Student ID card

    A few months ago I moved to Germany to start a Masters course there. Now I’m back for a two month break before the next semester starts. Obviously the university (Hamburg) gave me a student ID with all the usual details and as I’m a student with ID I should be able to avail of student fares on buses and trains while I’m back in Ireland.

    However, the problem is that the student ID “card” is not really a card at all, but is just a piece of paper with “Student Identity Card” written on it and all my details (which match those of my passport), but it does not have a picture of me on it (but according to Irish Rail the latter isn’t a problem). But it being a piece of paper is causing issues – I got an earful from the ticket inspector yesterday about how “dodgy” the whole thing looked and that I was going to “have problems with it”.

    I think the best plan is to get a student leap card, but I think there’s going to be a problem there too since the form says I have to say what county the college is in (maybe just say Germany?). If I can get this there should be no more issues but;
    If when I’m on my way back to Dublin to get the student leapcard and have to deal with an inspector in a bad mood and decides to give me a fine what can I do about it? Or, if they don’t give me a student leap card and I get fined again every time I use the train what can I do?
    Really what I’m asking is what are my rights considering they just don’t like the look of my ID “card”?

    The crossed out info below is, from top to bottom, student number, name, date of birth, German address.
