    evening all ,
we are currently restoring a ford 5030 four wheel drive tractor ,
she needs a lot of welding on the bottoms of the doors , foot wells , floor inner wings and a few other areas ,
the plan is to repair any bad bits and restore her back to as good as new if possible ,
new outer wings have been sourced and all the cladding and new seat have also been sourced ,

she is mechanically good but may need a few gaskets etc here and there ,
we are also painting a fiat 110-90 at the same time so the workshop is kind of busy but this job was on the cards from last year but we are only getting stuck into her now due to time constraints ,

i started off the other day by removing the bonnet , grille and nosecone and then soaked her in an ample amount of jizer to shift the grime , next job is to get the bonded windows out and whip the doors off and see how bad the rot has progressed into the cab floor ,
some pictures of the progress so far .

she came up nice with the washing , my ould crystal supplied the horses to run the power hose , done her no harm to knock a few of the cobwebs out of her !

sorry for all the questions but how available are parts for these now? much in common with earlier models? would CNH dealers still have some bits?

ask away lad i will try to help as much as possible , i do know the owner of the tractor has been getting most of the new replacement genuine parts from o,brien tractors in bunninnaden co.sligo , they are the main new holland dealers around here , he also sourced some parts like the interior trim and seat cushions from the north , i will find out more when im chatting him next .

Cheers. Did a 4000 and 5000 a few years ago and know there is a large amount of stuff being remade for them and was just wondering if the 5030 shared many parts.

we spent most of today stripping out the cab on the ford to see what extent the rust had gotten in to the floors , i also took off the doors which was a bugger of a job as the pins had seized solid and we couldn't shift them at all , tried to cut the top off the pins and got up on the roof of the cab to hit them down the way but this would not work either , so in the end we had to cut the pins altogether with a very thin disc on the 4" grinder in through the small gaps in the hinges and knock the pins out when we got the doors off !!!
we have mcgurn plant glass coming early next week to put the windscreen and door glass into the fiat so i am going to get him to remove all the glass in the ford cab while he is there , it is bonded in and i don't want to start breaking glass trying to get them out .
i also removed the pick up hitch and lift arms ready for another more extensive washing when the cab comes off .
anyway we are well on the way to getting the cab off the ford now and all that's left to loosen is the linkages and disconnect the pipes to the power steering and heater matrix , i will have more detailed pictures of this as we progress

few pics of yesterdays progress .

Can I come work for you? Would be great to work on machines to that standard each day!! :) Sadly, apart from the few vintage machines, most tractor work is just keeping them going

love to have you down bob , could always use a spare pair of hands , i think the attention to detail is really setting us apart and paying off , but as i always say " if you cant do it properly don't do it at all !! "

i understand what you are saying about the work involved in keeping tractors going but i could never understand how a farmer would go out and pay close to €50,000 ( or the equivalent of that sum back in the 70's or 80' ) to wreck it and abuse it and hop it off walls and ditches and never grease or lubricate or service the blasted thing , surely its a false economy spending that kind of money and letting it run into the ground due to poor maintenance then getting someone like to us to try to bring her back to life so to speak and spend another few pound doing so ??? doesn't make sense but that's Ireland for ya i guess .:confused:

Absolutely on the money... Irish mentality is bizarre in this sense.

I'd agree on the whole "do it properly" philosophy. I hate seeing badly 'restored' machines. Some people are very hard on working tractors too and don't see the value in keeping them to a certain standard. That or let the 16 year old nephew off in them who drives the sh1te out it because he likes to see the shmoke...

    Keep up the good work!

so Saturday update time on the ford , we wanted to get the cab off today and she what was lurking underneath , we had a lot of stubborn corroded nuts and bolts to deal with but the usual amount of cursing soon shifted them , we have the window man coming on Monday to remove all the bonded glass and then the grinding and cutting can start in earnest , anyway some pictures that i managed to snap really quickly while all was dangling in mid air ha ha .

came off handy enough after all , just had to keep a close eye on the linkages for the gear selectors , its handy the way the steering box comes with the cab too , you just have to disconnect four hydraulic pipes underneath , we then started to strip off any ancillary bits to get her ready for cleaning down .

how much height would you need in a shed to lift the cab off like that. you have a great setup in fairness

thanks lad , just by chance that main beam in the shed is high enough , i guess its around 20 - 25 ft high , the block and tackle is handy cos you can take it slow and make sure you are not pulling any pipes or wires on the way up . not sure what kind of weight it would support though , the ford cab is heavy with all the glass in it but hopefully when we have it done we will refit it without the glass and get that fitted afterwards to make thing easier to manage . ;):):)

some of the bolts holding in the centers are in poor shape so we will have to see about getting new ones to replace them , we could not loosen one despite heat and plenty of brute force so she had to get the grinder .

hello everyone , im finally back with an update on the ford , we had a family medical situation which has thankfully been resolved and we are starting to get back on our feet , i will be finishing the ford on my own so progress will be slow and steady from now on , thankfully the brother managed to get all the welding and metal fab done and i am now slowly trawling through all the wire brushing , i have managed to burn out two 4" grinders and numerous wire brushes in the process but needs must and i think i have the back broke on it now , i still have the bonnet and panels and also the exterior of the cab to sand by hand but im getting there , i have a good few photos to put up so bear with me as they are scattered out over the last three or four weeks so its hard to get them all in order but ill try , first up is the metal fab on the cab , cutting out and patching all the rusty bits and cutting out the old rotten floor pieces at the door , we got new bits formed on a press and they look very similar to the original piece .

next job was to swap out a noisy power steering pump , a new replacement was sourced but i discovered a slight difference in the pump housing when i was re-assembling so it had to be changed again , the pictures will shed more light on this .

the new proper pump is fitted in the last picture using the old oil reservoir , another job that had to be tackled was the fans in the roof were seized so i stripped out the fan unit and the motors and the search is now on for a replacement set .

i also replaced the rocker cover gasket as there was a wee weep of oil coming from it , in fairness there isn't a drop of oil under her anywhere apart from the wee leak , very dry tractor for her age .

so then it was time to get stuck in to the mammoth task of wire brushing each individual part , i segregated them into " blues " and " blacks " to make it a bit easier and the hospital stretchers were put to good use ha ha ( needed one myself after all was done )

the eagle eyed of you will notice the " flip up " PTO cover as a new piece , it was sourced from the UK last week and will make a nice safety addition to the tractor , you may also notice that the brushed parts look very white , that is the metal prep that i coat them with after brushing it seals the metal and the rust and leaves it clean ready for a wipe of panel wipe before painting .

i got the roof stripped down and started cleaning it too , it is a bit shook in the corners so it will need a bit of work , i managed to save the sound proofing foam off the inside of the roof and i can re-glue it back on when shes painted .

wire brushing all the bits is a unique form of torture :). nobody local doing sandblasting?, if only to do the heavy stuff that the blasting would have no chance of causing damage to.

you are so right lad , and would you believe we have our own sand blasting pot but haven't got around to getting any type of media for blasting plus the ould fella is always giving off about the mess it makes so its just easier to wire brush and not listen to the chewing afterwards ha ha .:pac:

then i cleaned everything with panel wipe and stuck the tins of primer into a bucket of boiling water ( a neat tip i got from a professional painter ) , thins the paint out better and leaves it easier to mix and spray on , i also wet the floor before i started to keep some of the bloody dust down !

there is roughly three coats maybe more on all of it , used all of three liters of primer , im using a new polish product that comes with a separate little bottle of hardener or activator that you mix into each liter as you go , seems to go on very well and im happy with the results

that's it for now until i get back at it during the week , i still have the cab and the doors to rub down by hand and then all the umpteen bits and pieces including the cab etc have to be primed so be prepared for a lot of pictures of grey parts , depending on how i get on i might be able to start spraying either the blue or the black next weekend .

so today it was more priming and the plan was to get most of the black bits done , first job was to get everything hung up and get everything wiped down and cleaned with panel wipe , then i started priming in earnest , three liters of primer later and here are the results .

when the primer had dried i applied a 50/50 mix of body shuts / wax oil to the underside of the cab and the inner wings , also the inside of the new mudguards .
