    Anyone doing this?

It was a nightmare last year with the weather, but properly prepared it would be a good day out. It was well marshalled etc Great food before and after.

I'm down for the 110km, as I lack sense.

I'll be bring about three pairs of gloves this time though! :)

Thanks, I think. Booked in for the 110, but I've never done more than 50 and never cycled with a group - am I nuts?

    Not far from me.
Newbies welcome ? Most I've done is 46 so far, on new bike late January.
No real fear of trying, just no clue of the "rules" as such, ie etiquette, group riding etc

If it was 50km uphill you'll be grand if not you may want to find a few hills :)

    Nice spin all the same.

Haven't done this one for a few years.
Might dust off the passport and head down for this one.

This is quite hilly, a lot of up and down roads. The bit around the Blessington Lakes and the Glen of Imail are quite hard if you're not used to climbing short steep stuff, so I'd recommend getting out to those two areas, or similar. Might be an idea also to try to join a club or a group and get used to riding with other people, and at the same time try to gradually push out your distance, maybe add an extra 10 km per-week to your long spin (though it's really more about time than distance). It's a good event, the food stops are excellent and it's well marshalled. The lads at the front will treat it as a race, but there's normally a very good turnout, so there will be plenty of groups scattered along the road and finding one at the correct pace should be easy enough.

I just signed up for the 110km route – it asked me about a Cycling Ireland licence, does anyone know if we need one or have to pay for a one day licence? There was no option to pay for one during registration!

Cant wait for this now, hopefully the weather is decent for it! :)

    Thanks for that
I actually live on part of the route so have, and will do as you suggest.
Any recommendations re local club ? I know of a few, but no idea which would be best/suit me. 42 just retired from ball
    Tks again all

Reservoir cogs are up around that area supposed to be a good club also Naas cc which has a load of members 9f all abilities.

The foothills were alive with the sound of chain lash as nearly five hundred cyclists took on the first of the three tours that Naas Cycling Club will host in 2011. Rumours in the peloton that Julie Andrews was spotted running down a slope near Hollywood were later discounted. But there was no doubt that good weather, a challenging route and a great welcome home are A few of our favourite things. hah

Naas CC is a good club, they have a lot of members and usually 3-4 groups of varying abilities (with distances to match) on weekends. I think their FB page has all the details.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭ezra_

The Cogs have a group that goes out on a Sunday and will do 50k or so with some hills.

I've seen a lot of Naas jerseys in the area on a sunday also so I'm sure they have something similar.

One of those I missed out on last year due to a broken ankle. I think I had signed up to it and all so will do so again this year. Might stick to the 50k though as I've barely completed 250k in total this year so far. :)

Naas Cycling Club have re-started their Fáilte Spins. A good place to learn the basics of group ride with eventual graduation up to the main groups on a Sunday Morning.

Strongly recommend this. A group of us have been doing it for the last few years as our official start of the Sportif Season. Very well organised and not too tough a route if you take it handy. You can also decide to stop at the Ballyknockan food stop and do the 65k or continue on to Donard for the full 110k. Was tempted last year when my hands froze but most other years the weather has been grand.

Went to book last week to find the online entry (and chance to win a GoPro) was closed but it is back now with a €2 admin fee. Still cheaper than paying on the day. There doesn't seem to be a reduction for having a CI licence which is a bit odd.

Is it the opposite direction to last year or am I losing it?

Think it has always headed for Blessington first and then round the lake. Same again this year as far as I can see.

What is the route like in terms of hills? Trying to get my bearings. Have down the route around the lakes before. Is that it or are there any Long Hill type hills?

Thinking of going for this also - question is; I've never done north of 80k, but there is nothing on that route that I wouldn't have done during a 70-80k cycle.

No bother to you so.Just pace yourself and avail of the food stops.

At the turn for Valleymount you can either go for the long one, or go right, for the 65km one.

Quite a few people for the 110 ended up doing the 65 last year if I recall correctly.

The weather was a bleedin' nightmare. Very high wind chill factor. My hands got so cold I thought I was going to cry at one stage. :o

I should have gone right last year but went left. Toughest cycle in a while, glad I completed it though!

This looks very similar to a route I did with my dad, it's not super climby but the climbs that are there are sharp and stacked.

Weather aside it shouldn't be beyond anyone moderately bike fit to get through the 110 but you might feel the occasional spot of dismay.

Also the Glen of Imaal rewards 28mm tyres.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,305 ✭✭✭Mercian Pro

Also the Glen of Imaal rewards 28mm tyres.

The worst stretch used to be the back road between Hollywood and Donard but this year's route avoids that and follows the N81. Shouldn't have any trouble with 23 or 25mm tyres once you stay alert.

Yep, I did that route a few weeks ago, bit of a climb into Donard (nice prep for the climb out of it) but the road is fine. The Hollywood glen route is a beautiful, but the surface is rubbish.

However, the descent on the way down towards the glen isn't great, but i've never had any issues with 25s so long as you keep your wits about you.

I did it on 25s on my good bike. It would have been more comfortable on my steel frame with 28s is all.

Tempted to sign up, with the 60-80k roundtrip commute to/from Naas it'd be a mostly supported overthrow of my 150km previous max distance.
