GIMX - Using Older Logitech Wheels G27/G25/DFGT etc. on PS4 and XBox One

So I decided to create a dedicated thread for GIMX, which is a hack that allows you to simulate a Logitech G29 / G920 Steering Wheel on your PS4 or XBox One, so that you can use older unsupported Logitech wheels such as the Logitech G27, G25, Driving Force GT etc...

It also supports Force Feedback VIA USB ONLY, so behaves just like a G29 wheel.

    GIMX in action:

For the PS4 you have two options:
    Use the DIY USB Adapter
Use Bluetooth Adapter (Over Linux only, FFB is noy supported as it only emulates a Dualshock 4)

The Xbox One only works with the DIY USB Adapter.

The Hardware Requirements are on the GIMX Wiki.

Thanks to TireeTerror for introducing me and thurlesdrunk for the tips.

All updates will be posted in this thread.

So I decided to share my Raspbian Image on the gimx forum, for use with a Logitech G27 on the PS4 via DIY USB Adapter.

    http://gimx.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1435

Direct link to the zipped image file:

    https://mega.nz/#!mR0ygBBa!BGCtEYUXFZcWduz9crtCpiXU_oMz8_wsNgdvwUM3Sl8

In the future i plan to create an image file for using the G27 over bluetooth.

I shall also look into creating a command line setup using Raspbian Lite to fit a 2gb SD card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,301 ✭✭✭Doge

So bluetooth seems to be out as Matlo said it does not support FFB, as it only emulates the Dualshock 4.

Looks like the USB adapter is the only way to go.

Thanks for this. I must give it a try. I'm using a DFGT so I will have to change to that config instead of the G27.
Have you noticed any performance issues compared to running on a laptop instead of a Pi?
I'm a total noob with raspberry pi's and linux so it will be a learning experience. Any recommendations where's a good place to pick up a pi cheap etc.?
    Cheers

Can I use the program above to use a g29 on Xbox one or is there a simpler approach to use for that?

Hey i have the hardware for the diy adapter but i am having issues with the software, can anyone try talk a complete novice on programming the teensey and running GIMX.
Gimx for dummies seems to be too advanced for me. I really want to get this working for Dirt Rally on Tuesday

Which part are you having trouble with? Are you using a raspberry pi or laptop? Windows or Ubuntu?

Laptop on Windows, I can't get the gimx launcher to run, it's runs for a split second and then stops

    Haven't seen that problem before.....windows 7?
When you say it stops do you mean the whole program closes a second or 2 after you open it?
I had timeout issues running it with windows 7, side loaded Ubuntu and it works perfectly for me with that.
Does the gimx config editor do the same when you try open it?

Okay, so gimx is running but you getting an error. Have you got your ps4 controller connected to your laptop aswell? And did you press the PS button on the controller before you run gimx?

No I didn't have the controller connected to the laptop, I'm just after doing it, do I need to have the g25, the controller and the adapter all plugged into the laptop at the aame time as I only have 2 USB ports

Yep, all 3 (DIY dongle, wheel and ps4 controller) need to be connected to the laptop for it to work so you will need to get a cheap USB hub if your laptop only has 2 ports.

Thanks so much for the help I will be so happy if this works.
    Would this hub be suitable?

No worries, its a bit of messing to get sorted out but once it is set up and working its easy to use/start and works perfectly.
I would recommend an externally powered hub, something like this one.
    http://www.currys.ie/Product/advent-hb212-4port-usb-20-hub/315240/400.4.4
People have had problems with some of the non external powered hubs like the one you linked.

I've updated the Raspbian Image and with the latest version of GIMX 5.7,
and fixed an issue with the cursor moving and increased the resolution for VNC.

    http://gimx.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1435

Have you noticed any performance issues compared to running on a laptop instead of a Pi?

    Cheers

Not sure how I missed your question months ago!
I never managed to get GIMX to run on my PC, the GIMX Launcher wouldn't detect the G27 properly.
The only issue I seem to have is that it stops working exactly after 7-8mins with my Raspberry Pi while playing project cars.

However that user cortega1 on the gimx forums said he was able to use it much longer than 8 mins so it seems to just be something wrong with my hardware setup and not the image itself.

If you ever give it a go on the Pi let me know how it goes.

I recently bought a G29 so probably won't bother using GIMX anymore.

Thanks for that. Any recommendations on where is a good place to pick a pi up from? Are you using a pi1 or pi2? Or if you decide to not use yours anymore and decide to sell it give me a shout.
I was tempted to pick up a G29 before xmas when they were 229 euro at currys, back up to over 400 now :-( Should have probably bitten the bullet then. Did you get a decent deal on your G29? You find much difference to the G27? Cheers

RS, Element14 (Farnell) and Pimironi are the main ones.
Any Pi with 4 USBs would do the trick nicely.

In case you havent seen this page, it shows each model clearly:
    https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/

Im using the Pi 1 Model B which only has 2 USB ports so I'm forced to use a USB hub with it which is messier, i could sell you mine easily but I'd recommend you get a 4 port one, i have a ****ty paper craft case printed from an a4 page which I use as a case. :p

Pimoroni's PiBow case is a nice one actually.

Btw i managed to fix the disconnecting issue I had tonight:
    http://gimx.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1435&p=9069#p9069

Havent used the G29 extensively yet as Im trying to finish up with GIMX so the community can benefit, but the thing that stands out the most is the new brake.
It is much much stiffer than the old one, and there is only about an inch and half of travel.

I'm not sure if I'll like the shorter travel of the brake, it will take some getting used to, but you can remove a plastic piece inside that will possibly increase the travel:

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6WYeuQigcPw

I managed to get the G29 for £100 from currys.co.uk , there was a late night deal that went live at about 2:20 a.m. last week which was posted on hotukdeals.
There was a 15% off code also, so I got the G29 and shifter for £135. :)

Right so after using the G29 properly there is definitely a few issues with the new software which is totally different to the old Logitech Profiler.

Since release none of the following options existed either for a default profile or game profile...

    rotax_steering_0-png.64356

...up until a few days ago, when they released a beta version of the software which adds:

    Combined Pedals
    Degrees of Rotation
    Centering Spring Enable / Disable
    Centering Spring Strength

The 3 Force Feedback sliders are still non existent.

Also the Clutch shares its axis with the Wheel.

The wheel uses the full X axis, but the clutch only uses the positive half of the Y Axis.

This means you have to set a 50% deadzone in PC games just to be able to use the damn thing properly!

Also you can't launch games from the software even though it detects games and sets up profiles for them!

This a good 6 months after the wheel is launched and the software is still unfinished!

As if Logitech didn't lose enough respect already...

Thanks for the advice/help. Gonna order the pi 1 model B with the 4 usb ports to eliminate any need for a hub like you suggest.

Good find on the G29 at that price! I will have to stick to my DFGT a little while longer or until there is another sale :-)

My next project will probably be this DIY Hydraulic Handbrake:

    http://www.isrtv.com/forums/topic/10762-dsd-hydraulic-handbrake-diy-project/

Using cheaper parts especially the slave cylinder, I should be able to do it for under 100 euro.

I nice step by step guide would be handy though as its going to take some figuring out.

So I decided I will use my little Leonardo Microcontroller left over from the GIMX project with that DIY Hydraulic Handbrake,
and after a day of editing values in source code (I'm no coder!), I have a Potentiometer working as an analog axis in game controller properties!

The Resolution is 10-bit also which is nice! The Logitech G25/G27/G29 wheel only aloow the pedals have 8-bit resolution!

So I decided I'm going to hook the pedals up to the Leonardo as well as the handbrake, for increased resolution.

We're talking 1024 values instead of 255, thats a nice upgrade!

I have the pedals working but theres quite a deadzone and the axis are inverted, so I'm waiting on a reply from a user called RemjetX, who has fixed that issue already:

    http://forum.freetronics.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=734&p=15573#p15573

I think it's cool where this project is taking me!

In the excitement of getting the electronics working I went ahead and ordered 95% of the parts, the cost for the handbrake will be just under 100 euro, even cheaper than that Fanatec one!

The handbrake looks the business. I saw some of the guys on GTPlanet modding their G27 shifters to use as a handbrake, but does'nt come close to what you are building. Might have to give it a try myself, would definitely come in handy with Dirt Rally :-)

So after successfully using the Gimx adaptor for a few months thanks to the excellent advise on here I now have an issue which has graduated from intermittent to very consistent, after about 10 mins of use the G25 will stop responding ie. freeze at whatever position it was at. The screen does not change or show any faults but the only way to get it working again is to either plug out the adaptor of sometimes restart the laptop.
Any idea's? The laptop is running windows 10, I have heard this can cause issues, would ubuntu solve this issue?

Is the power saving feature of the Dual Shock 4 disabled in the PS4 Settings?

Thats all i can think of, you'd be better off creating a thread on the Gimx forums as im done with the project after buying a G29.

    Hi There,

Has anyone tried to use a teensy or a TAIO GIMX board for running a logitech g27 on a PS4 (or similar setup) as per this article? (GIMX USB DIY Adapter)
    http://gimx.fr/wiki/index.php?title=DIY_USB_adapter_for_dummies

I'm looking to source either a teensy like this from somewhere that ships to ireland

https://www.pjrc.com/store/teensy_pins.html (note, it's the one with the PINs connected)

or a TIAO Gboard like this
    http://www.diygadget.com/development-boards/tiao-gimx-gboard-game-input-multiplexer-matrix-usb-serial-and-atmega32u4-development-board.html

..so that i can use the G27 on the PS4 without a laptop.

    any help appreciated

I used a teensy and UART from aliexpress, worked fine. Long delivery time though. And the teensy I got I had to solder the pins on.

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Teensy-2-0-USB-Keyboard-Mouse-AVR-for-arduino-ISP-Board-Mega32u4-U-Disk-Experiment-usb/32363184858.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.p4y6mI

This is the first time have seen the TAIO GIMX board. Looks like a nice solution instead of the 2 separate boards I used.
I was using it to connect a DFGT to the PS4. Worked perfectly using a laptop with Ubuntu loaded onto it. Also used a raspberry pi B+ but found the ffb 'locks' for a second sometimes, maybe a pi 3 might solve that. Or I was just unlucky.
In the end I bought a TM T150 on sale. Having to connect up and start the GIMX became a pain. But it does work great in fairness.
