Well, the event is now sold out. Looking forward to it this year, first time doing it. I believe 4,000 registered cyclists. Signed up to the 140km. Anyone else participating?

Does the jersey change each year?

Same jersey as last year. Not sure what the plans are for next year. I gather it's cheaper to keep it to a plain unpopular coloured jersey.

In fairness the Jersey blends in very well with the signs on the route.
This is a very well run event and both routes are great. It's a very good day out.

Registered for the 110 km. my first time on this cycle.

Bringing my daughter who just bought a new bike. Looking forward to spending weekends together getting ready for it... Good father and daughter bonding time!!

And only heard good things about this ride.....

Yep, I know someone who couldnt attend last year and passed on their entry. Double check with the organisers just to be sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,127 ✭✭✭✭kerry4sam

If anyone knows of an entry going, you might send me a pm please. I knew that I wouldn't be around for the Cycle so didn't enter myself but someone I know is just looking for one entry if one is available by someone.
^ They have added their name onto the 'WaitList' though.

    Many Thanks,

There's a waitlist? Asked on their FB page and was told there wasn't. :(

Signed up for the waiting list, but let me know if anyone can't make it and has a free spot.
I'm late applying but early with the cancellation request

Everything is cheaper than the RoK 😉. This is a terrific day out, great buzz, well organized plenty of grub almost too much. And as anyone who knows this area will testify spectacular scenery.

I'm also on the waiting list for this.

Is there any issue with going along and cycling it on the day if you're not registered? Obviously you wouldn't have access to rests stations, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,359 ✭✭✭jon1981

Looking forward to this now! It will be epic if the weather stays good! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it looks like there are 2k on the waiting list :(

ROK can feck off with itself :D

at the end of the day, you'd be another road user on public roads. whatever about the ethical and practical (insurance etc.) dimensions to it ...

That's what I figured, that you'd be as entitled to cycle those roads as anyone else.

For those of you that didn't get a spot on this cycle - there is another cycle on the Beara Peninsula on 16th July - spectacular route with stunning views - it's the Beara Charity Cycle - all welcome! Sorry can't post link but there is a website and also a Facebook page.

Does anyone know someone heading down from limerick doing this.

We only have room for 3 bikes and need 1 bike brought up and down??

Doing the cycle from Kenmare next week. Do riders set off as a group at official start time (8.30) or is it like Ring of Kerry when most head off earlier?

From the ROB website. "If you wish to leave earlier you may do so, but you may not have the support of stewards, mechanical or medical cover on the route."
Doubt many will be leaving earlier, people mostly leave early on the ROK to avoid crowds but with 3 start locations for Ring of Beara it shouldn't be an issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,952 ✭✭✭funnights74

Just saw the weekly forecast on RTE and it's looking good right through next weekend. High pressure dominating with light winds. So dry but cool:) that'll do nicely.

    Unfortunately not!
A part of the route is going to be checked- as in the ROK, riders will be checked for their Reg, which they will have to be displayed, i.e. bike no, helmet no and wrist band.
Anybody on the route without Reg on that day,WILL be made do the 'cycle of shame'
Stewards and Gardai, on duty for that specific purpose.

I'm surprised at that, are you sure this is the case?
Whatever about Gardai, I would have thought that stewards would be breaking the law if they tried to prevent someone's right of passage on a public road.

The event's website states that there are no road closures for the event.
It would be fairly strange and ironic if cyclicts were prevented from travelling the route, while motorists were allowed to.

    Check again!
Road closed (1) in Kenmare, and (2) at Killmacillogue!
See local press or contact Ring of Beara website

I'd expect there to be a road closed in the town, for the finish line, etc.
Probably a short alternate route around it.
Do you have a link to that?

From there FAQ, it states that "There are no road closures for this event."
If there are closures they should make their FAQ more accurate.

    Kenmare.ie has details of road closures around the town(from 1 a.m.on Friday,to 8 pm,on Sat)
Can't find details,on line, regarding the Lauragh closure, but 'twas in the local newspaper(Kerry's Eye)last week!

I was down this way on holidays last week and cycled a circuit of the peninsula - 82km or so going across the Healy Pass. It's really spectacular down there and it looks like the weather is shaping up nicely for it. Keep an eye out for the Skelligs a few Km outside Allihies...if you can take your eyes off the rest of the scenery.

Have a great day at it!

    quick question re registration:

I am doing the cycle with a group of about 10 of us all starting from Kenmare bar one person who only managed to register from Castletownbere. We tried to swap his start point to Kenmare by putting his name on the waitlist but no joy. Do you reckon we will have any grief travelling from Kenmare to Castletownbere ? He will have his entry stuff printed off and his text msg, he's technically registered to cycle he'll just be "illegal" from Kenmare to CTB. The site says that registration in CTB is open from 7-8am...we will hardly be there by then...so then what? any ideas?

Have ye tried calling Elite Events to see can they accommodate a swap?

HI, yea I contacted them two months ago and then again about two weeks ago and they said no. :( i asked the lady that i spoke to if he'd have problems or would be pulled off the bike in some dramatic fashion..and she reluctantly said no it was unlikely yet she seemed like she was being careful enough not to say that it'd be all cool either. It's my friends first cycling event and i'd rather it went smoothly for his benefit (and mine too i suppose!)

Chance it I'd say. Can't see someone being pulled when they're fully paid up. Get him to sign on the night before or early that morning and then hightail it back to Kenmare to start with ye. When someone has a legit bike tag I doubt they'll pay much heed to the start point on the tag.

Fully paid up BUT agreed to start from Ctbare, if people take that attitude it could finish the event. When you signed up to start from Ctbare or for that matter Allihies, your finishing point is ALSO Ctbare, I.e.thats where your medal, food voucher, and whatever else is. Therefore the genuine Kenmare starters, may not have enough to cover all and Ctbare would be left with a surplus. It's VERY IMPORTANT that people start from their allocated town,
The reason for it is to string the riders out along the ring Statically it would be impossible for that many cyclists to leave Kenmare at the same time.

Hope everyone enjoyed that. It was tough(for me anyway)

Found the last climb not too bad, was dreading it after the ones that came before it. There was no let up in the climbing.

A terrific day in the Beara peninsula, arrived in Kenmare at 7 and after a munch and registration we headed off about 8, there were already plenty of groups on the road.
The route was slightly altered from last year but by heading through Toussist even more breathtaking scenery was added. Great banter as we travelled around the loop. The final climb up caha was tough but once you go through the tunnels there is a great sense of achievement having completed the challenge.
A big shout out to everyone involved in putting today's event together, nothing was too much trouble from stewards, to the foodstop staff. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Here's to next year!

Great day.... Plus FREE sun tan!!

Did anyone try the "Pork, onion & Tomato " Sandwiches.....is that a Castletownbere delicacy??? I stuck to Tuna.... yum after 50 odd kms!

Great day had doing the 140K.

Everything was perfect including the weather. That climb out of Glengarriff was a killer, never as happy to see that tunnel.

    Lovely finishers medal too.

Probably the best sportive I've done in Ireland. Absolutely tremendous event, well run, serious buzz at each stop, fantastic scenery, weather was amazing, no major queues and very safe. Will do it again for sure. ROK has nothing on this even imo.

To those of you who did both the 15,and 16, Ring of Beara!

Which would you consider the best one, taking into account, the route, number of participants, starting and finishing line, and the atmosphere around the various locations etc...?

I thought the 2016 was better. The food stops were better organised, had a greater choice and nicer sambos.

The slight change of route worked well too.

Oh, and the weather was much better.

We took our time going round, didn't get back to kenmare until 6pm,

There was no sandwiches in alihies when we got there, we didn't stop in Castletownbere, and when we got to Glengarriff they had already packed up everything. There were plenty people on the road behind us.
