Just watching Rare Breed on UTV Ireland....have to say imo it's miles ahead of RTE's effort,and that's coming from a Leitrim man:)
Great variety of types of farms....my only quibble would be it doesn't show many Part Time Farmers,of which there are plenty of us....with only a lock of sheep or cattle etc.

Far more farmer focussed than the airy fairy stuff that's on Ear to the Ground a lot of the time.And because of this fact will give urbanites who happen to watch it a far better idea of the amount of planning,research,etc that any successful farmer needs to do...and it's not just a question of collecting E.U, grant cheques on a yearly basis!

Rare breed. But being a farmer show it should go into more detail with machinery etc. And some of the camera angles are discracful

Agh feck forgot it was on tonight, no competition. Ear to the ground is brutal most of the time there's no real information about farming.

Rare breed wins for me.
Have not watched ETTG in a long time. Its not solely a farming programme its more about countryside. There is an opening there for rte to get a simular programme to rare breed.

Still though in rare breed they talk as if the people watching know absolutely nothing about farming. It just needs to get more serious.

Rare Breed for me as well, it's half an hour of interesting segments. I'd zone out of ETTG half the time when they talk about farming fashion or leaves or something boring.

It's probably trying to cover a broad audience, more than likely there are people who aren't farming watching it because it's between the two Corries.
It also means that beef/sheep/tillage farmers are introduced to different aspects on a basic level. I certainly don't know anything about pigs but found that bit on them very interesting to watch and learn from.
I'd love if they stuck all the different bits together to make hour long suckler/sheep etc DVD's or shows.

The only change I'd make you rare breed is maybe slow it down a bit, maybe only show 2 farms and you'd get a better chance to see the ins and outs

As Kovu said it is probably down to demographics and location.
ETTG (RTE) is targeting a population of over 4 million of which half/a third?? are urban dwellers. Where as Rare Breed is targeting a population of 1.5 million within the 6 Counties.
Also what is the spend/allowance per population between both broadcasters.

I have watched Rare Breed a few times and it is more farming focussed than ETTG.
Having said that I grew up watching real farming programmes like Landmark and Mart and Markets (Michael Dillon) on RTE.

I think they're two fairly different programmes. What about Countryfile? I prefer it than the previous two. Again it's also fairly different but I suppose within the same genre.

Countryfile is getting too airy fairy sometimes. The only thing I like to see in it is Adams farm.

If you want to see a good farming programme watch Ffeirmio on S4C...but turn on the English subtitles.

There's some good farms on rare breed. An inspiration for everyone.

Rare Breed is excellent.

ETTG is nonsense, Ella is easy on the eye but that Daragh McCullagh is an awful t1t of a man!

Ear to the ground used to be decent a few years ago. Rare breeds a good show. Farming Sunday on the country channel is a good shout also.

I would mind if they shot the ear to the ground at tom brownes in cork, I read that hes calving over 1100 cows this spring. that would be interesting more so than so lad growing trees or gorse or something.

the rear breed programme isn't long enough though which is my only quibble, something like 18 mins without ads.

Rare breed is streets ahead of ettg. But one complaint I have on rare breed is that it's very rushed this season. They have too many farms on it.

With ettg they don't do enough farm related matters. Look at the episode with the farm manager in Russia. Give it a few minutes and that's it. They could have dedicated a whole programme on that.

Can't understand people endorsing bbc's Countryfile, I think it's worse than ETTG, admittedly I rarely watch it, but any time I did I could see v little relation between it and farming.

Rare breed is 10 times better than ETG. Never miss rare breed and never watch ETG but record it in case someones say was useful. They never do and I just delete it.

Ferimeori on TG4 is interesting. Feirm Factor on TG4 was a laugh; knew lads who competed on it.

In fairness Ella is easy on the eye but seeing as that's the best thing about the show Daragh doesn't stand a chance. Ella does as much scuttering as Daragh. Is Helen still on it. she falls somewhere in the middle. not as easy on the eye as Ella but better than Daragh.
