

Just spotted it on the Freesat EPG, must have only been in the last day or two. Knew it was FTA, but now it means no more serching after retunes, and listings now for the next 7 days instead of now and next.

Just decided to switch over during the ads in the Vuelta to catch the Brussels Cycling Classic

Is it usual to have no commentary with the only sound being the motorbikes and helicopters providing coverage (with a bit of interference from the radios of the motorbike riders)?

Just switched over, commentary is there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,384 ✭✭✭Kaisr Sose

Thought the 'noise' was weird and kind of invasive, then commentary started. Background sounds still there but not as annoying with voice over. Good win! Showing the Tour of Fordes (Denmark) too. Not bad - all free!

Watched 2 Italian guys doing some big climb on BIKE yesterday. Their banter translated to English was hilariously awful. Total cringe.

Just got round to watching this weeks Incycle. Good interviews with Chris Froome, Anna Vander Breggen and Chad Haga. Fascinating insight into Haga trying to recover from the mental side of racing after the crash. That scar on his neck is something else.

Its the only show I watch regularly on Bike TV. It's very well done.

Is the tour of Britain shown anywhere else on the TV but this channel. I still cant believe in this day and age people are still not broadcasting in HD!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭outfox

    ITV4

It's free — you pay for sky and Eurosport HD. IMO HD is no biggie for cycling coverage.

ITV4, but not HD. Would've said with all the signal breakup/ poor quality base pictures, HD wouldn't be a massive addition tbh.

Nightly highlights on ITV4 too, so 7-9 is vuelta and then Tour of Britain. Tour of Britain had a tough task following that stage yesterday though!

Cant believe ye think HD isn't a biggie for cycling coverage!!! Its a massive addition, It really stinks watching it in non HD so much so ill turn it off......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,556 ✭✭✭Macy0161

Actual pictures when there's supposed to be coverage and reliable time gaps would be bigger issues for me when it comes to TV coverage tbh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭ht9zni1gs28crp

ok so, I presume it would also be acceptable in black and white?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,556 ✭✭✭Macy0161

Yeah, because black and white v colour is exactly the same as SD v HD....

For the Tour of Britain, you can subscribe to a platform that has ITV4 HD. For other races you can subscribe to Eurosport HD.

Bike are generally showing races that wouldn't normally have English language coverage (for the most part), so for me SD Free To Air compared to a dodgy sporza stream is progress, and not something I'm that arsed to complain about no HD.

Yep! You just need one of these and you can convert it to Colour! (apparently)

Explains it all really there.....not used to HD experience.

Apart from the free ones, which is 10-11 at this stage. And bluray. Of course, never been in a house that has sky hd. But apart from that...

HD just isn't my biggest issue with cycling coverage at this point in time. If I had the choice, I'd pick HD, like most, but I'd rather have the FTA coverage to watch in SD, than not have the coverage full stop.

You have the option of subscription based services for HD cycling on Sky/ Eurosport, which would also get you ITV4HD as other channels - so knock yourself out if it's such a big issue for you.

The Correct answer is Yes...Cycling is Broadcast in HD and is available to view in HD via a number of different sources.

But...be careful what you wish for...it may not belong before FTA channels are retired and we're left with nothing but Pay-Per-View HD Tv!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭ht9zni1gs28crp

Its not a big issue for me at all dude, your the one with the craw in your neck about HD and paying for a decent service......all I asked for was another option in HD....

which incidentally you provided as I hadn't a clue ITV4HD were showing it too....

Saw one like that on it a couple of weeks ago. I think one of the two is Paolo Salvodelli, dual Giro winner and client of a certain doctor.

Not for me. I would rather have something, than nothing. You can enjoy something but no enjoyment comes from having nothing.. :D

Disagree. You could do worse watching this programme on a cold winter night while on the indoor trainer. I rode some of those climbs and would like to ride more of them. For that alone it's good viewing. Seeing the PM and HR data live is a nice feature!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭outfox

Yeah, the footage was good alright. Better with the volume down though.

Made quite a splash in his day when he organised a bike race in France...

In the one I saw it was not so much the dialogue as the deadpan dubbed voiceover that killed it.
At one stage during an exchange on cassette ranges, Salvodellu said something like "these days I only use the eleven for changing the wheel" which made me smile, given that he seems to have "wintered well" since retirement.
