    Hi there...

Have 2 polytunnel frames on the smallholding recently got hands on... no plastic at all on them... just the frame... which is in perfect shape and structurally sound....

Wanting to get them covered... any tips on who could get to come and cover it for me? Will most decent polytunnel companies do it for me?

    Any good ones recommended?

    i am based in Wicklow.

Mixture of crops inside... would people recommend leaving bottom 2-3feet mesh rather than plastic?

    Cheers

We built two polytunnels from parts last year - we bought the kits from firsttunnels.co.uk.

I would not use mesh on the bottom unless your tunnel is very long. e.g. our main tunnel is 48 ft long with two double doors at each end, and gets plenty of ventilation. A tunnel longer than 50 ft might need mesh but anything shorter, and the mesh will simply make the tunnel colder than necessary. That is if you are able to get to the tunnel regularly to open and close the doors. If you only get to the tunnel on weekends, mesh might make sense, but early and late in the season you will want a way to cover it in order to keep more of the warm air in.

One other tip - one of our tunnels has an aluminium rail to hold the plastic sheet on, we found this extremely difficult to install correctly. A more straightforward choice is wooden rails which are easy to install and easy to tighten.

If you are interested in meeting up to share ideas - we are also based in Wicklow (Kilcoole) and started our smallholding last year. There is a good community of growers in this area that meet occasionally at Season Park Farm in Newtownmountkennedy.

Hi there, many thanks for the great reply... even better to hear there is a local community of smallholders close by... would love to meet up and have a chat and a look around your place and share ideas and meet others subsequently too. Will drop you a private message now too so you have my direct email and number and can arrange something.

    Many thanks
