As a sketch on Republic of Telly it worked very well but can it make the crossover to a 25min 6 episode show?

I hope so anyway as I like the characters and liked the RoT sketches.

In a way it's perfectly placed to mock current society from it's position in the past.

I'd agree the skits in ROT were fun.

I hope they keep it subtle and it isn't six episodes of "OMG do ya remember mammy and daddy used to do that when we were younger".

What? She is giving the guests TK Lemonade and pink wafers?

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Hoping this will make that difficult jump from sketch to sitcom.

I'll give it a chance anyway - first episodes of sitcoms are so hard to get right.

It will be so hard to get a full half hour show out of these characters, I will tune in and see how it goes. I think it would need supporting characters such as their neighbours/parents in it too.

It looks awful on the ads and I suspect that the ads will have shown you the "funniest" bits.

I will give it a chance. Translating short sketches into full length shows can often be problematic to say the least.

The first episode of Damo and Ivor was terrible but by the end of the series I quite liked the show.

Hopefully tonight's one will have a good start as it has a lot of potential.

I don't watch Republic of Telly so no idea about any of the other stuff, but I've just seen a preview for this on Twitter and it was painfully unfunny. Will be tuning in out of morbid curiosity for the first episode anyway but no hopes for it at all.

More of Jennifer Maguire being pushed down the publics throats cause RTE reckon she's mad funny.

And thats enough of that. Absolute scutter

Seems utterly dreadful which is a pity because I like the two of them. Trying so hard and relying on gimmicks so far.

    Doesn't work at all.

Better as a sketch and Maguire is as funny as the human centipede

    I laughed often.
But I've a feeling it has a small audience number wise. I can't see many 16 to 25 year olds getting it

I'm 23 and I enjoyed it, but yeah I would think it's target audience is people who were kids in the 80s

I'm at the tail end of that age grouping and I didn't laugh once during it! Can't say I enjoyed it at all. But saying that, I can see why people of a certain age would be a fan.

Muck. Though not as bad as MBB.

I enjoyed it, a few nice subtle jokes thrown in among the obvious ones.

Wicklow I think, well for the outdoor scenes anyway. You could see The Sugarloaf and that 2 hump little mount too in it.
The scene were they're driving out of NI is shot up in Kilmolin

Yup I liked the show too.

I liked it. Of course it was silly, but it made me laugh.Their costume department did a great job. Nearly spluttered my tea when I saw the Lopi jumper.

Never seen republic of telly, so didn't know what to expect. I laughed out loud during most of that.

Liked the "we're turning into protestants" bit.

    Overall. Good enough.

Funny enough to raise the odd smirk, but that's about it I'm afraid. They're grand as characters in a 3 minute sketch, but nowhere near funny enough to last the full length of a sitcom episode. And I completely failed to see why it was necessary to have the priest so camp. It really added nothing to the show. Won't be bothering with it next week.

I watched a clip of the bit on the late late, God it was cringeworthy. I thought I'll give it a chance. They are just too unfunny.

Laughed out loud at this as well. There were a fair few visual jokes thrown in such as one of the women packing the condoms together through a safety pin!

If you are under 25, you are not going to get a lot of the references. For those that grew up in the 80's, including me, I found it very funny. The turning into Protestants was also very funny.

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,365 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

I grew up in the 80s and got all the references, but I still didn't find it funny, so I don't think it can be generalised as a generational thing.

As RTE goes comedy wise this was better than I expected and at least a decent attempt. Some things worked some didn't but I'll definitely give it another go next week.

Honestly wasn't going to watch it because the ads made it look like absolute muck but it happened to come on in the background while me and the missus were chatting away about something. Pleasantly surprised by it. Some of the gags fell flat on their faces and were cringy but the better jokes helped to balance it out. I enjoyed it.

Good 3 minute sketch not 26 minute sitcom

every rural county in 80's ireland, its just a send up of the mindset of the time

hasn't Moone Boy already done the whole rural 80s nostalgia thing fairly comprehensively?

It's like marmite really. If you just want 30 mins to sit down and switch your brain off it's a good laugh better than umpteen channels offering car crash TV at that hour of the night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭secondrowgal

I would agree with those that haven't watched ROT, like me, I didn't know what to expect and quite liked most of it. I liked the sorting through the condoms at the table like drugs, and the bus of auld wans come to load up (finar, finar!). I'd give it another go. Not sure if it will get old fast, and it's not as subtle as Moone Boy, but we are always dissing our own anyway!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,478 ✭✭✭eeguy

    I liked it.

Especially the "sure we've 6 to 8 kids already!"

    And the camp gay priest...

    And "choppy changey"

Couldn't watch it last night so got around to watching it today. I actually thought it was pretty decent. Especially the first half which definitely had a good few laughs in it. Dragged slightly in the second half alright but overall I enjoyed it. Whether it works over 6 episodes is another thing.

Yeah but even that gag was trying too hard. If he said "sure we've 7 or 8 kids already" it's more subtle and funnier as you could just about believe someone saying that but no one would ever have said "we've 6 to 8 kids"

Overall I thought it had a few funny moments. Won't write it off yet.
