Need help finding a decent receiver/Sky Replacement solution

    Hi guys,

So me and my family have been Sky free for 7 months now and we do love the idea of Saorview, it has all the channels we need and honestly it's mostly just for my parents to watch as I thrive on Netflix. Only problem is, our first Saorview box, the Triax TSC114 satellite-terrestrial combi has been an absolute disaster for us. We had ourselves convinced it was the way we were using it but 7 months later, it clearly is just a heap of junk and now I have learned it is no longer being manufactured (figures!). I won't go into depth on why it's such a bad box but basically crashes, slowness, unresponsive, completely unreliable recording amongst many other unexplained bugs lead me to wonder how it even was let out of the factory and somehow "approved" by Saorview. Is there anything that even roughly resembles the quality of a Sky+ box out there? But I digress...

I'm here to hopefully get help on finding a proper, reliable, TV solution as Googling the multitude of boxes available leaves me even more confused! I'm very tech savvy as a Computer Science student so a complicated setup is not a problem, the day to day use needs to be very simple though for my parents to use.

As I mentioned, we currently have a Satellite/Terrestrial combo box that receives all the Saorview channels, plus the BBCs and Channel 4, UTV, ITV etc, with the facility to record, pause, rewind with an external hard drive. That's all we want.
I have heard there are full Satellite solutions for this without the need for a terrestrial antenna. There's also Android boxes available for streaming TV which could also be an option as I have recently upgraded to Fibre Broadband. Android boxes might be a bit more stable, with an easy interface, but as of yet I cannot find any with a recording function, with all the channels we want. Also is AerTV any good?

I realise I may be looking for something that may simply not exist, if nothing else maybe somebody may be able to recommend something similar to the Triax TSC114 that actually WORKS reliably and stably.

Any help would be appreciated because it seems to be a minefield out there and after spending over €100 on this box, I don't want to take that risk again and finding another receiver that is simply not fit for purpose.

    Thanks in advance,
    Dan.

Looks like there's a Saorview/Freesat connected receiver on the way and being developed by Freesat. No details yet but it could be a user friendly one box option for your parents when it arrives. Netflix connectivity may be an option on this receiver. Thread on it here. Sunday Times article on it -

Until then you could go the separate Saorview Freesat receiver route (2 separate receivers and remote controls). Is their TV Saorview compatible?

There are other combi receivers on the market but I'm not sure how user friendly they would be for your family setup - http://www.freetv.ie/saorview/boxes/combos.html, http://www.satworld.ie/saorview/combo-receivers/

That sounds perfect actually! thanks for the image too. I wouldn't hold my breath for this though, most likely it'll be 2017 before this becomes a reality but yeah, I have looked at those two sites before and actually bought our current Triax box from FreeTV.ie, but I'm just wary of the quality of the rest of them now based on our bad experience with the Triax.

The TV isn't Saorview compatible but it does tune into all the channels. It's an old Samsung 40 incher, no USB port for recording, only one coaxial input unfortunately.

For user friendliness a Freesat receiver is the way to go - http://www.freetv.ie/satellite/receivers/freesat.html. Twin tuner recorders, 7 day guide, series link etc.

At the moment there is only 1 Saorview twin tuner recorder - http://www.freetv.ie/saorview/boxes/saorview-boxes.html. Series linking, 7 day guide etc.

See this post for a recent Irish Times article on imminent Saorview developments
