Hi all, currently drive an 03 corolla with about 170000 miles on the clock!. Looking to get a car for 10k that will accommodate 3 young kids fairly easily.

For about 9 months of the year i would drive in excess of 600 miles a week, the rest about 150 miles or less a week. Looking for something solid, reliable and economical that will last me a few years. Pretty clueless about cars so any advice would be appreciated!

a Toyota corolla verso 2.2 diesel might fit the bill.

Bought a Dacia Sandero 1.5 diesel last November, €13100 pre registered 6kms on clock, cant fault it, very good on fuel with the eco button on. Depending on what you get on your trade in you might be able to stretch to one.

but a sandro is a supermini. it's smaller than the corolla.

I thought they looked pretty small in the photos. Verso looks a good option, is the tax a bit cheaper in the post 08 versions? Around €690 for some 08 versions I looked at, although these were petrol.

With a 03 corolla with 170k on the clock, they probably end up getting it for nothing.

You would get a 2010-12 mondeo at that price range. Decent space. Parts that wouldn't cost a second mortgage. Tax around €200. Heres a 2012 https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/ford-mondeo-1-6-tdci-eco-edge-115ps/10925572

In 2013 I had a 2010 Toyota avensis t4 estate, flat floor in the rear so fits three kids perfect, huge boot and came with more standard extras than any Merc or bmw I've owned due to being the t4 model !!! Could not fault it one bit and had a great sat nav, phone, hdd entertainment system built in. Honestly look them up they are a brilliant car and A Toyota is always reliable

No good for families with three kids as they only have 2.5 seats in the back.

I had the previous model and had no problem comfortably fitting a child seat, a 7 and 11 year old in the back. Did they make the seats smaller for this model?

Tax for the corolla verso was cc based in early 08, in July 08 they changed to emissions tax which was more expensive, the newer model just called the verso had cheaper tax in petrol than the old model.

The 08 onwards verso and Corolla verso all had relatively small tax in diesel.

Have to disagree there, plenty of space in back for 3.
Great car for distance driving, great boot space, rock solid on road. Push for the 2.0, 140 ps if you can. I had 43 mpg on mine after 4 years with a lot of 130 kph motorway. There was a mini facelift version around 2012.
Make sure timing belt is done if buying one near 120k miles on it or else factor in the cost.

more space in a mondeo, i just got one and they are very spacious, the boot is very big perfect for a family, i have a car seat in the back and can easily get two kids in next to it
as previous poster has said the 2 litre 140 bhp is the one to go for
not a fan of the note at all but thats just my opinion

Will i get 2 car seats & a booster seat in a Mondeo? Are Notes reliable. Just saw i have done 30k miles in the last year. Looked as some versos but most are 08 petrols.

Depends on the car seats really
I've had two in mine and a booster in the middle it was a squeeze but my sons seat is huge in comparison to others
Grand c-max is bigger, I was torn between the two

Not sure about the note and reliability, check some online reviews, a few car buyer guide sites have videos showing you all the pros and cons

Any thoughts on these two? Are grand scenic as unreliable as they say? Certainly economical.

Having driven toyota for so long I'm drawn to the verso. Would this Scenic take another 100K miles?

The newer scenic is supposed to be a lot better.

That verso seems too good to be true tbh. I'd be checking it carefully, obv it's a uk import, mileage is very low. The 2.2 engine in those wasn't toyotas finest hour, but the 135PS version like what's in that one didn't seem to be as troublesome as the higher powered versions of that engine.
    Low mileage car from new
    Love it.

How could i check the mileage? Would a 08 Scenic count as a newer one?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

No, the newer scenic looks completely different to that one.

You could check the uk mileage on the UK MOT website for free, you'll need the uk reg number. The scenic looks to be on uk plates still, and for the verso, it will be listed on the registration cert of the car. If the car is genuine, I can't see why they wouldn't give you the uk reg so you can do your own checks.
You could do a paid report using the Irish reg number of course, cartell, motorcheck etc, these should tell you if the car was a write-off abroad too.

I used to sell them. The higher bhp one is called a T180 rather than a T-Spirit, which that one is.
Those diesel versos are lovely to drive for an MPV, There's a lovely chunk of mid range power in them.

Need to fit 1 booster seat and two child seats in the back. Wont fit in the corolla. And the price of petrol is killing me.

I'm not sure that you'd be able to get everyone in the middle row of the Kia. Not a bother if you want to use one of the rearmost seats, the seat looks to be one piece As opposed to 3 individual seats in the likes of a verso.

black verso looks nice and reasonably priced too does the grey/silver one have a dent on the drivers side ?
when i was looking for a car i found this company

    http://www.mordauntgroup.com/used-cars/Toyota/Verso/2.0-Pan/146014246982042840/

if thats a little over budget they will find one to suit your budget, only reason i did not go ahead with them they wouldnt take my 308 as a trade, he had 6 of them already

Speaking from experience of owning a 2010 Mondeo for the past two years, id highly recommend one. Ive had experience with BMW, AUDI, VW, ALFA, OPEL, Peugeot mid to large family cars and I'm very impressed with the Mondy. Nicer to drive than the same year passat (had an 09 one) and more reliable than any VW or AUDI. The skoda superb or octavia are good bets too. My auld fellas Octavia is bullet proof. 4 years of ZERO trouble.

Honda accord are another great bet, but expensive.

While I don't disagree, be prepared for some hefty depreciation if you get one.

i make you right citreon and peugeot are a disaster when selling on for some reason, i had a picasso and couldnt give it away and my peugeot 308 was a nightmare to trade in, most dealers didnt even give me a price
toyota verso or ford mondeo galaxy or cmax are the safest bet

The reviews on reliability has put me off these, especially the push button handbrake! Still an option though, would like some degree of sell on value in a few years.

Apart from Skoda hitting the top of the reliability lists all the time, they seem to be better built than their cousins (built in a different factory in Czeck Republic afaik). They also mostly use the tried and tested engines that have been running in VW and Audi for a few years. The bugs have been worked out by the time they hit the Skoda brand.

Ive heard of (and experienced) some catastrophic failures in newer VW (my own experience was on a 1.4 TSI passat 2009, some of my gearbox making an exit through an inspection hatch, having had the car back to the dealers 3 times in as many months with separate issues)

Kia Ceed estate. You can find a 2010 for about 9 grand.

A lot of those lists are satisfaction surveys and Skoda owners generally have lower expectations that VW/Audi drivers.

Maybe years ago, but nowadays they're all on current platforms. Reliability/satisfaction surveys can be skewed by the demographic.

    Thats true.

But from my own experience, and others I have spoken to, I'm personally keeping away from VW and Audi for now. I have had two VWs and both had serious issues. My old man has an octavia for the last 4 years and has put tires and break pads/disks on it. That plus servicing it.

His driving style does not vary to much from my own (spirited with an eye on mechanical sympathy). His mileage per year is lower than mine alright, but not hugely.

Maybe it is an expectation thing. maybe people who but a VW expect flawlessness. They are certainly not flawless, or close to it.
